Three self-guided audio tours starting steps from the cruise dock: the downtown Juneau walking tour plus the Mount Roberts and Perseverance Trail hikes — 47 GPS story stops. One purchase plays from one phone as you explore together. Written by a born-and-raised Southeast Alaskan; GPS triggers each story hands-free, fully offline. Just so it's clear: this is not a live human guide and not a paper ticket — it's a self-guided audio experience written by someone who actually walks these trails. You'll hear how Gold Creek built a capital city, stand at the Glory Hole, meet Patsy Ann at the waterfront, climb past Father Brown's Cross, and stop by the Red Dog Saloon and St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church — stories no placard will hand you. No date, no time limit, no expiry — and no signal needed on the trails. Setup takes about 2 minutes — full steps are on your Viator ticket and in your confirmation email (check spam). In the app, your pass appears as "Downtown Juneau Explorer."

Downtown Juneau Walking Tour - 14 GPS stops through the waterfront and old town — how a gold strike built a capital no road can reach, the Red Dog Saloon's real history, and Patsy Ann, the bull terrier who met every steamship at the dock.
A wooden Russian Orthodox church an Indigenous community paid for themselves in 1894 — and the reason why isn't the one you'd assume. GPS-triggered audio plays as you reach it, telling the real story. Viewed from the street as part of the self-guided downtown tour; any interior visit is separate.
A stop on the downtown walking tour. GPS-triggered audio plays as you arrive, covering Juneau's improbable status as a capital no road can reach and the repeated failed attempts to move the government. Viewed from the public street, hands-free.
The hike locals actually do, climbing through rainforest above downtown Juneau. As you ascend, GPS-triggered audio shares the trail's gold-rush history, its rare ecosystem, and the priest who built the path. The tramway ride down is a separate paid ticket, not included in this audio tour.
A Juneau institution and a stop on the downtown walking tour. As you reach it, GPS-triggered audio plays the saloon's colorful history and the tale of the Wyatt Earp revolver that can't quite be Wyatt Earp's revolver. Listen on the street, hands-free — entry and any purchases inside are your own.
8.5 miles into Gold Creek valley on the miners' historic route — 20 stories cover the Glory Hole, the mine ruins, and the grueling climb miners made before every shift.

Really enjoyed the history of each location!
I'm glad to hear that you were able experience some of the unique history in Juneau! Hope to have you back sometime in the near future.
We were on a one day port visit with no plans other than walk around a bit. This was perfect for giving us the history and background of the things we were seeing. It started raining heavily so we only did half of the downtown tour. We would have loved doing the rest of the downtown plus the Mt. Robert’s and Perseverance Trail had there been more time and better weather. My only concern is the starting point was slightly confusing but we figured it out by tapping on the location markers. A side benefit was going into the State Capitol and picking up a self guided tour of that. Something this tour recommended.
The weather is the one thing we wish that could be controlled around here! Thank you for the review and I will see if I can help make the starting point a little more obvious on the map for future users. You can manually access all of the tour points at any time and even have them play one after another if you would like to hear the rest of the tours when you are back home. Come back to Alaska when you get the chance, we love having wonderful visitors explore the area!
