Fifteen Vietnamese destinations in one place: how the north, centre and south differ as trips and as weather, what Ha Long Bay really involves, and what a day out costs.
In the order Viator’s own catalogue puts them — most-booked first, not alphabetical.
Grouped by region using Viator’s own map of the country. The first block is the places it files directly under Vietnam.
From our own price index — 2,400 tours across 50 cities, collected August 2026. Medians, not averages: a couple of multi-day packages drag an average into fiction.

A day trip from Hanoi is roughly eight hours of travel for four on the water. The overnight cruise is what people remember, and the difference between a cheap one and a good one is mostly how crowded the anchorage is. This is a place to spend a little more rather than a little less.
Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City is a two-hour flight or a thirty-hour train. A first trip is normally two or three bases — north, centre, south — joined by cheap internal flights, not a drive.
The north has a cool, grey winter and a hot wet summer. The centre floods around October and November. The south is dry from November to April. A trip covering all three will meet three different climates, and no month is good everywhere.
Walk slowly and predictably and the scooters flow around you; stopping suddenly is what causes the accidents. Every walking tour in Hanoi begins with this and none of them are joking.
The dong runs into hundreds of thousands and several notes look alike. Cards work in hotels and larger restaurants and very little else outside the big cities. Count change in daylight and keep the small notes accessible.
Vietnam extended its e-visa validity considerably and widened the visa-free list in recent years. What applies to you depends on your passport and the year, so check an official source — a lot of the advice online predates the change.
