Fantastic excursion. Everything was explained wonderfully and we had a super nice tour guide. Because we were making good time, we even got an extra sightseeing tour through Akureyri 👍👍

This German-speaking small group tour leads from the port in Akureyri to the Goðafoss waterfall and the volcanic lake Mývatn. The tour starts along the fjord and overlooks the town of Akureyri via the Vikurskarð mountain pass to the beautiful Góðafoss waterfall. From there, the journey continues across two plateaus to Lake Mývatn, where we make several stops. You will experience pseudo-craters, bizarre lava formations, boiling mud springs, craters and the warm-water-filled Gjrotagjá cave known from the Games of Thrones series. The duration of the tour is about 8 hours; the departure times are adapted to the berth times of the cruise ships.

German-speaking Shore Excursion to Góðafoss & Mývatn from Akureyri in Small Group
Mývatn is Iceland's fourth largest lake and surrounded by various natural wonders. The area of Mývatn is characterized by volcanism, there are bizarre lava formations, craters and hot springs. Their first stop here are the pseudo-craters in Skútustagigar. These unusual geological formations were formed 2300 years ago when hot lava flowed over damp ground, then the water evaporated abruptly and hurled up the lava.
Next, head to Dimmuborgir (or Dark Castles), where you can walk amid some of Iceland's most fascinating lava formations. According to legend, the 13 Icelandic Santa Clauses also live in Dimmuborgir.
Grjotagjá, considered the home of an outlaw in the 18th century, was used as a local hot spring until the 1970s. Although it is too warm to bathe after the Krafla eruptions, the caves are very popular due to the deep blue color of the water and its mystical surroundings, especially since they became one of the filming locations of the series Game of Thrones.
To get to the colourful Solfatars of Hverarönd, cross the Námaskarð mountain pass. Here you can experience the power of nature amid sulphurous cracks in the cracked earth, steaming fumaroles and bubbling mud pools.
The last volcanic eruption was in the Krafla area in 1984/85. There is a large geothermal power plant here and the crater lake Víti impresses with its turquoise water.

We were also very lucky with the weather (brilliant sunshine), which made the wonderful trip even better. We learned a lot about Iceland from Ari. Great trip, the...
We only did not stop at the blue Viti Lake with the power plant. Instead, we took a lunch break in a tiny village where there was only a gas station-sized supermarket and a fish and chips shop. That was unnecessary. Our tour guide was very nice and informed us in excellent German. Our tour guide was very nice and informed us in excellent German. I would repeat the excursion at any time.
