We had an amazing time during our full one day trip, touring various sites and shrines between Tokyo and Hakone while enjoying the views of majestic Mount Fuji . Our guide and driver, Ryu, was extremely knowledgeable about the sites and the Japanese culture - we learned so much. Ryu was very respectful and spoke perfect English. We highly recommend this or any tour with him!

They don’t tell you you have to have a lot of cash on hand for the different parts of the tour that only take cash. Be sure to bring plenty. My guide told us nothing about what we were seeing so I didn’t feel like I even had a tour after spending all that money on it. The only positive thing was that he was a good driver.

Japan is still largely a cash-based society in 2026, particularly in rural areas, smaller shops, and at temples or shrines, although digital payments have become widespread in major cities. While cards and mobile payments are accepted at convenience stores and restaurants, carrying cash—especially small denominations—is an essential responsibility for any traveler navigating daily transactions in a foreign country. Additionally, we must note that your itinerary was scheduled to conclude at Odawara Station. However, midway through the tour, the decision was made to return by car instead of using the planned drop-off point, despite the extra fees associated with this change in service not being covered. We take all feedback seriously and will continue to work on making our service information as clear as possible for our guests.

It really was a very good tour. Our tour guide made several very good recommendations such as leaving earlier than the scheduled pickup time to beat the traffic and crowds at the stops. The shrines and lakes were beautiful and the tour was full of history. Although Mt Fuji was almost completely covered, the tour guide and the speedboat captain shared some of their personal amazing pictures of it. The only “issues” we had were the tour guide was very quiet and it was not clear that we were responsible for buying the return bullet train tickets(they’re $20 a piece so not a huge deal). Neither of these made the trip any less amazing!

Ryu is very knowledgeable of Japan and the history of the country. He confirmed our pick up time the day prior to our tour and was punctual on the day of the tour. The vehicle was clean and quite accommodating. Ryu explained every stop in detail and offered suggestions to make our day even more memorable and enjoyable. I found this tour on TripAdvisor and I was interested in a private experience and chose this tour based on previous reviews. My partner and I were picked up at our hotel by Ryu bright and early to beat traffic heading out of Tokyo. The car ride was very comfortable, and the experience was spectacular. We visited several locations, including the Chureito Pagoda, Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen Jinja Shrine, and Oshino Hakkai. The village was stunning and Ryu introduced to local vendors. We also visited the 5th station on Mt. Fuji. Ryu was warm and welcoming, and provided so much information about each site we visited. He took so many lovely photos of us as well, which was greatly appreciated. We ended our trip taking the bullet train back to Tokyo which was a wonderful. I would 100% recommend this tour, and my partner and I would gladly book with Xplor Japan again and if we were able to see Ryu again that would be wonderful! Thank you for everything.

If you do this tour, you have to have Ryu! He is professional, funny, accommodating and 100% knowledgeable about all things Japan. Our group didn’t necessarily have a plan when Ryu picked us up from our hotel but that did not matter as Ryu gave us a ton of options for the day. We were so impressed with his knowledge of the area we toured and he introduced us to new sites and a lot of fantastic ice cream! We booked this trip the day before so we were so happy we were actually able to see outside of Tokyo on a day off from our work trip. The bullet train was a fairly short ride, but well worth the experience. If you have the chance to book this specific trip, do it and try to request Ryu!
