My wife and I had the pleasure of having Franz as our tour guide to the Salkantay Trek 5 day premium. He was very accommodating to our first time in Peru and journey through the mountains. He was able to handle our 10 person crew with no issues. The trek was amazing. we had great weather throughout the several days. Great accommodations in the middle of nowhere. The chef and support staff provided nutritious filing meals.

I’m not a hiker but…
Chachy, we had a wonderful trip with you, Saul and the rest of the staff. Special thanks to Saul for looking after my wife the entire way. She was the slow one in the group.
Thank you for sharing so much of your country and the history of this trail and your people. Thank you Pacha Mama for the beautiful weather during our hike.

Franz is the GOAT
Amazing experience with the Andean Goat, Franz! He kept us safe, guided us along the trail, taught us so much about Andean history and culture, as well as the plants and trees and mountains. He ran a small support team of our chef and porter. Delicious and nutritious food! The hike was difficult but WELL worth it.

Amazing experience with Salkantay Treking.
We had a wonderful experience with Salkantay Treking. The scenery was beautiful, the food was great and the accommodations terrific! Kenneth Leon, our guide, was great! He was passionate, engaging, knowledgeable, patient, encouraging and fun! All of the staff was wonderful! The sun shone bright on our final day at Machu Pichu and it was magical! The trek, at times difficult, but an anmazing experience!

Review of Private Premium Salkantay Trek
My husband and I just completed the premium private 5 day private trek and spoiler alert, it was totally worth it.
Saul was our trip guide did a fabulous job of making sure we were always safe and taken care of every step of the way. In addition, Saul and the team (including the porter and chef) did a great job of constantly adapting to changing conditions keeping energy and optimism levels up for five straight days.
I never realized just how much effort each team member puts in, especially the guide. The guide is with you at all times ensuring you understand the itinerary for the day, coordinating with the team on meal times and lodging, sharing knowledge / history about Peru, adapting plans as needed, and completing all of the hike with you. It’s an incredible amount of work and my husband and I are so appreciative of Saul.
Regarding the experience itself:
1. Being driven in Cusco gets 5 out of 5 stars so it was great to have that taken care of.
2. Lodging
- Sky Camp 2 out of 5, beautiful location but the domes are hard to get in and out of especially if you are tall. No shower and shared bathrooms. It’s camping :-) with an awesome view.
- Mountain Lodge 5 out of 5 private accommodations, showers, bathrooms, and beautiful views.
- Jungle Dome 3.5 out of 5 - amazing space, views and amenities, but you are in the jungle and you should expect a few bugs in the room (spiders, ants, etc.)
3. Food 5 out of 5, this is the most I’ve ever eaten in my life. The team went above and beyond to ensure my dietary needs were met and this is as good as it gets for camping food.
4. Hiking, overall great some days were great others felt like a means to an end. Trails are crowded but the guides do a great job of staggering start times to help alleviate traffic jams. Saul did a great job of helping us pace and even let us go faster on the days we felt ready to do so.
- Day 1: Humantay Lake 5 out of 5, beautiful views.
- Day 2: Salkantay Pass 5 out of 5, altitude sickness is real, we tried two days in Cusco and 3 days on Diamox before the trip and still ended up using horses to complete the Salkantay pass day 2. But the views were amazing.
- Day 5: Machu Pichu and Huayna Pichu 10 out of 5. This day far exceeded our expectations and was amazing. No shortage of rude people trying to be insta-famous or not minding manners on the trail - that said, do not skip this trail.
5. Trains 4 out 5 stars.
- One, I wouldn’t make the trek to Aguas Calientes, it looks daunting. Flat, rocky, boring and when the sun is out unbearable. The hidroeléctrica was included in our package and although we had to wait a couple of hours between when we finished our hike and our scheduled departure time, it was worth it.
- PeruRail Vistadome, overall a much better experience. They had snacks, drinks, live music and dancing it was a lot of fun and made part one of the trek back to Cusco more enjoyable.
Things I wish I knew or would do differently.
- My bank would only let me withdraw 400 sols per day, be mindful of that when trying to ensure you have enough sols for the trip.
- There are so many people that help make this trip amazing, not just your guide, porter and chef so be sure to bring extra sols to tip.
- Toilets at rest stops on the trail cost 1-2 sols, make sure you have small bills or change.
- Skip the hot springs in Day 3. It’s an hour drive to the spot and it’s essentially a public pool that’s extremely crowded, lukewarm water, and mosquito central. The second we were done we were instantly eaten alive and have the welts to prove it. Pass.
I’d 100% recommend this trek.

Fabulous trip!
Fantastic experience. It was very difficult at times, but also very rewarding. I feel extremely fortunate to have traveled to this beautiful country, steeped in history with absolutely stunning scenery. The Peruvian people who we met were friendly and kind, the food was plentiful and well prepared.
Our tour group had great chemistry and our guide, Fredy Apaza Pumasomqo, was extremely knowledgable and helpful. ❤️

10/10 ⭐️
Me and my group had a fantastic time and Julio Cesar Choque was the best! He was extremely supportive kind knowledgeable and passionate. I loved learning about Inka and Quechua history. The accommodations and food were great but I think we had the best guide! Of course Machu Picchu was fantastic but with out Julio it would’ve just been rocks and nothing else. This was my first multi day trek and I may have bit off more then I could chew but with Julio I got it done! It was a very challenging hike that made me push myself but I finished it and I’m proud to have. But when I’m looking back on this trip I think the trek is what will stand out to me!

Amazing experience
We did the Premium Salkantay 5 day 4 night trek. Our tour guide was Julio Cesar Choque and he was AMAZING! We learned so much from him, he is so knowledgeable. This was my whole groups first time doing a multi-day trek and it definitely was challenging on the body but Julio always made sure we were all doing good. Peru has so much culture with even more history. I’d definitely recommend this trek to anyone who wants to see the beautiful nature of Peru, challenge themselves, and learn about the history. But more importantly if you can choose a tour guide, pick Julio!!! Thank you Salkantay Trekking.

Highly recommend this trek
I had an amazing trek with my partner! The entire Salkantay Trekking team took care of us at every step. Most appreciated was our guide Franz who was so passionate about the area and its history! Franz is the best. We also loved the food prepared by Jhojan and his assistant chef Nemesio. The trek is challenging but rewarding, especially the hike up to Salkantay Pass. But it is absolutely worth it! The accommodations and train to Aguas Calientes for the premium trek are also great and worth the extra cost!
