Come Explore Ketchikan Alaska with the locals. First, Herring Cove this cove is home to many black bear. Not only do you have the chance to see black bear there are also eagle, harbor seal, and starting in June thousands of salmon running up the creek. Next, over to a small beach for scenic views. Take a picture in front of a 600 year old Sitka Spruce tree. Plus during the salmon run you will see the fishermen out for the catch of the day. Last, head even further out of town the Rainbow falls. This waterfall is a beautiful backdrop for photos. After a rain be prepared for water to spray out. if there hasn't been rain you can see the greenery and rocks behind the falls. All tours are guided by local women. Water, Chips, small candy, and rain ponchos are all provided. Wildlife not Guaranteed. This is not a hiking tour. Stops require the ability to take 30 steps. Jody is incredibly knowledgeable about Ketchican and the surrounding area. My husband and I so wanted to see bears in the wild but we arrived very late in the season. Nevertheless Jody took us to waterfalls, salmon spawning and the place she felt we might most get a chance to see a bear. She told us no one had see any for the last four days, but her persistence paid off and we saw not one, but three bears!! We loved the tour and Jody!
Our guide Jody was awesome. We Got the personal touch with a pickup. Very knowledgeable about the area and giving us tidbits. She accommodated our needs for bathroom breaks and a stop. Told us where to look for the bears. We did not get lucky but she told us that late September might be the time the bears are getting full and may be going into hibernation. So make sure to look into that when booking. Offered rain coats and binoculars if you forgot yours.

Our tour guide Pam was a delight however we were extremely disappointed when by the end of the tour we had not sighted even a hint of a bear. When we returned to our cruise ship we saw photos from passengers that showed every other operator had managed to see bears that morning. Our operator drove us to areas that appeared to b highly popular. There were vans, buses constantly arriving/leaving, it was no wonder a bear did not appear. We saw an eagle high in a tree, not because our operator pointed it out but a member of the public did. For the money we paid we were very disappointed.
You are not guaranteed to see a bear but they try their hardest. So friendly and we love how it was a local guiding us. Pam was OUTSTANDING and Funny!!!
We had such a great experience with Average Alaskan Tours! We were picked up right on time at Ward Cove, which made everything super easy coming from our cruise ship. Our tour guide was Jody and one of our favorite parts was how small and personal the tour was — it was just us! Jody has so much knowledge and made our experience wonderful. It was so much nicer than being packed into a large tour bus. We were incredibly lucky and got to see a bear 🐻 catching salmon and a bald eagle (2-in-1), which was definitely one of the highlights of our entire Alaska trip! We also visited a beautiful waterfall. The whole experience felt relaxed and never rushed, and we got to really enjoy the beauty and wildlife of Alaska. If you’re coming into Ketchikan on a cruise and want something more personal than one of the big cruise excursions, we highly recommend Average Alaskan Tours!
Great excursion! We didn’t get to see bears but they were determined to try & get us to! Loved the determination! Everything else we saw was also incredible!
