Itinerary

15 min

Please meet your guide at the designated meeting point for a prompt early morning departure. By starting our journey ahead of the rush, we’ll ensure you beat the heavy crowds and enjoy a much cooler, more serene experience at the sites. We recommend arriving 15 minutes early to ensure a smooth start to your adventure.

Admission included150 min

Step back in time at the Archaeological Park of Pompeii, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most evocative places on Earth. Frozen in time by the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 AD, this vast site offers a unique window into ancient Roman life. Walk through remarkably preserved streets, explore opulent villas adorned with vibrant frescoes, and marvel at the majestic temples and theaters that once formed the heart of this thriving city.

Pass by

Enter the city through Porta Marina, the most monumental of Pompeii’s seven gates. Walk in through this ancient gateway, originally designed for travelers arriving from the sea, and explore with your guide the impressive double-arch structure that separated pedestrians from carriages. As you pass through these massive stone walls, you’ll immediately feel the grandeur of the Roman Empire welcoming you into the streets of the past.

Admission included10 min

Step into the Forum, the monumental heart of ancient Pompeii. Explore with your guide the remains of the city's grandest temples and public buildings that once buzzed with political and commercial life. Walk in the footsteps of Roman citizens across this expansive square, where you can admire the iconic silhouette of Mt. Vesuvius looming in the distance—the perfect spot to capture the essence of this frozen city.

Admission included10 min

The Macellum of Pompeii was located on the Forum and as the provision market of Pompeii was one of the focal points of the ancient city. The building was constructed in several phases. When the earthquake of 62 CE destroyed large parts of Pompeii, the Macellum was also damaged.

Admission included10 min

The Forum Baths are located behind the Temple of Jupiter and date back to the years immediately after the founding of the colony of veterans by General Silla (80 BC). Women's and men's quarters had separate entrances. The men's section presents an apodyterium (dressing room), used also as a tepidarium (for medium temperature baths), frigidarium (for cold baths) and calidarium (for hot baths). Like many buildings in Pompeii, the baths were heavily damaged during the earthquake of 62 AD.

Admission included10 min

Dominated by the Vesuvius with its statues of Jupiter, Juno and Minerva, the temple was the Capitolium, similar to the one located in the Ancient Rome. The statues were highly placed to be visible to those passing in the Forum.

Admission included10 min

The House of the Faun (Casa del Fauno) is one of the largest and most luxurious private residences in Pompeii, occupying an entire city block. Named after the iconic bronze statue of a dancing faun found in its main atrium, the house is a masterpiece of Roman architecture and Hellenistic influence. It is most famous for housing the magnificent Alexander Mosaic, which depicts the battle between Alexander the Great and Darius III of Persia. With its two peristyle gardens and intricate floor mosaics, it remains a powerful symbol of the immense wealth and sophisticated taste of the city's elite.

Pass by

Via dell’Abbondanza was the ancient main street (decumanus maximus) of ancient Pompeii, which ran across the city in the direction east/west from the Forum to the Porta Sarno. In ancient times the street was crowded and noisy with many shops, workshops ("officinae”), cafes, snack-bars and restaurants for food and drink.

Pass by

The Basilica, with its extension of 1,500 square meters, was the most sumptuous building of the Forum, and its space was used to carry out business and for the administration of justice.

Admission included10 min

The Large Theater of Pompeii was built from the Romans on the slope of a hill located in the area; they took advantage of the natural depression of the mountain to create a majesty auditorium divided into 5 sectors. On the stage were played tragedies of the Greco-Roman traditions.

Pass by

The Lupanar of Pompeii is the most famous brothel in the ruined Roman city of Pompeii. It is of particular interest for the erotic paintings on its walls. Lupanar is Latin for "brothel". The Pompeii lupanar is also known as Lupanare Grande.

Hot day but worth it

Lots of walking but such an amazing experience. I suggest bringing plenty of water as it was hot. The ruins were a sight to see.

Great tour of Pompeii.

Daniela was great - she pointed out areas and landmarks in town on the way to Pompeii. Then in Pompeii, Vincenzo was amazing. He gave so much detail about what we saw around the ruins, we learned so much! Highly recommend this tour!

Amazing experience. Although I do think the price was a bit high, the host and tour guide was amazing and gave very knowledgeable information, which is what we wanted.

Half day trip

Very well organised, guides very friendly. Mello gave a bit of background information on the coach to Pompeii, very clear instructions when we got there and after having 20 minutes refreshment break we were straight through to meet our other guide Luigi who took us around Pompeii. He was extremely informative and interesting. I found that personally in the August heat a half day trip was enough. Very glad we went and my teenage son enjoyed it too. Thank you

Missed the highlights

We took the half day Pompeii tour. The air conditioned bus was awesome in the heat, Nello and Luciano did a great job in getting us there and back. Once in Pompei we were handed off to Luigi for the tour. He knew the history and what we saw — mainly the main streets, shops, bakeries was interesting, but he skipped the main highlights of the tour, and why I chose this tour. The description said we would see Casa di Fauno, the largest and most extravagant house in Pompeii. We didn’t. It said we’d see the Forum. We didn’t. We didn’t see the Grand Theater or even pass by the Forum baths or the brothel. When I asked Luigi if we’d be seeing these, he said he did a different tour. What we saw was not worth the tour price. He focused on main streets, and shops, bakeries, a bath house and the main square which showed us only a piece of the full livelihood of the people back then. Disappointed to say the least. They need to ensure that their tour description is what is shown.

Operator response

Dear Traveler, Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback and for your kind words regarding our transport team, Nello and Luciano. We are glad to know that the journey from Sorrento was comfortable and smooth. Our standard itinerary is carefully designed to include all the famous highlights of Pompeii, which we deliver consistently day after day. However, when exceptional on-site conditions arise, our guides must make real-time decisions to safeguard our guests' comfort. To give you full clarity on what occurred during your specific visit, Pompeii is an active archaeological park where monuments like the Grand Theater are subject to sudden temporary closures for maintenance beyond our control. Furthermore, on days with extreme summer heat and overwhelming crowds, standing in unshaded queues for over 30 minutes at spots like the Lupanar is simply unsafe for our groups. In these rare instances, our guides exercise expert discretion to protect you from the heat while maintaining a high-value experience. Near the House of the Faun, where the group pauses by the fountains, the guide provided the historical commentary from the exterior due to heavy congestion, choosing instead to offer a premium, quiet alternative: the magnificent House of Marcus Lucretius Fronto, alongside the Antiquarium. Far from cutting the experience short, these agile adjustments even allow us on occasion to gift our guests access to newly excavated sections that lie beyond the standard tour route. As for the Forum, it serves as the mandatory entryway and central axis of our route, making it an element every single group passes through. We appreciate your feedback as it allows us to explain the rare logistical challenges our guides manage behind the scenes, and we hope to welcome you back for another journey in the future. Kind regards, IAMME IA! Gray Line Team

If travelling in high season - particularly with kids then the early morning 4hr trip is perfect. It’s so hot - you definitely want to avoid the afternoon sun. Guide was great and we had a lovely visit - it’s a fascinating place!
