Kyoto National Treasure Temple Tour & Japanese Archery experience

Description
Begin with an English-guided tour of an 800-year-old National Treasure temple, where you can experience the historic atmosphere and gain a deeper appreciation of Kyoto’s cultural heritage. You’ll then take part in kyudo (Japanese archery) using a real yumi (Japanese bow) and arrows under careful guidance. In traditional practice, students usually spend a long time training with a rubber bow before shooting real arrows. In our experience, however, even beginners can safely enjoy the feeling of drawing the bow and releasing the arrow in an authentic setting. This is more than just an activity—it’s a unique chance to experience Japanese archery and temple culture together in a way that is both accessible and deeply memorable.

It was a hot day, but totally worth it. The combination of the stunning temple, the beautiful Buddha statues, and the kyudo experience itself made it impossible to regret a single moment. Come prepared for the heat and you won't be disappointed. Enjoy your trip!😊
Thank you so much for your kind review! We're delighted to hear that, despite the summer heat, you enjoyed every part of the experience. Kyoto's summers can certainly be hot, but we're glad the peaceful atmosphere of Daihoonji Temple, its beautiful Buddhist statues, and the kyudo practice made the day worthwhile. Thank you for your encouraging words, and we hope to welcome you back to Sangetsu Kyudo on your next visit to Kyoto. Safe travels, and we wish you many more wonderful adventures! 😊
Okay this was genuinely one of the coolest things I did in Japan!! I had zero experience with archery but the instruction was so clear that I actually felt like I knew what I was doing by the end. The temple and the Buddha statues were also stunning. 100% recommend if you’re looking for something different!
Thank you so much for your wonderful review! We're thrilled to hear that this was one of the coolest experiences of your trip to Japan. It's especially rewarding to know that, even as a complete beginner, you felt confident by the end of the session. That's exactly what Yamaguchi Sensei hopes every guest can experience. We're also glad you enjoyed the beauty of Daihoonji Temple and its remarkable Buddhist statues. Thank you for recommending us, and we hope to welcome you back to Sangetsu Kyudo the next time you're in Kyoto!
Kyudo is not just archery. It's moving mediation. Every draw forces you to slow down, breathe, and tune out everything else. I came in expecting a fun activity and left with a surprisingly calm mind. If you're looking for something that genuinely quiets noise, this is it.
Thank you so much for your wonderful review! We're truly happy to hear that you experienced the deeper spirit of kyudo. As you beautifully expressed, kyudo is much more than archery. It is a practice of calming the mind, focusing on the present moment, and finding harmony through each movement. We hope the sense of peace you found during your practice stays with you long after your journey. It would be our pleasure to welcome you back to Sangetsu Kyudo whenever you're in Kyoto again.
The experience begins before you even pick up a bow. Walking through Daihoji temple, you’re surrounded by centuries-old Buddha statues that are nothing short of breathtaking. The main hall has a quiet grandeur that sets the perfect tone for what follows. A truly special place, far from the tourist crowds.
Thank you so much for your beautiful review! We're delighted that the atmosphere of Daihoonji Temple became such a memorable part of your experience. We believe kyudo begins long before drawing the bow, and the peaceful surroundings, historic architecture, and centuries-old Buddhist treasures all help create the right mindset. Thank you for appreciating this special place. We hope to welcome you back to Sangetsu Kyudo the next time you're in Kyoto.
I’d known about Kyudo through anime for years, and I’d always wanted the chance to try it myself. Before my trip to Japan, I came across this experience and knew I had to book it—it honestly felt like a little dream come true. It was much harder than I expected! Every movement has a purpose, and I quickly realized it isn’t just about hitting the target. It takes a lot of patience and concentration, which made every successful shot feel even more rewarding. I’d recommend wearing comfortable clothes that are easy to move in, as you’ll be focusing on your posture and movements throughout the session. Practicing at such a beautiful temple made the whole experience even more special. If I ever get the chance to do it again, I’d love to wear the traditional Japanese archery uniform—it would make the experience feel even more immersive. By the end of the session, I had a much greater appreciation for Kyudo and why people dedicate so much time to it. If you’re looking for a traditional Japanese experience that’s a little different from the usual sightseeing, I’d definitely recommend giving this a try.
Thank you so much for your thoughtful and heartfelt review! We're truly honored that trying kyudo was a dream come true for you. As you discovered, kyudo is about much more than hitting the target, every movement carries meaning, and the journey of patience and concentration is what makes each successful shot so rewarding. We're also delighted that practicing at the temple made the experience even more memorable. We'd love to welcome you back someday, and next time we hope you'll enjoy practicing in traditional kyudo attire for an even more immersive experience. Thank you again for choosing Sangetsu Kyudo. We hope the spirit of kyudo stays with you wherever your journey takes you, and we look forward to seeing you again in Kyoto!
This was one of the highlights of my Kyoto trip! Before shooting, we learned the etiquette and philosophy of Kyudo, which made the experience much more meaningful. The instructor was incredibly patient and guided us step by step, so even complete beginners don’t need to worry. In today’s world of constant distractions, drawing the bow and focusing on the target brought a rare sense of calm. It was a wonderful way to practice mindfulness while experiencing an authentic Japanese tradition. Highly recommended!
Thank you so much for your wonderful review! We're delighted to hear that our kyudo experience was one of the highlights of your trip to Kyoto. Kyudo is not only about hitting the target, but also about learning patience, focus, and respect through each movement. We're happy that you were able to experience both its philosophy and its sense of calm. Thank you for your kind words about Yamaguchi Sensei's instruction. We hope the mindfulness you discovered through kyudo will stay with you long after your journey in Japan. We'd love to welcome you back to Sangetsu Kyudo whenever you're in Kyoto again!
Got some rain that day but honestly, it didn't matter at all. The temple tour is indoors (the rain actually gave it this crazy good, moody vibe!), and the archery setup is totally covered. Such a solid experience. It kicks off with you checking out these amazing, centuries-old statues in the temple. Then you hit the dojo. The master just gets you totally locked in, just you, the moment, and the target. Don't skip this.
Thank you for sharing such a lively and thoughtful review. We are so glad to hear that the rain did not take away from the experience and even added a special, atmospheric feeling to the temple visit. The indoor temple tour and covered archery area allow guests to enjoy the experience comfortably in different weather conditions, so we are happy that this worked well for you. It is wonderful to know that the centuries-old statues, the dojo, and the focused guidance of the master all came together to create a memorable experience. We truly appreciate your recommendation and your vivid description of the day.
A small kyudo practice hall located beside a historic temple. The setting is peaceful, and the facilities are well equipped, with beginner-friendly targets as well as the standard 28-meter targets for experienced kyudo practitioners. The instructor and assistants are kind, patient, and supportive. Highly recommended!
Thank you for your generous review and recommendation. We are pleased that you noticed both the peaceful setting beside the historic temple and the variety of facilities available in the practice hall. We hope to make the experience approachable for first-time visitors while still offering a meaningful challenge for those with previous kyudo experience. It is also very encouraging to hear that the instructor and assistants helped create a kind and supportive atmosphere. We appreciate you taking the time to share your impressions.
This experience beautifully combines two things I didn't expect to find together. The tour includes a visit to the temple, where the nationally designated Buddhist statue and the main hall stand with a quiet, commanding presence — simply breathtaking. Then, stepping into the world of kyudo, I was equally struck by the instructor. His poise, precision, and depth of knowledge were remarkable. You can feel the years of dedicated practice in every movement she makes. A truly rare experience that nourishes both the eyes and the spirit.
We sincerely appreciate your beautiful and thoughtful review. It is a pleasure to hear that the temple visit and the kyudo practice felt so deeply connected for you. The quiet presence of the main hall and the nationally designated Buddhist statue is something we treasure, and we are glad that their atmosphere left such a strong impression. We are also grateful for your kind words about the instructor. Kyudo is built through many years of steady practice, and it means a great deal that you could sense that dedication through the movements and guidance. Thank you for describing the experience in such a meaningful way. We are honored that it became a moment that nourished both the eyes and the spirit.
As a complete beginner, I really appreciated that they start you off with a larger target that's much easier to hit — the moment the arrow actually landed, I felt an incredible rush of satisfaction! Once you get the hang of it, you even get to try the official 28-meter kyudo range, which is a whole different challenge. I'll be honest — I missed most of my shots there, but that just made me want to keep going. I only wish the session were longer. There's something deeply addictive about this sport, and I could have easily spent the whole day there.
Thank you for such a vivid and enjoyable review. We are delighted that your first shot experience gave you that exciting feeling of satisfaction. Starting with a larger target helps beginners feel the movement of kyudo more naturally, so it is wonderful to hear that it made the experience rewarding for you. The 28-meter range is indeed a very different challenge, even for many regular practitioners. Missing the target is also part of kyudo, and we are happy that it made you want to continue rather than give up. Your words capture the quiet but addictive appeal of this practice beautifully. We are very glad you enjoyed your time with us.
