Originally built in wood by the Vikings, the magnificent cathedral was recast in stone by the Normans and renovated by whiskey money in the the 19th century.
Named after our famous patron saint who drove the snakes off the island, St. Patrick's Cathedral was superbly renovated by the Guinness family (Sir Benjamin lee Guinness) in the 1860s.
Home the Chester Beatty Library, this beautiful and secluded garden is where the Vikings moored their Long Boats when they arrived in Dublin in the 9th century.
The centre of British government in Ireland for 700 years, Dublin Castle is a stunning mixture of medieval, Georgian, Gothic and modern architecture.
Beside City Hall and outside the front gate of the castle we explain the significance of our national flag: peace between Catholic and Protestant, North and South.
One of the oldest parts of the city and now famous for the lively pubs and nightlife, we describe how it was laid out during the Tudor conquest of Ireland.
Having crossed the river Liffey from the south to the north, we can take in the view of the city from the east where the Celts built their settlement 2,100 years ago to the west where the Americans inspired the Silicon Docks 21 years ago.
We cross back to the south over the iconic Ha'Penny Bridge. Originally, named after the Duke of Wellington we can thank Harland & Wolff that the bridge no longer shakes when you walk over it!
Dublin is a city of contrasts, typified by Crown Alley with Merchant's Arch at one end and Sam Stephenson's brutalist behemoth, Stephenson Tower, at the other.
With some of the most beautiful buildings (banks and parliament) in the city, College Green was the centre of government and finance in a city that considered itself to be the 02nd city of the empire.
No tour of Dublin is complete without saying hello to our favourite daughter of Dublin, Molly Malone!
We conclude our exploration of our beloved old city outside the magnificent Trinity College, home to the famous Book of Kells exhibition.

Went with Rob .. Great guide .. Yellow umbrella tours.. Rob was very clear, knowledgeable , polite and down to earth..... Very enjoyable and please pay him!!!!
We thoroughly enjoyed our tour. Our guide was charismatic and hugely knowledgeable, and gave us just the right amount of personal opinion. We learnt so much! Terrific way to kick start our time in Dublin.
Peter was a wonderful host. He offered great insight into Irelands history and current day implications. Highly recommend.
Rob was a great tour guide! Very funny and kept the tour moving well. Great way to get oriented to the city and see the sights. Would recommend!
Our guide was Sebas and we were amazed by his professional and human quality. Thanks to him we learned a lot about the history of Ireland and he recommended many places to eat. Professionals like him make you want to book routes and tours with this company. Thank you very much, Sebas.
Jack Redmond led our 2.5 hour walking tour of Dublin today. He kept it interesting and personal. We followed his suggestions afterwards and walked through Trinity College and took the train to see the cliffs of Howth. It was a 13mile day and we were back before our cruise left. Jack’s knowledge made the most of our day in port.
SUMMARY - great tour! Definitely would recommend and glad we did it early on our second day. Did the paid tour which was great value. MEETING - Took us a little while to find the exact spot, but Dublin is so small that you can walk to the meetup point pretty much from any central location or hotel in Dublin. We booked a paid for small group tour, and it turned out it was just us and Peter the owner/operator of Yellow Umbrella Tours- TOUR - It was a couple of hours, with Peter walking us around various locations and giving us a lot of background and history that I was completely unaware of, even having been born and brought up in England before moving the the US. I really appreciated that added context to all the various places, it made it so much more interesting than just looking at a building or point of interest, and Peter was not only very knowledgeable, but because it was a small group tour we were able to interact and ask additional questions without being too much of a pain. Finished outside Trinity and it turned out that Peter was a former student (for Americans reading this, Trinity is like Ireland's Harvard or Yale) - as Peter said wryly, you'll always know a Trinity man - because they'll tell you they are! Funny dude :-) COST/MISC - My wife booked it and we normally do free walking tours, but she picked out this paid one for maybe 17EUR (?), and tbh it was well worth it and I'd do the paid one by preference over the free ones because, as someone who's hearing is a bit bad, it was great to be able to hear everything he was saying, to ask to repeat if I didn't hear, or to ask for extra details if we wanted. So yeah I think we got lucky being the only ones on the tour, but I would definitely recommend the company, Peter himself, and the very reasonable price of the tour. Good job and thanks again Peter!
We had a great tour with Peter. He was knowledgeable and informative about Dublin and Irish history. Was a great way to get introduced to Dublin
Peter was a really kind guy with a lot of knowledge. We liked the tour very much, since he showed us places where I might not have gone too, since they are so hidden or unspectacular, till he tells you something about it. We learned so much and it was very fun! I enjoyed it a lot and was delighted to have Peter as the tour guide!
We did the walking tour on the first day of our trip in Dublin, and as it was our first time visiting the city, it was a perfect way to get our bearings. Our tour guide (Conor) was very friendly and knowledgeable - we learnt all about the history of Dublin. The tour lasted about 2 hours and we were able to stop off and buy a coffee half way. We were recommended the restaurant Lundy Foot’s which does a discounted menu for people who have been on the tour - we had a delicious meal here! Would highly recommend!
