Description
Experience this high-altitude ecosystem at 3800 meters of altitude filled with unique fauna and flora found nowhere else outside the Andes. A visit to a nature reserve in the Páramo of Sumapaz will make you feel like you have stepped onto another planet.
This trek is of high difficulty. It requires that you are in good physical condition due to the low air pressure present above 3500 m.a.s.l. The trails are uneven, steep and muddy most of the time. The elevation gain for this trek is about 400 meters, starting at 3400 meters and reaching 3800 m.a.s.l. Keep in mind that each hour you spend hiking at high altitudes is the equivalent effort of two hours at sea level.
Note: This is not a private tour but a GROUP tour and you COULD join other travelers at any moment during the tour

Peace and beauty in the Colombian páramo
We went on this hike eager to explore the páramo and had an unforgettable experience with the luck that it did not rain, even though it was the rainy season. The place is beautiful and sacred, with ochre colors that reconnect you with nature, moments of silence and absolute peace, drinking pure mountain water and listening to the songs of many birds. You can also feel the mist passing in front of you with the pure air that is generated there, and see a lot of flora like the famous frailejones and many flowers, lichens, and mosses.
The guides are very good, they know a lot and are patient: they picked us up and returned us to our hotel, they kindly offered us arepas with aguapanela, and they waited for us when one of the participants was taking photos non-stop. This hike is suitable if you have the necessary clothing and condition: if you cannot do a medium trek with the possibility of rain and cold, or if you are more interested in seeing the fauna of the páramo (it is not seen here as in other parks), ask guide Andrés for advice, as he can recommend another equally impressive experience that is more suitable for your age, condition, or interests.

It's a very nice experience! Being able to be, be and walk in the middle of silence is something that can be experienced in the Sumapaz

Hiking without Water for Three Hours
The driver was right on time, but the communication wasn't clear. I asked him to stop and buy water, but he insisted that there will be some water at the destination. When we got there, the tour guide gave me some sweet tea and a piece of bread. Thisis bad because I went hiking for three hours without any water. He didn't have any water in the car either. I would recommend that there should be some water for hikers.
Operator response
Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We’re glad to hear the driver arrived on time, and we’re sorry that your experience did not fully meet expectations.
We would like to clarify a few important points for future travelers. Our tour description asks guests to come prepared with their own water and gear, specially for challenging hikes of this nature. Sumapaz is also known as a natural water factory that supplies drinking water to local communities with fresh spring water from creeks along the trail. This fresh water is alwasy available during the hike and we encourage travelers to enjoy it.
This reservation was made last minute and you agreed in advance to continue with a Spanish-speaking guide. While we always aim for clear communication, we understand that language differences can sometimes make this more challenging and we regret any confusion this may have caused. As a courtesy our team provided you with a snack and a warm drink upon arrival which was not included in the tour price you chose. After the hike, our host did provide you with a glass of water which you did not drink and instead purchased bottled water in the city.
We appreciate your suggestion regarding water availability and will continue working to better remind guests to come prepared for outdoor activities. Guest safety and comfort are always a priority for us! Thank you again for your feedback and we wish you safe travels.

Sumapaz
Diego was a knowledgeable and dedicated guide. The hike was challenging but definitely worth the time. The view was amazing and so different. Wish the break was longer to enjoy the scenery and have a coffee.
Operator response
Thank you for sharing your experience! The Sumapaz páramo is such a unique landscape, and we know what you mean — we could also stare out at those views forever! Diego is passionate about sharing the area’s wonders, and we’re glad the hike was both challenging and rewarding.

Surreal landscape with a passionate guide
Amazing time in some pretty surreal landscape. The guide (english speaking) was super knowledgeable about the flora and fauna of the area, and had a authentic passion for birds. So if you area a birdwatcher, that could be a bonus reason to book this tour.
Pretty cool out there. Do not forget water proof shoes, you will be upset! It's very muddy in places, I would even recommend higher ankle boots as I sunk a few inches in the mud at one point.

Great Hike! Great Tour Guide!
Our guide, Juan, was excellent--knowledgeable about the geography, geology, flora, fauna, history, etc., of the Sumapaz Paramo. We would do it again, but Juan has to be our guide!
Operator response
We will pass along the message to Juan Camilo and promise we have other great guides who can also deliver an amazing experience ;). Thanks for joining us in the páramo. It's definitely a unique trip worth taking and we are happy to hear you had a great time!

Great hike into the paramo!
Fantastic experience start to finish! Camilo and our driver were both very nice and punctual. We appreciated the English aspect of the tour which for 30 USD extra is 100% worth it. Great hike up to the paramo and learned a ton about the ecosystem. The drink and snack at the farmhouse was a nice addition too. They were very accommodating when my partner had to turn around due to illness.
Operator response
Thank you for your review. Safety is always our top priority and we want to make sure our guests feel well enough to complete the experience. We are glad you had a good time and hope you enjoyed the rest of your trip!

Great scenery and a worthwhile day trip
Just 2 of us on the tour. Friendly driver, beautiful scenery. The guy who walked us up the trail didn't talk much, if at all. That would've been the difference for 4 or 5 stars. The 2 of us on the tour spoke Spanish so there was really no reason for him not to talk to us.
