As a local, I enjoyed the opportunity that, for me, was a lesser-known cemetery. It was great to be present there and learn the history and current-day usage.

As a department of the Preservation Resource Center, Save Our Cemeteries is the only non-profit tour operator directly supporting restoration, education, and advocacy in New Orleans cemeteries. Now is your chance to tour one of the least visited but most popular cemeteries in New Orleans. St. Roch Cemetery, founded in 1874, was established by the Rev. Peter Leonard Thevis. According to legend, during the deadly outbreak of yellow fever in 1868, Rev. Thevis prayed to St. Roch, the Patron Saint of Good Health, and vowed to build a chapel to the Saint if his congregation was spared. When no one died, a shrine and a chapel were built. The locals continued to revere St. Roch for graces of welfare and remission. For decades, believers left their polio braces, glass eyes, dental plates, and other parts of their prosthetic selves when their health recovered. These are on view in the chapel which is ONLY open on the first Friday of each month from 11:00 am to noon.

An annual procession of the 14 stations is still celebrated every year on Good Friday.

As a local, I enjoyed the opportunity that, for me, was a lesser-known cemetery. It was great to be present there and learn the history and current-day usage.
A very unique experience to be able to understand the history and stories of our family cemetery. A special thinks to these organization that is gone and beyond the duty to help not preserve our cemeteries, but tell about them.
What a wonderful experience! Our tour guide Dana was full of knowledge, we had a lovely time walking around and learning about different tombs. It was especially exciting to go into the chapel and learn about Saint Roch and all the people who still leave offering to this day!
Dana was a pleasant and thorough guide. Her tour showed us many facets of information, ranging from architectural to historical and highlighting the influences and reasons for each point discussed. She was great about answering questions and had a deep knowledge and history with the subject. The mood was light but respectful which was nice given the subject of the tour.
Previous to this tour, I wouldn’t consider myself an avid Cemetery Tour Gal. However, my tour guide Dana completely won me over today! She is clearly well educated in St. Roch Cemetery history, and her bubbly personality is infectious! The tour was around fifteen people, which I thought was a good, manageable size. I went on the 10 am tour and it was the perfect time and weather; There wasn’t a cloud in the sky! We took a tour of the outer tombs first, and then went into the St. Roch chapel. The whole tour was fascinating and in depth, while also being mindful and respectful to the passed loved ones’ burials. I would recommend this tour. No negatives. Perfect length, great guide, loved my group, and would definitely go to another Save our Cemeteries Tour.
Dana, my guide was both knowledgeable and wonderfully friendly. It felt like touring the grounds with an old friend.
Amazing. The cemetery is so beautiful and the guide was very knowledgeable. The shrine in the chapel is very moving.
