A confusing mess of artifacts with no story to tell.
I've been to movie and film museums around the world and this one in my hometown of Hollywood just completely misses the mark. The museum can't seem to tell a story about movies, about the origin of movies, or about moviemaking. Worst of all, the Academy Museum doesn't even inspire me to see a movie!

Good all around movie displays
Very good museum. Have various exhibits so can enjoy one if your not a fan of the other. Liked the Marilyn Monroe and Bong Joon Ho especially. Worth going.

Highly anticipated and a little disappointing
We spent about 4 hours here on a Saturday. The building is beautiful and easy to get around. The line was long to get in even though we had purchased tickets in advance, but it did not take long to get through. We would have been able to see everything except that the Horror exhibit had just opened that day and there was a line that started on floor 2 and went up to the 4th floor where the exhibit was. We stood in that line for 1 hour. It was orderly and regulated by employees, but I think it may have been unnecessary because once we entered there was another long line and that was for the slasher room within the exhibit. No other rooms within the exhibit had a line at all. We were not interested in the slasher area and just skipped it. We really enjoyed all of the exhibits, but we were disappointed in the lack of the history of the Oscars that we had expected to find here.

Study the map & save steps
The map for getting around can be a bit confusing … wish we had studied it more carefully rather than plunging ahead. There’s a LOT of walking!

A Gem of a Museum
Loved this museum and all the displays. We were fortunate to have the tour of the Marilyn Monroe exhibit - excellent. There's definitely something for everyone here. So much history. Would definitely go again.

Disappointing
Again, this was not what we expected at all. It was interesting. And we enjoyed it. This has been on husband's Bucket List for quite some time. But it was smaller and we expected a much broader representation of the Motion Picture Industry.
Parking (of course, it is LA) is a real challenge

Could and should have been better
Overall we felt this was not time or money well spent and we left disappointed. A little context, the museum is largely made up of 3 floors of exhibits / exhibition material - that is Level 2, Level 3 and Level 4. However, when we visited, Level 4 was closed as they were redoing it from 27 July to 26 Sept 2026 and that probably says it all really. What an awful time to redo a whole floor - the height of summer - it’s got to be the period you expect to get the most footfall. On the other 2 floors - there was largely niche stuff to see - dominated by old pre-1980’s content. But the 1980’s through to current day was badly under represented. Horrendous really - so many great movies and fantastic content that could have been covered. Level 5 had a terrace, that was the highlight - a great view.. Also, on the plus side - staff were helpful… AND…the air conditioning was amazing (it was 38c outside).

Hollywoodland and Marilyn Monroe
Highlights were Hollywoodland and Marilyn Monroe. The Barbie exhibitions was okay but a full scale Barbie set would have been cool to see. I was unfamiliar with Bong Joon Ho and Ponyo and these were less appealing. The price was on point for what was on display. I went outside to the Dolby Family Terrace to see the Hollywood sign (as suggested on entry) but it is so far away you almost need binoculars. Overall, it is worth a visit and at least does not cost too much.

A great LA -and Film story
If you live movies, this is the place. It had the history, the glamour, the stories and the tech. I really enjoyed the costumes and seeing actual Oscars. I wish there would have been more costumes and relics from the films - there was a lot of reading and information, which was nice, but few artifacts from famous films - I would have liked to have seen more. I am also a fan of films about war experiences and there was nothing on that genre - at all. Other than those areas, I have no regrets and will return in the future.
