Hurghada is a Red Sea resort city on the Egyptian mainland, stretched along about 40 km of coast, where most visitors split their week between boat days on the reefs and one long trip to the pharaonic sites. The choices that matter are which of Luxor or Cairo deserves your one big day out, which boat trip to book first, and which resort area to sleep in. This guide checks the 2026 visa rules, ticket prices and safety advice against official sources and compares typical prices across 1,440 bookable tours.

Hurghada at a glance

Hurghada is the capital of Egypt's Red Sea Governorate, a city of about 214,000 people that runs for roughly 40 km between the sea and the Red Sea Mountains. It began as a fishing settlement, became a town officially in 1905 and grew into one of Egypt's busiest resort areas, with more than 9 million visitors a year. Beyond the city itself, the name covers a chain of resort towns: El Gouna to the north, and Sahl Hasheesh, Makadi Bay and Soma Bay to the south.

Do you need a visa for Hurghada?

Verdict: Yes. The free entry stamp you may have read about applies only to arrivals at Sharm El Sheikh airport, and Hurghada is treated as a mainland airport. Bring USD 30 in clean notes for the visa on arrival, or buy an e-visa online before you fly and skip the kiosk queue.

Passports need at least six months' validity after arrival and one blank page. You may bring up to EGP 5,000 in Egyptian cash into or out of the country, and foreign currency worth more than USD 10,000 must be declared. These rules are the UK government's description; visa eligibility depends on nationality, so check your own government's page as well.

Some older pages still quote a USD 25 visa or say Hurghada visitors get the free Sinai stamp. Both are wrong in 2026.

Luxor or Cairo: which day trip from Hurghada is worth it?

Verdict: If you do one, do Luxor. It is about 289 km away, under four hours each way by road, so you get a real day among the temples and tombs rather than a day in a vehicle. Go to Cairo only if the pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum are the reason you came to Egypt, and then fly: by road Cairo is about 450 km and nearly five hours each way.

A Luxor day costs about EGP 2,050 in tickets if you include Tutankhamun Must do

The Valley of the Kings costs EGP 750 for a foreign adult (students EGP 375) and is open daily 06:00–17:00. A July 2026 visitor guide reports that the general ticket covers three of the tombs open that day, that Tutankhamun's tomb needs an extra EGP 700 ticket, Seti I's tomb EGP 2,000, and that a short tram ride costs EGP 20. Karnak's inclusive ticket, covering the temple and its Open Museum, is EGP 600. Check whether your tour price includes entry: listings differ.

Ticket offices at the Luxor sites are reported to require a card, so do not count on paying entry in Egyptian pounds; keep cash for tips and small purchases. The Valley of the Kings holds at least 63 tombs cut between about 1539 and 1075 BC and is part of the UNESCO site of Ancient Thebes; Howard Carter found Tutankhamun's tomb there on 4 November 1922.

The Luxor balloon is a sunrise flight, and weather can cancel it Worth it

Balloons over Luxor fly at sunrise above the West Bank. The worst accident, on 26 February 2013, killed 19 people when a fuel leak started a fire, and a 2018 crash in high winds killed one tourist; after crashes, flights were suspended and take-offs moved to a dedicated airfield. The UK government notes that some UK operators stopped selling balloon flights over concerns about safety verification. Flights are cancelled in strong wind, as on 13 March 2026. If you want the balloon, an overnight trip in Luxor is far more comfortable than leaving Hurghada around midnight.

Cairo in a day works only by plane, and the museum ticket is timed Worth it

Flights from Hurghada to Cairo take about an hour to an hour and a half; buses take five to seven hours each way. The Giza Plateau ticket is EGP 700 for a foreign adult and does not include entry into the pyramids. The Grand Egyptian Museum, which now holds Tutankhamun's gold mask and more than 5,300 objects from his tomb, sells tickets for a fixed date and entry slot, non-refundable, only through its official site; foreign entry rises from USD 30 to USD 35 on 1 November 2026.

Orange Bay, Dolphin House or a private speedboat: which boat trip should you book?

Verdict: Book a Giftun island trip with a stop at Orange Bay first: it gives you snorkelling and a white-sand beach in one day at a low price. Add Dolphin House only if seeing wild dolphins is a priority, and accept that they may not show up. A private speedboat costs several times more but is the better choice for families or groups who want to avoid crowded boats.

TripHow it worksBest forTypical tour price
Orange Bay / Giftun islandFull day on a shared boat with snorkel stops and beach time on GiftunFirst boat day, beach lovers$24
Dolphin House (Shaab El Erg)Full day to a reef where wild dolphins rest; snorkel if they are presentDolphin seekers$23
Private speedboatOften 4 hours, your own route (dolphins, islands, reefs)Families and groups$135
Semi-submarine or glass-bottom boatShort trip, coral seen through windowsNon-swimmers and small children$30

Most of Hurghada's reefs lie offshore, so snorkelling here usually means a boat; from the beach you can reach some reef life about 10 m out at best, and town beaches charge entry. The Giftun group is two islands, Big Giftun nearer the city and Little Giftun further east, and Orange Bay is on Giftun. El Mahmya, a beach camp on Giftun, is about 45 minutes by boat.

Expect a cash park fee on Giftun trips Worth it

Tour sellers list a Giftun Island National Park admission of about USD 5 per person, often left out of the trip price and collected in cash; other guides quote EUR 5–10 or a few hundred Egyptian pounds. No official fee schedule was found, so ask whether the fee is included and carry small notes.

Dolphin House depends on the dolphins Worth it

The dolphins at Shaab El Erg are wild, not fed or trained, and operators themselves say a sighting cannot be guaranteed. A code of conduct for boats, drawn up by the conservation group HEPCA and adopted in Red Sea Governorate rules, tells captains to keep their distance, slow down and never chase or surround the animals. A boat that races towards a pod is breaking those rules.

When is the best time to visit Hurghada?

Rain hardly matters: Hurghada averages about 8 mm a year. What changes through the year is heat and sea temperature. Average highs run from about 22 °C in January to 37.5 °C in August, and the sea from about 21 °C in February and March to 28 °C in August.

October–November and March–May are the best months for most people

In October the sea is still around 26 °C with highs near 32 °C; November brings highs of about 28 °C and water around 25 °C. Spring has comfortable air (26–34 °C highs) but cooler water, about 21–24 °C, so snorkellers may want a shorty wetsuit in March. These are also the best months for a long Luxor day, when the temples are not baking.

June to September is for heat-tolerant beach and dive holidays

Average highs sit at 35–37.5 °C, nights stay around 26–28 °C, and the recorded maximum is 47 °C. The sea is at its warmest, so boat days are pleasant, but a Luxor or Cairo trip in these months means walking archaeological sites in fierce heat: start early and carry water.

December to February is mild, with cool nights and cooler water

Highs of 22–24 °C suit sightseeing, but nights drop to about 12–13 °C, the north-easterly Shamal wind can make days feel cold, and the sea falls to 21–23 °C. Most people still swim, but many find a wetsuit useful for snorkelling.

Inside Hurghada most visitors move by hotel shuttle, taxi or excursion pick-up. Uber and Careem work in the city, though availability varies, especially at the airport and the bus station. Street taxis are negotiated, so settle the total price before getting in; local microbuses run fixed routes for a small flat fare.

Do not drive yourself outside the cities and resorts at night: the UK government warns that road accidents are common and road conditions poor. If you organise Luxor independently, a driver or the Go Bus is a safer choice than a rental car.

What are the best things to do in Hurghada?

Spend a day on the Giftun islands Must do

The classic first excursion: a shared boat leaves the marina in the morning, stops at reefs for snorkelling and spends time on the beach at Orange Bay. Trips are cheap, typically $24, and many include lunch on board. See which boat trip to choose for Dolphin House and speedboats.

Take one long day trip to Luxor Must do

Luxor is the strongest reason to leave the coast: the Valley of the Kings and Karnak in one day, about 3 h 45 min each way. Typical tours cost $180; see Luxor or Cairo for ticket prices and the balloon question.

Dive or try diving for the first time Must do

Diving from Hurghada is cheap by European standards, and dive days are among the best-rated tours in our catalogue. A day with two boat dives typically costs $42; the PADI Open Water course costs about $300. Dive sites include the El Mina wreck, Abu Ramada and Fanadir. The UK government warns that standards of dive boats vary considerably, so choose an established centre and stay within your insurance depth limit.

Spend an evening in the desert under the stars Must do

The calmer desert option: a 4x4 ride into the desert behind the city, a camel ride, a Bedouin-style dinner and stargazing, typically $35. It suits families and anyone who does not want to drive a quad.

Mountains of the Eastern Desert. Photo: michiel1972, CC BY-SA 3.0

Ride a quad bike, but choose the operator with care Worth it

Quad safaris are among the most common excursions here: a plain quad ride typically costs $30, and 'super safaris' combining quad, buggy, jeep, camel and dinner about $25. The UK government reports serious quad accidents involving British visitors in resort areas and advises always wearing a helmet; a cheap operator without helmets is the one to walk away from.

Walk the marina and El Dahar in the evening Worth it

Hurghada has few sights of its own, and the best of them are close together. The marina is lined with restaurants and is where many boats leave from; El Mina Mosque, with two 40 m minarets, is the largest in the governorate; and El Dahar, north of the centre, is the oldest and most Egyptian part of town. Haggling is expected in the souk.

See the Hurghada Museum Worth it

The first antiquities museum in the Red Sea Governorate shows 2,000 objects on the theme of beauty in Egypt, from the pharaonic period to modern times. Foreign adults pay EGP 300 (students EGP 150), and it opens in two sessions, 10:00–13:00 and 17:00–23:00, so it fits an evening after a beach day. It is a useful taster if you will not reach Luxor or Cairo.

Ride a horse along the beach Worth it

Short rides on the beach and into the desert, often with a chance to swim with the horse, are a popular cheaper excursion at typically $25. Morning and sunset slots avoid the worst heat.

Spend a day in El Gouna Worth it

El Gouna, about 20 km north, is a planned resort town built from 1990 on 20 islands linked by lagoons, with the Abu Tig Marina and a downtown area. It is worth half a day for lunch and a walk by the lagoons even if you stay elsewhere.

Worth skipping

  • Cairo by bus in a day (from $18): more than ten hours on the road for a few hours at the pyramids. Fly, or skip Cairo.
  • Semi-submarine trips ($30) if you can swim: a snorkel stop shows the reef better. After the Sindbad submarine sank off Hurghada in March 2025, killing six, ask who operates the vessel before booking.
  • Luxor balloon on a same-day trip from Hurghada: you leave in the middle of the night and tour the temples exhausted. Stay a night in Luxor if you want the flight.
  • Hotel 'VIP' hammam packages ($30) if your hotel spa is decent: they are add-ons, not a reason to leave the resort.

How many days do you need in Hurghada?

Most packages run for a week, and that is the right length: it leaves room for two or three sea days, one desert evening, one long day trip and time to rest after it. With fewer than five days, choose between Luxor and the islands rather than rushing both.

Where should you stay in Hurghada?

Verdict: Stay in Sekalla or near the marina if you want to walk to restaurants and do most trips from town; choose El Gouna for a car-free resort town with lagoons; pick Sahl Hasheesh or Makadi Bay for a quieter beach holiday and accept longer pick-ups for excursions.

If you stay in Makadi, Soma Bay or El Gouna, check that pick-up from your resort is included before booking: many listings name the resorts they collect from, and the drive adds time to every excursion.

Is Hurghada safe? Rules, safety and money

The UK Foreign Office does not advise against travel to Hurghada or the mainland Red Sea resorts, and its warnings about parts of the Western Desert exclude Luxor and the Valley of the Kings. In March 2026 the US rated Egypt as a whole at Level 2, 'exercise increased caution'. Serious attacks on tourists have happened, for example a stabbing at two beach hotels in July 2017, but the risks visitors meet most often are on the water, on quads and with touts.

  • Boats and submarines: standards vary considerably. On 27 March 2025 the tourist submarine Sindbad sank about 1 km off Hurghada and six passengers died, although it was licensed. Choose established operators and ask for a safety briefing.
  • Sea rescue can cost more than USD 4,000 an hour and starts only once payment is guaranteed: make sure your insurance covers water sports and diving.
  • Sharks: attacks are rare, but a tiger shark killed a man near Hurghada in June 2023, and two tourists were killed in 2022. Swim in designated zones and follow beach closures.
  • Quad bikes: serious accidents happen; always wear a helmet.
  • Personal safety: the UK government says many reported sexual assaults happened in Red Sea resorts, often by hotel or excursion staff. Do not let staff into your room when alone.
  • Stomach illness is common in the heat; be careful with food hygiene, especially buffets.
  • Touts for taxis and trips are persistent; book through your hotel or a reputable operator and report crime to the tourist police on 126.

Alcohol, dress and photography rules

Alcohol is legal only in licensed bars and restaurants, private homes and tourist resorts; drinking in the street can lead to arrest. Dress modestly in mosques, markets and away from the beach. Drones need prior Ministry of Defence permission, photographing military sites is illegal, and you should ask before photographing people and never photograph children. Same-sex relationships are not explicitly illegal, but LGBT+ people have been prosecuted under 'debauchery' laws.

Money and tipping

Restaurants often add a 10–12% service charge that may not reach staff, so a small cash tip on top is normal; tips for guides and drivers on day trips are customary, and US dollars are often welcome for larger tips. Bargain in the souk, where opening prices are well above the final price. Keep small dollar notes for park fees and Egyptian pounds for taxis and tips, and a card for Luxor and Cairo ticket offices.

What mistakes do travellers regret in Hurghada?

  1. Arriving without USD 30 in cash. Hurghada has no free entry stamp; the visa on arrival is cash only. Or buy the e-visa before you fly.
  2. Booking Cairo by bus as a day trip. More than ten hours on the road for a short visit. Fly, or choose Luxor instead.
  3. Assuming Luxor tour prices include entry. Valley of the Kings, Tutankhamun and Karnak alone add about EGP 2,050 per adult, and ticket offices are reported to want a card.
  4. Turning up at the Grand Egyptian Museum without a timed ticket. Tickets are for a fixed slot and sold through the official site.
  5. Choosing the cheapest quad or boat operator. Safety standards vary considerably; helmets and briefings are not optional.
  6. Expecting to snorkel straight off the hotel beach. Most reefs are offshore; plan at least one boat day.
  7. Forgetting the cash park fee on Giftun trips. Carry small notes in case it is not included.
  8. Planning a winter swim without a wetsuit. The sea drops to about 21 °C in February and March, and the Shamal wind makes it feel colder.

Hurghada FAQ

Do I need a visa for Hurghada?

Yes. The free entry stamp applies only at Sharm El Sheikh airport. At Hurghada you buy a visa on arrival for USD 30, cash only, valid for up to 30 days, or an e-visa online before travel, valid for up to three months.

Is Hurghada safe in 2026?

The UK Foreign Office does not advise against travel to Hurghada, and the US rated Egypt at Level 2 in March 2026. The common risks are boats and dive operators of uneven standard, quad bike accidents, touts and stomach illness. Choose established operators and check that your insurance covers water sports.

When is the best time to visit Hurghada?

October–November and March–May. Highs are 26–34 °C and the sea 21–26 °C. June to September is very hot, with highs of 36–37.5 °C, and December to February has cool nights and a sea of 21–23 °C.

Is the sea warm enough to swim in winter?

Most visitors still swim, but the sea falls to about 21–23 °C from December to March and the north-easterly Shamal wind can make it feel colder. A shorty wetsuit makes long snorkel stops more comfortable.

Is a Luxor day trip from Hurghada worth it?

Yes, it is the best long day trip from Hurghada. Luxor is about 289 km away, under four hours each way. Budget for entry: the Valley of the Kings is EGP 750, Karnak EGP 600 and Tutankhamun's tomb a reported extra EGP 700.

Should I fly or take the bus to Cairo from Hurghada?

Fly if you are going for the day. The flight takes about an hour to an hour and a half, while buses take five to seven hours each way over about 450 km. By road, a day trip leaves only a few hours for Giza and the museum.

Orange Bay or Dolphin House: which boat trip is better?

Orange Bay on Giftun is the better first trip: snorkelling plus a beach, at a low price. Dolphin House is for people who specifically want to see wild dolphins, and sightings are never guaranteed.

Are there sharks in Hurghada?

Yes, but attacks are rare. A tiger shark killed a man near Hurghada in June 2023, after which a 74 km stretch of coast was closed for several days, and two tourists were killed in 2022. Swim in designated areas and respect any closures.

Do Uber and Careem work in Hurghada?

Yes, both operate in the city, but availability varies, especially at the airport and bus station. With a street taxi, agree the full fare before getting in.

How much should I tip in Hurghada?

Restaurants often add a 10–12% service charge that may not reach staff, so leave a small extra cash tip. Tips for guides and drivers on day trips are customary, and US dollars are often welcome for larger amounts.
