The medinas are built to disorient
Fes el Bali has thousands of lanes, no cars and no logic a map will help with. Getting lost is part of it; being led is the risk. Official guides carry a badge and a licence number — anyone who attaches themselves to you in the street and insists the way ahead is closed is not one.
The Sahara is two or three days, not one
Merzouga, where the big dunes are, is nine to ten hours by road from Marrakech. Every genuine desert trip is an overnight — usually two nights, via the Dades or Todra gorges. Anything sold as a day trip to the desert goes to a stony plain much closer.
Haggling is the normal transaction
The first price in a souk is an opening position, not an insult or a fixed rate. Naming a figure well below it and being willing to walk away is the expected behaviour on both sides. Fixed-price cooperatives exist if you would rather not.
Most mosques are closed to non-Muslims
The Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca is the significant exception and runs proper guided tours. Elsewhere you see the exteriors and the minarets. Medersas — the old Quranic schools in Fes and Marrakech — are open and are the better architecture anyway.
Ramadan reshapes the day
Many restaurants close during daylight and the cities come alive after sunset. It moves about eleven days earlier each year, so check where it falls against your dates. Tours run throughout; the rhythm of everything else changes.
Marrakech is well below the world average
Its median tour is €39 against a global median of €60. The dirham is also a closed currency — you cannot readily obtain it before arriving or take it out — so plan to change or withdraw on the ground.

How many days do you need in Morocco?
A week for Marrakech with the Atlas mountains and Essaouira. Ten days to add a proper desert trip to Merzouga and come back through Fes. The country rewards fewer places and longer stays — the driving days are long.

When is the best time to visit?
March to May and September to November. Summer in Marrakech, Fes and the desert is genuinely punishing; winter is mild by day, cold at night and very quiet. The coast at Essaouira and Agadir works all year.
Can you visit the Sahara from Marrakech?
Yes, as a two or three-day trip. Three days is the comfortable version: Ait Benhaddou and the gorges on the way, a night in a desert camp at Merzouga, and the long drive back. Two days means roughly twenty hours in a vehicle for one sunset.
Is Morocco suitable for solo or female travellers?
Large numbers visit every year without incident, though attention and persistent approaches in the medinas are common and tiring. Modest dress, a firm and unapologetic no, and a licensed guide for the first day in a new medina all help considerably.
