Sazan is the largest island in Albania and was, until 2015, entirely closed — a Soviet-era naval base of tunnels, gun emplacements and a ghost village that visitors can now walk through. Behind it the Karaburun peninsula runs for twenty-five kilometres of uninhabited cliff, and the two together make up the Karaburun-Sazan marine park, the only one in the country.

Can you visit Sazan island?
Yes — the island opened to visitors in 2015 after decades as a closed military base, and boat trips from Vlore land there as part of the standard half-day itinerary. The tunnels, bunkers and abandoned barracks are the reason to go; there is nothing else on it.
What is the Karaburun peninsula?
A twenty-five-kilometre spine of limestone cliff on the far side of the Bay of Vlore, uninhabited and without roads, protected since 2010 as Albania's only marine national park. Its caves, ancient quarry and beaches are reachable by boat and no other way.
How long does it take to reach Sazan from Vlore?
About twenty to thirty minutes by speedboat from the Vlore marina, depending on the sea. Most trips combine the island with the Haxhi Ali cave and a beach stop on the Karaburun side, which fills a half day.
