Practical info

Know before you book

The things that change a decision — not a retelling of the guidebook.

The Nile cruise is how most people see the temples

Three or four nights between Luxor and Aswan, stopping at Edfu and Kom Ombo, which are awkward to reach any other way. Sailing north from Aswan gives shorter mornings; south from Luxor gives longer ones. Either way it is a floating hotel with the sites attached.

Many tickets are sold in pieces

Entry to the Giza plateau does not include going inside a pyramid. A Valley of the Kings ticket covers three tombs, with Tutankhamun and Seti I charged separately. Photography permits are extra in several places. Budget for the add-ons rather than being surprised at each gate.

The touting at the sites is relentless

It is the most common complaint visitors make about Egypt, and a guide is the effective shield — they deflect it as a matter of routine. Camel and horse rides are rarely offered at a fixed price; agree the amount and the return trip before getting on.

Upper Egypt is unbearable in summer

Luxor and Aswan regularly pass 45°C from June to August, with no shade among the temples. The classic Nile itinerary is a winter product for good reason. The Red Sea resorts work year round because you are in the water.

The collection has moved

The Grand Egyptian Museum at Giza now holds the Tutankhamun material and the bulk of the collection, while the old museum on Tahrir Square retains part of it. Check which one your tour includes — they are an hour apart in Cairo traffic.

Cairo is cheap and tipping is constant

Its median tour is €42 against a global median of €60. Baksheesh — small tips for small services — is a normal and near-continuous part of the day. Carry a supply of small notes; it smooths almost everything.

Frequently asked

Egypt: common questions

How many days do you need in Egypt?

Eight to ten days: two or three in Cairo for Giza and the museum, then a four-night Nile cruise between Luxor and Aswan. Add three or four for the Red Sea if you want to dive or simply stop moving.

What does a tour in Egypt cost?

Cairo sits at a median of €42 in our index of 50 cities, against a global median of €60. Site entry fees have risen steadily and are a substantial part of the day; the guiding itself is inexpensive and worth paying for.

When is the best time to visit?

October to April, with December and January the most comfortable and the busiest. May to September is very hot in Cairo and severe in Luxor and Aswan, which is why prices collapse in those months.

Do you need a guide in Egypt?

Not strictly, but it changes the trip. Egyptologist guides are licensed, the sites have limited interpretation, and a guide handles the ticketing and the touting. It is one of the countries where hiring one is close to standard practice rather than a luxury.

Is a Nile cruise worth it?

Yes, for the temples between Luxor and Aswan, which are genuinely awkward to reach independently. It also removes the hotel changes and the road transfers from the middle of the trip. The quality of boats varies widely — this is a category where the price difference shows.
