Akbar rebuilt Lahore Fort in brick from 1566 and every Mughal after him added to it: Jahangir's quadrangle, Shah Jahan's Sheesh Mahal lined with thousands of mirror fragments, Aurangzeb's Alamgiri Gate facing the mosque. Below it the Walled City still runs on its Mughal street plan, and the restored Royal Trail from Delhi Gate is the best way in.

What is there to see at Lahore Fort?
The Sheesh Mahal or Palace of Mirrors, the Naulakha Pavilion, the Diwan-e-Aam audience hall, the Elephant Path and the 450-metre Picture Wall of glazed tile mosaics — the largest of its kind in the world. The fort has been UNESCO-listed since 1981.
Is the Walled City of Lahore safe to walk?
Yes, and it is one of the friendliest places in the country to walk — though it is dense, unsigned and easy to get lost in, which is why almost everyone goes with a guide. The Shahi Guzargah, the restored Royal Trail from Delhi Gate, is the main route.
How many gates does the Walled City have?
Thirteen were built under the Mughals; six survive, including Delhi Gate, Bhati Gate and Roshnai Gate. Heritage tours usually start at Delhi Gate and work west through the bazaars.
