We had a semi-private tour which was 9 people in total and really enjoyed the experience. Our guide Eddy was very knowledgeable and engaging and our children (12,14) listened well and liked the way he led us through the 3 hour tour. It was exactly the right amount of information and right pace and we felt the tour was totally worth it.
Everything was well organized. Our guide told us with extreme sympathy about the beauty of precious rooms and corridors. I highly recommend it
This is a tale of 2 reviews. The Vatican Museum is way overcrowded. Shoulder to shoulder, had elbows and forearms in my back for the bulk of this part of the tour. Being claustrophobic, I almost had to drop out at a couple points because it was so packed with people. What made me hang in there was the best part of the tour, our guide, Federico (Fred). Unbelievable wealth of information, engaging, personable. Pointed out some of his favorite pieces in the museum and explained why he liked them and the significance of the piece. Described the symbolism of the pieces, giving commentary on the nuances. I appreciate art, but Federico got me to see past what I was seeing. Where I would typically see something and say, "oh, that's cool", now I see a piece and say, "dang, look at THAT detail". When we got to The Sistine Chapel, I was expecting it to be quiet, because there are signs galore that say it's a place of worship so talking is probhibited. It was anything but silent in there. So many people carrying on conversations. It was pretty noisy. Also, photos are not allowed, yet there were several people discreetly taking photos. One woman, not in our group, wasn't even trying to be discreet. Pulls out a camera right in front of us and starts snapping away. Federico politely told her that it wasn't allowed and she explains that nobody told her. She pleads with Federico to let her take pictures because, "I didn't know I couldn't". I was expecting to be moved to tears seeing Michelangelo's work, especially The Creation of Man, because it's so iconic, but I wasn't. Instead, I was more struck by the audacity of people and the entitelment they think they have. I know, that's a me problem. Our group broke off after The Sistine Chapel, so my wife and I got a private tour of St. Peter's Basilica with Federico. Magnificent place. Not overcrowded, plenty of space to move, to take photos and get detailed information from Federico without having to hurry for people behind us. We saw The Tombs of the Popes, JP2's tomb, the original Pieta, got to see a mass being celebrated, got some rosaries that we bought for our family blessed by a Vatican Priest. We also stood on the spot where the place the casket when Popes lie in State after they die. This was a perfect way to cap off the tour.
Yulia was funny and amazing, we had a good time and very useful info from her.
