Pompeii was an ancient Roman town near modern Naples. Its initial rediscovery was in 1599 and there was a broader rediscovery almost 150 years later in 1748. You will see many villas and temples that were destroyed and buried under 13 to 20 feet of volcanic ash and pumice in the Mount Vesuvius eruption in AD 79.
