The DMZ needs a passport and advance booking
Tours run on set days, your passport number goes in at booking and the passport itself is checked at the checkpoint. Access to the Joint Security Area — the blue huts — is suspended more often than not for political reasons; the rest of the tour runs regardless.
The Seoul metro is among the best anywhere
English signage and announcements throughout, and a T-money card that also works on buses, taxis and convenience stores nationwide. Buy one at any station machine; it makes the whole country navigable.
Two weeks a year the whole country travels
Cherry blossom in early April and autumn colour in late October and early November are domestic travel peaks — trains, hotels and the mountain national parks fill with Korean travellers. Both are beautiful; neither is a quiet time to arrive.
Wear hanbok and the palaces are free
Traditional dress gets free entry to Gyeongbokgung and the other main palaces, and rental shops sit outside every gate. It is not a tourist gimmick imposed on anyone — plenty of Koreans do it too, and it genuinely saves the ticket.
Jeju is a different island and climate
An hour by plane from Seoul on one of the busiest air routes in the world. Volcanic, subtropical, UNESCO-listed for its lava tubes and crater, and Korea’s own holiday destination rather than an international one.
Seoul is cheaper than its peers
Its median tour is €51 against a global median of €60 — below the world average and well under Tokyo. Food, transport and guiding are all good value for a developed Asian capital.

How many days do you need in South Korea?
Four days for Seoul including a DMZ trip. A week adds Busan and Gyeongju, the old Silla capital, both reachable by high-speed train in under three hours. Jeju is a further two or three days.
What does a tour in South Korea cost?

Can you visit the DMZ?
Yes, on an organised tour with a passport, booked in advance. The standard route includes the Third Tunnel and the Dora observatory. Entry to the Joint Security Area is a separate, restricted product that is frequently suspended — do not build the trip around it.
When is the best time to visit?
October, then April. Autumn gives the most stable weather of the year and the colour in the mountains; spring gives the blossom. July is the rainy season and August is humid; winter is cold, clear and cheap.
Are tours run in English?
In Seoul and on the DMZ routes, routinely. Outside the capital English departures are fewer, but signage, transport and ticketing are well translated throughout the country, so independent travel is straightforward.
