Itinerary

40 min

Explore Kruja Castle, the hilltop fortress that became the stronghold of Albania’s national hero, Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg, during the 15th-century resistance against the Ottoman Empire. Walk through its stone gates and imagine the battles that once took place here while enjoying panoramic views of the Adriatic plain and surrounding mountains. Inside the walls, travelers can visit the Skanderbeg Museum (optional), which displays weapons, maps, and artifacts from the period, and the nearby Ethnographic Museum, housed in a beautifully preserved traditional home. The castle grounds also feature cafés and viewing terraces — ideal for relaxing and taking memorable photos of this historic site.

Step inside the Ethnographic Museum of Kruja, housed in a beautifully preserved 18th-century traditional home that once belonged to a prominent local family. The museum offers a vivid glimpse into Albanian life during the Ottoman period, showcasing authentic furniture, handmade textiles, copper kitchenware, and traditional clothing. Visitors can explore each room to see how families lived, cooked, and entertained guests centuries ago. The house also features a charming courtyard and wooden balcony with views of the castle walls — perfect for photos and a quiet moment to take in the atmosphere.

45 min

Wander through the Old Bazaar of Kruja, one of the oldest and most atmospheric markets in Albania. Its cobbled lanes are lined with wooden stalls where local artisans sell handwoven rugs, copper crafts, filigree jewelry, carved wood, antiques, and traditional souvenirs. Travelers can watch craftsmen at work, chat with friendly shopkeepers, and learn about centuries-old techniques passed down through generations. The bazaar’s lively colors and mountain backdrop make it a perfect place for photos, browsing, and finding authentic handmade gifts.

Discover the Gjergj Kastrioti National Museum (Skanderbeg Museum), dedicated to Albania’s most celebrated hero — Skanderbeg, who led the 15th-century resistance against the Ottoman Empire. Located within the Kruja Castle walls, the museum tells the story of his legendary battles and the unity of Albanian principalities. Inside, visitors can explore maps, weapons, armor, heraldic symbols, and paintings that portray Albania’s medieval history and Skanderbeg’s enduring legacy. A cheap, rich and relaxing way to see the town of Kruja

Pickup was early our guide was intelectual, well spoken and funny. We got a brief history lesson on the drive up to Kruja then a walkthrough of the town and the bazzar up to the castle. Here we got some more history and a chance to take som pictures. When the tour was over got arround 2 overs of free time before we had to return to the bus. We then got driven back to our hotell. A really good and cheap trip.

Worthwhile trip

Great half day trip to Kruga Castle, guided by Aurel, who was very informative about Kruga and Albania in general, both historically and the present day. A great sense of humour. Worthwhile visiting the Ethnographic Museum whilst there. Highly recommended.

Arber was an absolutely fantastic tour guide — the kind of person who makes you feel like you’re exploring a castle with a very knowledgeable friend rather than a stranger. He was friendly, well‑informed, and somehow managed to keep an eye on us even when we drifted away from the larger group like two curious pigeons. He kept us updated on every pick‑up point, every meeting spot, and every “don’t worry, I haven’t lost you yet” moment. And then — the highlight — he offered us chips and drinks. Honestly, that alone deserves five stars. Nothing says hospitality like surprise snacks in the middle of a castle tour. Me and my friend felt safe, entertained, and very well looked after. The castle path was slippery (the kind of slippery where you start negotiating with gravity), and one tourist was quite scared. Arber helped her the entire way, like a medieval knight escorting someone through a quest. If chivalry ever makes a comeback, he’s already ahead of the game. The place itself was mesmerising — the kind of scenery that makes you want to take 200 photos and then realise none of them capture how beautiful it actually was. Overall, it was a wonderful experience: a great guide, a magical place, and a tour sprinkled with kindness, humour, and snacks. Honestly, what more could anyone want?

Very nice!

We had a very nice day with driver Eni and his colleague. Nice conversations, room for a joke and interesting history. They know their languages well, both speak fluent English and French (Maybe even more languages but we didn't ask). Welcoming and cozy. Kruija was very nice. We had no time for the castle after the bazar. Maybe a tip to start there. The bazar was also very nice. The people are friendly and the view is phenomenally beautiful.
