Tokyo Calligraphy Workshop Craft Your Own Art in Asakusa

Kiyo is an excellent teacher and her patience was invaluable as we learned Japanese characters for the first time. She allowed extra time for us and applauded when we did well, explaining the culture, philosophy and brushstrokes.

I had an amazing calligraphy lesson! It was incredibly interesting, informative, and a lot of fun. Everything was explained clearly in English, so it was very easy to follow along and start writing even as a complete beginner. A special thank you to Mei — she was absolutely wonderful! So friendly, kind, and patient. She made me feel comfortable from the very beginning, guided me through every step, and helped me create something I was really happy with. Such a great experience and definitely one of the highlights of my time in Japan. Highly recommended! ❤️

I booked a place on the workshop at the last minute and I’m so glad I did. The workshop leader, Yoshi, was brilliant! She gave us a short but really clear introduction to the three scripts and the practice of calligraphy then set us off on practice of our own. She was a really supportive teacher giving all 3 of us in the class lots of individualised help and attention. And to cap it all, we each ended up with our own works of calligraphic art. Highly recommended!!

We had an amazing relaxing time with Mei. If you need some peace away from crazy Tokyo then come here. She has so much knowledge of Japanese calligraphy and is great at explaining and guiding you. After an hour of practicing our chosen words we got to make our final piece on a scroll. Mei designed our name in Japanese characters so we could add it to our final piece. 10/10 would recommend

It's a wonderful experience. The guide Kiyo is very charming and gentel. She expresses the art of the calligraphy and I felt this activity like a peacefull place.

The class was a great work by Kyo and who masterfully presented not only a subject but knowledge of Japanese history. There was so much information and skill. Both my wife and I were very happy with this course.

One of the most meaningful experiences of our family trip to Japan. Our calligraphy class with Mei was so much more than learning how to write beautiful characters. She thoughtfully introduced us to the history, philosophy, and cultural significance behind Japanese calligraphy, making the experience both educational and deeply personal. The class struck a perfect balance between meditation and creativity. Slowing down, focusing on each brushstroke, and embracing the process was incredibly calming—a wonderful contrast to the energy of Tokyo. Mei was patient, warm, and encouraging with every member of our family, making both adults and children feel comfortable regardless of artistic ability. By the end of the session, we left not only with beautiful keepsakes but also with a greater appreciation for Japanese culture and the mindfulness that calligraphy embodies. If you’re looking for an authentic cultural experience that is peaceful, inspiring, and memorable, I can’t recommend this class with Mei highly enough. It will remain one of the highlights of our time in Japan.
