Great view, great guide!

A must see and definitely worth it! The entire drive from start to finish is scenic. City views to countryside views of mountains. The castle is stunning inside and outside. Plenty of pictures and videos to take. A real breath of fresh air outside the city. Our guide Charlie was a perfect fit. Very informative and a great sense of humor. Felt like a trip with a friend not a guide.

The castle was maybe one...

The castle was maybe one of my favorite trips of all my time spent in Germany (outside of Oktoberfest itself). A couple of comments after spending a little more time in Germany: Having a guide/bus is a luxury here and we really enjoyed our experience. The lake area is also beautiful and we had a nice lunch at a spot recommended by our guide. Stopping at the little German village on the way for souvenirs and a coffee was a nice touch! The castle and surrounding views are absolutely “wow” moments. I loved the view from the bridge and the hill on the other side (worth the climb for a higher vantage point). As I note in some of my other reviews - I’d call a guide/paid tour a bit of a nicety/luxury. When you are on vacation and you are a structured person - the value is definitely there to take all timing/organization off your plate. If you are more self-sufficient or maybe want a little more time/flexibility this is definitely a trip you can manage without. Your guides are not allowed to give unique tours from the experience you pay for within the castle - which is conducted by castle staff through an audio device (separate cost and cash only).

Thank you, Joshua, for sharing your thoughts and for your advice.

🏰 Perfect Day at the Bavarian Castles

We had an excellent experience visiting the two castles, and our guide Lucy and driver Rexhep were fantastic! Lucy gave us a great overview of the history of the kings, the castles, and the surrounding area. She was extremely knowledgeable and spoke several languages, which was impressive given how many different people were in our group. She spoke clearly and slowly, so I could easily understand everything she said and follow along. Rexhep was an excellent driver. The ride was smooth and comfortable, the temperature on the bus was just right, and having a bathroom on the bus was a huge plus. There were also drinks available for purchase. The castles themselves were absolutely fantastic and beautiful to see in person. We had a perfect sunny day, which made the scenery even more amazing! We enjoyed the walk up and down to the castles and getting some exercise, but there were also transportation options available for anyone who didn’t want to make the walk. We also enjoyed a nice lunch and had plenty of time to shop for souvenirs. Overall, it was a wonderful day, and Lucy and Rexhep made the experience even better. We would definitely recommend this tour!

Good but frustrating

The day trip to King Ludwig’s two castles was unfortunately disappointing from the very start. The meeting point offered little shelter from the weather, and due to confusion between the tour leaders and drivers, we were left standing in heavy rain for around 20 minutes waiting to board the bus. Beginning a full-day excursion soaked through is hardly an ideal introduction and left many of us uncomfortable for much of the day. Once we arrived at the destinations, a significant portion of the day seemed to be spent waiting between the actual castle tours. Given the poor weather, these lengthy gaps felt particularly frustrating and, at times, unnecessary. Rather than making the most of the day, it often felt as though we were simply passing time until the next scheduled activity. To add to the disappointment, the return journey ran late, meaning we arrived back much later than expected. As a result, the evening plans we had hoped to enjoy were effectively lost, leaving little time for anything beyond finding somewhere to have dinner. There were, however, two redeeming aspects. The refreshments available on the bus were appreciated throughout the day, and our tour guide, Mark, did an excellent job under difficult circumstances. He remained informative, engaging, and patient, and managed to keep a very diverse group of tourists organized despite many people not paying attention to instructions. Overall, while the castles themselves were certainly worth seeing, the delays, long periods of waiting, poor weather, and logistical frustrations overshadowed much of the experience. If anything, the day simply reaffirmed why I generally dislike organized tours, too much time is spent waiting around, plans are often delayed, and too much of the experience feels outside your control.

Operator response

Thank you for your nuanced review and please excuse us getting back only today. Obviously, some things added up: your general dislike of guided tours, the poor weather, etc. We are sorry you experienced the consequences related to these ones. On the other hand, we appreciate your friendly feedback regarding our team, thanks for that!

Be prepared to walk up to...

Be prepared to walk up to the castle if the shuttle is not available for a spectacular view. We did it in 20 degree weather. Walking downhill was much faster. Beautiful castle.
