Osaka Castle was originally built in the late 16th century by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, one of Japan's most famous warlords and unifiers. Hideyoshi began its construction in 1583, after his successful conquest of the region, with the goal of consolidating his power and creating a grand symbol of his rule. The castle was designed to reflect his ambition, with large walls, impressive gates, and a central main keep (tenshu) that was to be a symbol of his authority.
Dotonbori (道頓堀) is a vibrant and famous district in the heart of Osaka, known for its bustling atmosphere, neon lights, street food, entertainment, and cultural landmarks. It's one of the city's most iconic areas, drawing both locals and tourists alike. Dotonbori was originally a canal built in the early 17th century (around 1612) by a wealthy merchant named Doton Yasui. He envisioned the canal as a way to improve the area’s commercial prospects. Over time, the district around the canal became a major entertainment and theater hub. By the Edo period, Dotonbori was famous for its kabuki theaters, puppet shows, and other live performances.

We asked our chosen itinerary travel rep to make adjustments on the actual itinerary to guide us from Tokyo to Kobe. Having never been to Japan, we wanted to make sure we had a knowledgeable guide who was familiar with the way things worked. Our guide, Silvy, was attentive, polite, charming and caring. She made sure we had time to visit shrines, eat at an awesome local Osaka udon restaurant for an impromptu lunch and even invented a tour on day 2 for my partner while I was away.
