This cruise was booked as a special treat for my partner's 60th birthday. We wanted something memorable and special to celebrate the occasion. Unfortunately, it turned out to be memorable for all the wrong reasons. We booked the VIP Dinner Cruise package for two at a cost of £328, which promised welcome champagne, additional canapés, upgraded seating and a premium window view. Sadly, the experience did not match what was advertised. The evening got off to a poor start when the boat arrived late. Boarding was scheduled for 19:30 with departure at 19:45, but the vessel did not arrive until around the departure time and eventually left at 20:00 when Big Ben struck the hour. Before departure, we were informed that due to low tide the cruise would finish at London Bridge rather than Westminster Pier. This resulted in an unexpected £26.20 taxi fare back to our hotel. While we received a glass of champagne on arrival, no additional canapés were provided. Our table was halfway down the boat with a side window and certainly did not feel like a premium location. The supposedly upgraded seating appeared identical to every other table on board. Service throughout the evening was disappointing. Empty champagne glasses remained on our table long after they should have been cleared; dirty plates and glasses remained on the table for the entirety of the meal. Staff appeared disengaged at times, and I even overheard one crew member reminding colleagues to remember the customer experience, which unfortunately said a lot about the service we received. The food was average at best. The broccoli and carrots were undercooked, hard and difficult to cut. One particularly disappointing moment came when the boat pulled alongside a barge for around 15 minutes to collect food. Instead of enjoying London's illuminated landmarks from our "premium" window seat, we spent that time looking at a dirty working barge with fuel warning signs. The views of London at night are beautiful, but that alone cannot justify the cost. The VIP upgrade offered very little additional value and failed to deliver what was promised. Having booked through Viator, a company I have always found to be excellent, this was particularly disappointing. Sadly, based on this experience, I would not book this cruise again and cannot recommend the VIP upgrade.
