A Truly Unique and Unforgettable Experience

This was truly a fascinating and special experience! At the beginning of the experience, our host introduced us to the beautiful surroundings of Ikai-in, as well as the meanings and symbolism behind its four gardens, representing the four directions. Through the host’s engaging and insightful explanations, we learned about the ideas and philosophy behind the design of these traditional Japanese gardens, as well as the stories and meanings hidden within them. One of the most unique parts of the experience was having the opportunity to create our own karesansui, or dry landscape garden. Using a traditional tool, we carefully drew patterns in the fine gravel to create the appearance of flowing water. Karesansui is a beautiful and iconic element of Japanese gardens, and I had seen many stunning examples at temples while traveling around Kyoto. Being able to actually create one myself this time was such a special opportunity, and I truly enjoyed it! Another highlight was having the rare opportunity to watch a maiko perform from such a close distance. Our host gave us a detailed introduction to the history, background, and traditional costumes of maiko and geiko, and we also had the chance to hear about the maiko’s own journey. It really gave us a deeper understanding of how much dedication, training, and hard work it takes to become a maiko or geiko. The beautiful maiko then performed two traditional pieces for us. Her elegant and poetic performance was truly captivating, allowing us to completely immerse ourselves in such a beautiful and memorable moment. Overall, I would describe this as an exceptional and truly one-of-a-kind experience. What makes it even more special is that it takes place inside Ikai-in, which is normally not open to the public. Not only did we have the rare opportunity to admire the temple’s beautiful gardens, but we could also take part in a hands-on activity, listen to thoughtful and fascinating explanations from our host, and, of course, enjoy the highlight of the experience—the maiko performance. Every part of the experience was carefully prepared and meaningful, making it something that is truly difficult to experience elsewhere. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a unique and memorable cultural experience in Kyoto!

A truly special Kyoto experience ✨

It was such a wonderful experience! I heard that Ikka-in Temple is usually difficult to enter, so being able to spend time in such a special place became a truly precious memory. I had seen Zen gardens and dry landscape gardens at many temples before, but this was my first time learning about their meaning, actually stepping into a garden, and even creating the sand patterns myself. It gave me a whole new perspective on Zen culture and allowed me to experience its depth in a way that simply looking at a garden cannot. I was also completely enchanted by meeting a Maiko up close. It was such a luxurious experience—not only watching her beautiful dance, but also having the opportunity to talk with her and take photos together. Seeing her dressed in a beautiful kimono made the experience even more memorable. This private and intimate experience gave me a wonderful opportunity to immerse myself in traditional Japanese culture and truly enjoy the atmosphere of Kyoto. If you’re visiting Kyoto, I would definitely recommend this experience. Tofuku-ji Temple and several other beautiful temples are also nearby, making this a great area to explore together. ♪

Maiko, Zen Garden, and a Beautiful Private Temple Experience

This was a truly special private experience in Kyoto. At Ikka-in, a beautiful Zen temple near Tofuku-ji, we had the chance to experience traditional Japanese culture in a very peaceful and intimate setting. The atmosphere of the temple was calm and quiet, and it felt like a unique opportunity to experience a side of Kyoto that is difficult to find in more crowded tourist areas. One of the most memorable parts of the experience was meeting a Maiko and learning more about traditional Japanese culture in such a close and relaxed environment. We also enjoyed delicious Japanese tea while taking in the peaceful surroundings of the temple. Another highlight was the Zen garden experience. We were able to try arranging and smoothing the gravel in the Japanese garden ourselves. It was a simple activity, but it was surprisingly calming and made us appreciate how much care and attention goes into maintaining a traditional Zen garden. Spending time in the garden and actually taking part in the process made the experience feel much more personal than simply looking at a garden from a distance. There were also guests from England who were visiting Japan for their honeymoon, which made the experience even more memorable. It was nice to share such a unique Japanese cultural experience with people who had come to Kyoto for such a special occasion. Because it was an exclusive private experience, everything felt relaxed and unhurried. We could enjoy the temple, the Zen garden, the tea, and the time with the Maiko without being surrounded by large crowds. I highly recommend this experience to anyone visiting Kyoto who wants to discover Zen, traditional Japanese temples, beautiful Japanese gardens, and authentic Japanese culture in a more personal and meaningful way. It was definitely one of the most unique experiences of our time in Kyoto.

Breathtaking experience

We had a really breathtaking experience meeting Maiko-san. Is the first time I’m able to participate in some Q&A and also take pictures freely, is something I’m going to treasure in the future, as a really unique experience . Those things make the whole experience completely worth it. Plus, the zen garden experience was relaxing and I’m happy to have participated in. A big shout out to the guide Momo, she’s really knowledgeable and easy to talk, it made the experience way better.

A not-to-miss tour in Japan especially in Kyoto

It was such a mesmerising experience to learn more about maiko and geiko culture in Japan—an esteemed tradition that perfectly embodies the beauty of contemporary Japan, with roots in the Tokugawa era. It was also astonishing to see the country’s relentless commitment to preserving this eclectic culture. The experience begins with a tour of a garden that is rarely open to the general public. There, we learned myths associated with the garden’s design and the influence of Buddhism. We were then invited to a short session to practice “mindfulness,” guided within this architectural, cultural, and historical setting. Next comes the maiko experience—a breathtaking showcase of their sophisticated attire, along with a brief introduction to their history. This is followed by delicate dances accompanied by traditional Japanese music, creating a truly memorable and aesthetically rich celebration. I would also like to express my gratitude to the staff—so friendly and helpful throughout the tour. In particular, I appreciated how warmly they welcomed guests who arrived earlier than the reception session and helped them settle in comfortably. Overall, this is a truly marvellous experience, offering excellent value for money. It surely caters to visitors who are eager to explore Japanese traditional culture.

“Staff-only” view

The experience was great. The temple is normally closed for public, so you can get a “staff-only” view. And Maiko was very young and cute, can answer your questions as she can.

Operator response

Thank you for your kind feedback! We are so glad you enjoyed the private temple access and the time with our Maiko. We look forward to seeing you again on another tour.

Food is good

The place is beautiful, calm, and very different from the other temples. The guides were incredibly nice and it’s helps that they speak English. This experience helped me to learn more about the gueisha/grilo culture and dismistify my previous knowledge. Food is good
