The Mughal emperor Shah Jahan, completed in 1642 and laid out on three terraces in the Persian charbagh tradition. The same emperor built the Taj Mahal; the gardens were his idea of a Kashmir valley brought to the Punjab plain.
How long do you need at the Shalimar Gardens?
An hour is enough to walk the three terraces and the main water channel. Tours usually allow that before continuing to the Wagah border, which is another twenty minutes east.
