Reykjavik’s median tour is €127 against a global median of €60 — behind only Amman among the fifty cities we measured. The figure reflects what is sold here: glacier hikes, super-jeep days and ten-hour coach routes, not two-hour city walks.
Weather closes roads, not just views
Winter storms shut whole sections of the ring road at a few hours’ notice, and the highland F-roads only open around late June and close again in September. Check road.is and safetravel.is the morning of any drive — this is normal practice here, not caution.
The aurora is a season, not a booking
Visible from roughly September to April, on clear dark nights, and never guaranteed. Reputable operators let you rejoin a later night free if the tour sees nothing, which is the thing to check before you book rather than after.
The two big day trips go opposite directions
The Golden Circle loops inland — Þingvellir, Geysir, Gullfoss — and takes about eight hours. The South Coast runs to Vik past the waterfalls and the black beach and takes ten. Trying to do both in one day is sold and is not worth it.
The lagoons are pre-booked only
The Blue Lagoon has no walk-in entry and sells out in summer; Sky Lagoon in Reykjavik and the Secret Lagoon inland are cheaper and easier. A towel is included at the big ones and rented at the small ones.
Daylight swings from four hours to twenty-four
Late June barely gets dark; late December gives around four usable hours of light, which compresses every day trip. Winter itineraries are shorter for a reason and departure times move with the sunrise.

How many days do you need in Iceland?
Four days from Reykjavik covers the Golden Circle, the South Coast and a lagoon. A week gets you round the ring road in summer, or up to Akureyri and the north. In winter, plan fewer places and more spare time — weather will move something.
What does a tour in Iceland cost?
Reykjavik’s median is €127 in our index of 50 cities, more than double the global median of €60 and the second-highest figure in the study. Full-day coach routes to the South Coast are the mid-range; glacier and super-jeep days sit well above it.
When can you see the northern lights?
From about September to April, on a clear dark night, with enough solar activity. Nothing is visible between May and August because it never gets dark. Book early in your trip so you have other nights to fall back on.
Do you need to rent a car?
Not for the standard day trips, which all run as coaches from Reykjavik and are often cheaper than fuel plus insurance. A car pays for itself if you are circling the island in summer. In winter, unless you are confident on ice, take the coach.
When is the best time to visit?
June to August for daylight, roads and the highlands; September and March for aurora with tolerable weather; December and January for the shortest days and the biggest atmosphere, at the cost of only a few hours of light.
