The rail pass is no longer an automatic win
After the 2023 price rise the nationwide JR Pass only pays off on quite specific itineraries. For a Tokyo–Kyoto return with local travel it frequently loses. Price your actual route as individual tickets first — it takes ten minutes and often saves more than a day tour costs.
Three weeks a year Japan travels within itself
Golden Week at the end of April into early May, Obon in mid-August, and the New Year period. Trains, hotels and tours sell out nationwide and prices rise. These are not weeks to discover on arrival.
Reservations are not optional here
Small restaurants, tea ceremonies, sumo, teamLab and the better guided experiences run on advance booking, and walking in is often simply not possible. Japan is the country where planning ahead is the difference between doing a thing and seeing a photograph of it.
Cherry blossom cannot be booked
The front moves north over several weeks and the forecast only firms up a fortnight ahead. If the trip is built around it, book flexible accommodation and be ready to follow it. Autumn colour moves the other way, from north to south, and is almost as spectacular with half the competition.
Kyoto is a bus city, not a metro city
Its temples are spread across the edges of a wide valley and the subway barely touches them. Days there are buses, taxis or a guided car, and that is the main reason a guided Kyoto day earns its price in a country where you can otherwise manage alone.
Cash has not gone away
Cards work across city retail and not at shrines, small restaurants or rural bus fares. Convenience-store machines are the reliable way to draw yen, and they take foreign cards when bank machines sometimes will not.

Japan: common questions
How many days do you need in Japan?
Ten days for Tokyo, Kyoto and one more stop — Osaka, Hakone or Hiroshima — with the shinkansen between them. A week is Tokyo and Kyoto and no slack. Two weeks lets you add the Japanese Alps or Hokkaido without rushing.
Is the Japan Rail Pass worth it?
Less often than it used to be. Since the 2023 price rise it pays off on itineraries with several long hops — Tokyo, Kyoto, Hiroshima and back, or a full-country loop — and loses on a simple Tokyo–Kyoto return. Add up your actual journeys as single tickets before buying.
What does a tour in Japan cost?
From our index of 50 cities: a median of €83 in Tokyo and €71 in Kyoto, against a global median of €60. Both sit above the world average, and the Kyoto figure is the more useful one — much of what sells there is a full guided day, because that is what the city actually needs.
When is the best time to visit?
Late March to April for blossom and late October to November for autumn colour, and both are busy for exactly that reason. May and early June are the underrated choice: warm, green, and without either crowd. Avoid Golden Week, Obon and the New Year.
Do tours run in English?
In Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka and Hiroshima, routinely, and the quality is high. Outside them the choice narrows quickly. Japan is also the country where a private guide changes the trip the most, because so much of what you are looking at is unlabelled in any language you read.
Tokyo or Kyoto first?
Tokyo first if you fly into Haneda or Narita, which most people do — it absorbs jet lag better, because a wrong-time-of-day wander there is still interesting. Kyoto rewards being alert and rewards early mornings, so it is better placed second.
