This really was the highlight of our adventure in Peru. The early hours took some getting used to but the fantastic breakfast really made up for that. Our guide Valentin was great, he knows a lot and even though English isn’t his first language he could answer all our questions and tell us everything we needed to know. We were with a group of four people which I guess is a little on the smaller size but that definitely didn’t hurt our experience. All in all, if you’re looking for an adventure that’s still pretty doable this is a great option.
We had an amazing time on our tour with Valentin. He made sure everyone was doing well and feeling comfortable throughout the entire trek. He was incredibly supportive, friendly, and attentive from start to finish. He also taught us so much about local life and the culture of the area, as well as the fascinating history of the Incas, which I found especially interesting. Our chef, Mijael, was absolutely the best! We enjoyed so many delicious local dishes throughout the trek, and every meal was better than the last. There was always an amazing variety of options to choose from, and everything tasted incredible. It was honestly impressive to have such delicious and diverse meals while trekking. Overall, it was an unforgettable experience, and Valentin and Mijael played a huge part in making the trek so enjoyable. Highly recommended!
Our guide Valentin was really knowlegeable and kept us informed of the next steps through the 4 days. Our chef Mijael was amazing, food was tasty and there was plenty every meal. Everything went smoothly and we had beautiful views everywhere. I truly recommend you ask for Valentin and Mijael if you think of booking an alpaca expeditions trip!!
We did the 4D-3N Lares trail with our 3 children, aged 12, 11 and 9 years old, and it was a once in a lifetime experience. Everything was well organized, from the briefing the night before, over transportation to and from the hike, to the visit to Machu Picchu. Our guide Yojhan was absolutely wonderful. During our travels we have met many great guides, but Yojhan plays in a league of his own. He was really kind, always checking how everyone was feeling and making sure everyone was at ease. I was worried that we were not fit enough for such a hike, but Yojhan fit the pace perfectly for our group and kept us motivated when it got tough! Along the way, Yojhan has also taught us so much about Andean culture, flora and fauna, and ancient civilizations. We even learned some Quechwa! Yojhan was also really good with our children, learning them a lot during our days together, and we are sure they will remember this experience and meeting Andean people along the way during the rest of their lives. The rest of the staff was also fantastic. Chef Sergio and assistant-chef Edison were able to cook the most wonderful dishes in the middle of nowhere. We are still amazed they managed to bake a beautifully decorated cake to celebrate the passing of the Condor pass. Finally, our porters cannot be forgotten. Without Lorenzo and Mauro, this trip simply would not have been possible. All in all, this experience was absolutely fenomenal for our family. Don't hesitate to go on an adventure of a lifetime with Alpaca Expedition (and Yojhan in particular)!
I went with my girlfriend on the Lares trek and it was such an amazing experience with the best guide I even had (Wilber Ocon), he is friendly, smiling and knows a lot about culture, Mountain and history. Also our chef (Miguel Aranazabal) was amazing! Thank you for the experience.
Wow, so grateful for the opportunity to complete the Lares Trek with such an amazing group of people. Juan Carlos Zuloaga was the most amazing guide we could've asked for--he shared so much knowledge, history and culture of the region with us throughout our trek. He answered all of our groups endless questions about the flora/fauna as well. He made us feel extremely safe of the trek and warned us of possible dangers. He paced the trekking super well and gave us breaks as we needed. His tribute to Pachamama at the Condor Pass will stay with me always--Juan Carlos made us feely truly connected with the land throughout our journey. The food was absolutely incredible, I had no idea we would be eating such fantastic and delicious meals throughout out trek, all made possible by our amazing chef Octavio!! He even made my best friend a birthday cake on our last day!! Truly, the food was an experience all on its own--we got to connect with the culture through the food we ate on another level. (you will NOT be hungry!) Big shout out to our porters and team members as well--from setting up tents at night to ferrying our duffels to giving us warm water/warm packs at night, truly made the experience that much more enjoyable. The trek itself is very reasonable, don't underestimate the altitude or the varying temperatures as was emphasized very clearly prior to setting out. We got so lucky with weather, not a drop of rain! This trek will have you at altitude for about 36 hours, but the difficulty of the walking and hiking is very reasonable. Practically speaking, there is a lot of coordination with driving and trains to get to Machu Picchu at the end--just be prepared to be patient! Machu Picchu itself was amazing and we added on the Waynapicchu hike as well--pretty steep incline up and down, but also very doable! Highly recommend for the best views of Machu Picchu from above!! Would definitely go back for one of the other treks, but only if we can go with Juan Carlos!!
We had a fantastic experience working with Alpaca Expeditions on the Lares Trek in July of 2026. The company is very well organized and thinks of every detail that you might need during your trek. I specifically want to thank Juan Carlos Zuloaga for being the best guide I’ve ever had and making the trip seamless, educational, and fun! His wealth of knowledge really added to my experience and he was always willing to go the extra mile for our group. The food prepared by Chef Octavio blew me away and I could really tell he put his whole heart into every meal. Overall, the value you get from Alpaca is outstanding and I highly recommend everyone to book with this company and to request Juan Carlos Zuloaga as your guide!
One of the most rewarding experiences to be had in Peru. What interested us about the Lares Trek was how immersive the route was: a practically uncrowded trail, access to diverse landscapes, and a glimpse into the lifestyle of rural Andes villages. The route itself was perfectly challenging, but even if things got tough, we were given ample time to rest and recover. Our guide, Valentin, was extremely well-informed, funny, and well-spoken; it’s impossible to think of doing this trip without him. As for camping, we rented gear (tents, mats, and sleeping bags)—it was perfectly fine and comfortable. The food, cooked by the wonderful Octavio, was exactly what we needed to fuel up and continue our journey. Once the hard part was over, we were rewarded with a stunning tour of Machu Picchu—where nothing felt rushed. Truly a unique experience and was only made possible with Alpaca Expeditions. Would do it again 1000/10 times.
I had a wonderful experience on the Lares Trek private tour. I felt everyone on our Alpaca team went above and beyond to make sure our experience went smoothly. The views were gorgeous, and I loved how peaceful it was since there were barely any hikers on the route despite it being peak tourist season. I can’t recommend Valentin as a guide enough—he was excellent at explaining the culture and environment (since he’s local) and had great energy each day as well. Octavio, our chef, made delicious meals on our campsite as well.
The lares trek was a great way to see what highland/Andean life is like for the Quechua people. Our guide Fernando took great care of our group and I felt completely safe throughout the entire trek, (especially as a solo female traveler) I had 100% confidence in him and our porters, horsemen, chef. Their communication was clear and when members of the group were sick, they handled these situations professionally and with safety their priority. They made sure We were comfortable and our chef Cristobal made multiple delicious meals and a cake for the birthday of one of those in our group. The employees are Quechua and take pride in their culture, and ultimately I am so glad I picked alpaca expeditions for this trek. The views along the trek itself were breathtaking. 100% would recommend this company and lares trek if someone is looking to get in touch with Quechua culture and complete a unique trek in Sacred Valley
