Hall of Benevolence and Longevity
Admission included20 min

Your Summer Palace adventure kicks off with meeting your dedicated guide either at the meeting point or with a convenient hotel pickup, based on your selected tour package. Once you connect, your immersive journey into this imperial garden’s timeless charm and profound history commences, departing from the East Gate. Here, your guide will gather you by a map to deliver a detailed overview of the Summer Palace: its imperial origins, pivotal role in Qing Dynasty life, and the masterful architectural layout that crowns it a masterpiece of classical Chinese gardening. Your first stop is the Hall of Benevolence and Longevity—the former principal administrative hall of the Summer Palace, where Qing emperors once held court and received officials. Your guide will walk you through its opulent imperial decor, elaborate on its critical role in state affairs, and share vivid stories of how rulers including Emperor Guangxu and Empress Dowager Cixi utilized this hall to manage court business.

Hall of Happiness and Longevity
Admission included20 min

Next, you’ll move to Magnolia Hall, a serene courtyard-style building once used as a retreat by Emperor Guangxu. Named for the magnolia trees that bloom here in spring, this hall holds poignant historical ties—your guide will recount how it became a de facto place of confinement for Guangxu after the failure of the Hundred Days’ Reform, painting a vivid picture of his later years. From there, you’ll head to Hall of Joyful Longevity, Empress Dowager Cixi’s primary residence in the Summer Palace. Adorned with luxurious furnishings and surrounded by a lush garden, this hall offers a glimpse into Cixi’s daily life; your guide will share anecdotes about her routines, her love for the garden, and how she exerted influence over the Qing court from this tranquil space.

Long Corridor at the Summer Palace
Admission included20 min

After exploring these three key halls, you’ll stroll along the Long Corridor, the longest covered walkway in the world at over 728 meters with 273 bays. Its ceiling is adorned with more than 14,000 colorful paintings—depicting scenes from Chinese mythology, history, and literature—and as you walk, your guide will pick out notable artworks, sharing the folk tales and historical events behind them, turning a simple stroll into an engaging lesson in art and lore.

Tower of Buddhist Incense(Summer Palace)
Admission included30 min

When you reach the Summer Palace’s Central Axis—the core of the garden’s layout, designed to emphasize imperial grandeur—you’ll ascend to Tower of Buddhist Incense. Perched atop Longevity Hill, this towering structure is the garden’s visual and spiritual center; inside, simple yet insightful exhibitions showcase cultural relics like ancient Buddhist statues and architectural models, while from its upper levels, you’ll enjoy sweeping views of Kunming Lake, the Seventeen-Arch Bridge, and the surrounding gardens—your guide will point out these landmarks and explain how they fit into the axis’s symmetrical design.

Pass by

If you’ve opted for the 6-hour in-depth tour, the adventure doesn’t stop there. Beyond the above highlights, you’ll explore additional sites to dig deeper into the Summer Palace’s legacy: first, Garden of Virtue and Harmony, an imperial garden within the larger complex that’s home to one of China’s largest ancient opera houses. This grand theater, with three tiers and intricate stage machinery, was built for Cixi’s birthday celebrations—your guide will explain its unique acoustic design (which allows performances to be heard clearly without amplification), its elaborate backdrops, and how it hosted lavish operas that entertained the imperial court.

Suzhou Market Street
Pass by

Then, depending on your interests, you’ll either wander Suzhou Street—a recreated Qing-era commercial street along Kunming Lake’s northern bank, lined with traditional shops that mimic the style of Suzhou’s water towns, offering a glimpse into the daily commerce of the imperial era—or visit the Seventeen-Arch Bridge, which spans the eastern end of Kunming Lake. With 17 arches, this bridge is a masterpiece of classical Chinese bridge design; your guide will share stories of its construction and how it was used by the imperial family to cross to Nanhu Island. In either case, your guide will tie these spots to late Qing history, weaving in tales of Cixi’s extravagances, Guangxu’s struggles, and the broader political and cultural shifts of the time, ensuring that by the end of your tour, you’ve not just visited a garden, but uncovered the rich, often untold stories that make the Summer Palace a true treasure of Chinese heritage.

Kunming Lake
Pass by

Return to the Central Axis and continue along the Long Corridor until you reach its western end: the Marble Boat. This unique stone vessel, with its Western-style hull and Chinese-style roof, stands out amid the garden’s traditional architecture. Your guide will reveal the story behind its construction—commissioned by Empress Dowager Cixi using funds originally earmarked for the imperial navy—and explain its symbolic meaning as a “permanent ship” representing the Qing Dynasty’s desire for stability, wrapping up this part of your tour with a thought-provoking historical insight. During the tour you will not feel been rushed. Once the tour finished near the Marble boat, you can continue to explore more of the Summer Palace gardens or your guide will give suggestions on how to get to your next destinations and how. (if you choose the tour with transfer, your driver will take you back to your hotel or next place)

Summer palace - of the best tours we’ve had!

Our 4 hour tour in the Summer Palace was incredible! Our Guide Mike picked us up at the Hotel and showed us how to use the Metro in Beijing while giving us inside information on the construction and plan of it, a great way to get to know how to use the Chinese metro! Upon arrival, he described the construction and plan of the palace and garden and told us all the background stories about the monument, its variety of stones/statues and always described their Chinese meaning very thoroughly. We never would have known about the history and meaning behind all the little details which form the big heritage of the summer palace. Mike even took us up to the temple on top of the hill for some great views over the lake and the city. He always gave us plenty of time to take photos and even took some of us in front of big monuments! Long story short, without Mike we would’ve missed out on the hidden history behind this gem of a garden palace. What a great tour to get to know Chinese history and also a bit of Chinese customs!

Great experience with Sherry

Sherry was a great guide! She explained everything about the summer palace and generally about chinese culture, it was great to meet her. The tour was valuable, it was just the 4 of us. We visited the most important part of the palace with sherry but we had also some time alone. We took the boat and visited the Tower of Buddhist incense, these tickets were not included in the tour price but available on site. Highly recommended! :)

Ranee is amazing!!

Renee is the absolute BEST. She picked me up for my tour in my hotel lobby and was very sweet. We left early and got to see the all the animals at the zoo before we went on a boat ride to the summer palace. She gave amazing information about the history and was fun to be with. After the summer palace we went to the markets and she showed me around and we had food together, and we finished at an amazing tea ceremony. She offered to keep going but I chose to return to my hotel. She gave me some food recommendations and helped me set up another tour as well. I also had a group tour two days later where my phone stopped working and I was lost, unable to find the meeting point for my tour. Ranee was in the area, when my signal briefly came back she called me, and managed to find me and ran me over to my guide even though it wasn’t in her obligations. Truly an amazing woman and a great tour guide. Such a fun experience to have!

Amazing summer palace tour with Alice J

Thank you so much for organizing such a wonderful experience in Beijing! We had an amazing time in the summer palace with Alice who was great at telling us about the history and culture of the palace and was extremely knowledgeable and gave us loads of details on the evolution of the palace and the gardens through times. We’re truly lucky for having Alice J as our guide as she is also an amazing photographer so if you want to have amazing pictures that will last for a lifetime please ask for her! She is very kind, and showered us with warmth, and professionalism. Everything was even better with Alice. And please also extend our gratitude to the driver who helped us travel through the very busy streets of Beijing. We would be happy to recommend you, and if we ever return to China, we’ll definitely reach out to you again! Many many thanks, Elena

Beautiful palace grounds

We enjoyed the Summer Palace so much - it was fascinating learning about the history of it from our guide Allen, who was punctual, polite and very knowledgeable as a local. He had so many fun facts to share! He also took good care of my elderly parents. Would highly recommend doing this with a guide so you can fully appreciate the palace grounds and what it stands for.

Excellent time at the Summer Palace thanks to our guide Moko

My daughter and I went on the walking tour of the Summer Palace with our guide Moko. We felt that he was an excellent guide, and we were very lucky to have been shown around the Summer Palace by him. He was very friendly and knowledgeable. His explanations were interesting, spirited, and energetic. He went at our pace and we didn't feel that it was rushed or too slow. Moko's English was excellent and we had no trouble communicating. It was a very hot day and Moko very thoughtfully gave us a spritz of a minty cooling spray and often shared the breeze from his fan towards us to help cool us down. We had done a group tour at another attraction, and we found that we much preferred having a dedicated guide to ourselves. We really enjoyed our time at the Summer Palace and Moko played a big part in that positive experience. Thanks Moko!
