The boat and staff were knowledgeable and fun. We did see whales but didn’t get to swim with them. You can’t predict nature. We also saw dolphins, flying fish and a turtle.

The swimming with the whales was a great experience - 10/10. Everything else was very disappointing. 2/10 We booked months in advance. When arriving at the marina we didn’t get on the regular boat, instead they said a second boat was coming. It was a small zodiac and they crammed 12 passengers on. On the way out, it was like they were trying to talk us (and others) out of going in the water as though we weren’t going to be up to it. We are 55 and 60 but more than capable having just snorkeled Molokini creator the week before. The huge issue was getting back in the zodiac. The ladder only went so far, and there was nothing to grab hold of at the top - even the guide had issues. It was so bad that some passengers who wanted to go it, couldn’t because they wouldn’t be able to get back in. We were right near the other boat and they had no issues as the ladder set up was much better. It seems like our group was just a money grab. It was not what they advertised. No way anyone in a wheelchair could get in the zodiac, it was not comfortable, no flotation devices were seen, as for snacks and drinks, we were offered a biscuit from a foil pack and there was a carton of opened orange juice. Didn’t have any as no cups. If we hadn’t seen any whales it would have been 1 star.
Dear Michelle, Thank you for your feedback and we are very glad you rated the whale encounter itself 10/10. We would however like to respectfully clarify a few points, as some information in your review is not accurate. The boat you were on is not a small zodiac. It is a 12-seater professional diving boat, licensed for 12 passengers. It is specifically designed for this activity, with low sides that are practical for diving and for getting in and out of the water quickly and safely when swimming with whales. This is the standard type of boat used for whale swimming excursions. As clearly mentioned in our excursion description on our website and on TripAdvisor, you do need to be physically fit to get in and out of the boat to participate in swimming with whales. This is how all whale swimming tours operate. Regarding accessibility: if a guest has special requirements or needs assistance, we do provide extra help and adapt as much as possible, but guests must inform us in advance. And for safety reasons, guests still need to be physically able to get in and out of the water by themselves. Regarding safety: all required safety equipment, including flotation devices, are always on board, as per maritime regulations. They are stored in the dedicated compartments. For the snacks and drinks: water, juice and biscuits are provided on board after the swimming part. We are sorry you felt disappointed with the comfort compared to our other boat, but both boats are professional and compliant, and we use them to keep our groups small, which is better for the whales and for our guests. We appreciate your understanding. Kind regards, *The Tahiti By Boat Team*
Fantastic 🫶 The guide and the captain were the best 🌸❤️🤘
Dear Susan, Thank you so much for your lovely review! 🫶 We are so happy you enjoyed your respectful whale excursion with us. Our captain and guide will be thrilled to read that they were "the best"! 🌸 Thank you for choosing Tahiti By Boat and for respecting the whales with us. Hope to see you again soon! The Tahiti By Boat Team
We had high hopes for this tour based on other reviews. We were unable to see whales with the exception of a brief breach and that’s not the tour’s fault. However we signed up with the knowledge that the tour would be available in English translation. It was conducted primarily in French with the translation to English significantly less robust. There was no introduction of the guide or captain, no safety briefing (ie no info on life vests), and little information about the plan for the next 4-5 hours. The description indicates fresh fruit and drinks would be available, and if time permitted snorkeling in a lagoon. The snack was a half open package of cookies and shared fruit juice. There was no lagoon side trip offered. The weather and nature is out of the guide’s control of course but the experience on the boat itself is in their control. The description did not meet the actual experience.
Dear Janell, Thank you for your feedback and we are very sorry you didn't get to see whales properly on that day. Our guides do speak both English and French and we always try our best to provide information in both languages. We understand that the disappointment comes mainly from not seeing whales, and we are truly sorry for that, as whale encounters in the wild can never be guaranteed despite all our efforts. Kind regards, The Tahiti By Boat Team
We booked this tour because it was advertised as a small-group experience with a maximum of 6 people who can swim with the whales. Unfortunately, that is not what we received. It appears the operator did not have enough boats and arranged for another boat to take us instead. We were added to a family group, bringing the total to 11 people, including four young children around 5–6 years old. This was completely different from the experience we had booked and paid for. The day was also poorly organized. We were late getting started, and no snacks or water were provided. The boat felt overcrowded, and the atmosphere was uncomfortable from the beginning. The family we were placed with was clearly unhappy about the arrangement and about having additional people added to their boat because they couldn't go swimming together, so we had to be split up into 2 groups (which means that we had to look for another whale, and that takes time, and if we can actually find another whale) etc. At one point, when one of the older family members expressed his frustration, the situation escalated into yelling and arguing between him and the guide on the boat. It became extremely uncomfortable and stressful and honestly scary. The guides and people involved did not handle the situation well, and the overall attitude made an already unpleasant experience even worse. We paid a significant amount of money for a small-group tour with a maximum of 6 people. Instead, we were placed on a different boat with a larger group and a completely different experience than what was advertised. This was supposed to be a fun day on the water in Tahiti. Instead, it was chaotic, uncomfortable, and disappointing. We would not have booked this tour had we known we would be placed in a group of 9 people under these circumstances. Mind it, we went again with the same company on Moore, and the tour and guide were amazing!
Dear Ziuta, We would like to bring some clarification, as we feel there is some confusion about the tour you booked. *1. About the group size:* Our "Respectful whale excursion" is clearly advertised and sold as *12 people maximum on board*. This is stated on your booking voucher and on our TripAdvisor description. It is not a tour for 6 people maximum. If you are looking for a tour for 6 people maximum, other companies offer it, but at a significantly higher price. There may have been confusion on your side when checking the program description. *2. About the boat:* This was our boat and our crew. We did not transfer you to another operator. We do pick-ups at different docks in the morning, which is our standard procedure. We had already picked up other guests before coming to pick you up, which is why there were already people on board. *3. About swimming with the whales:* This is the most important point. We sell a whale *observation tour, with the possibility* to enter the water if conditions, whale behavior, and government regulations allow it. Swimming is never guaranteed. It is at the discretion of the guide and depends on many factors for the safety of both the whales and our guests. We completely understand the disappointment when swimming is not possible, especially when you have traveled far for this experience. We have noticed that most disappointing reviews we receive are for this exact reason, and while we fully understand the frustration, it is not a reflection of the organization or quality of the tour itself. The regulation is very strict and is there to protect the whales, and we have to respect it. Best regards,
You may not always get to swim with the whales. Your guides will determine if it is safe to do so on the day of your excursion and i appreciate their knowledge about the environment/conditions surrounding these animals.
Dear Jessica, Thank you so much for your lovely review and for your understanding. You are absolutely right - swimming with the whales is never guaranteed and always depends on the ocean conditions and the behavior of the animals. Our priority will always be the respect and safety of the whales, and of our guests. We are glad you appreciated our guide's knowledge and our respectful approach. That is exactly what we aim for at Tahiti By Boat. We hope to welcome you again on board! Warm regards, Tahiti By Boat Team
The pick up point wasn’t clearly marked. There was one too many passengers, so, I only got 20 minutes of interaction. Will not recommend this to anyone. While seeing the whales was very interesting, I should have had longer time in the water.
Dear Wander10830846103, Thank you for your feedback regarding our Whale Encounter tour. We would like to clarify what this tour includes, as described on our website and on TripAdvisor. This is a *whale observation excursion*. We do not guarantee a swim with whales. Putting guests in the water is only possible when safety conditions allow it, when the whales are calm, and when our guide judges that it respects the official approach rules for their protection. Regarding the organization on board: we strictly respect the capacity authorized by the government of French Polynesia, which is *12 passengers maximum on the boat, and 6 people maximum in the water at a time with a guide*. We never exceed this limit. On your tour, you were fortunate enough to even get in the water with the whales, which is not always possible. You were able to enjoy 20 minutes of interaction, and there is a reason for this duration: the other group of 6 guests on board also has to get in the water. We have to make it fair for everybody on board and share the encounter time equally between the two rotations. We are glad you found seeing the whales very interesting, and we thank you for your understanding of the regulations that protect them. Kind regards, *The Tahiti By Boat Team*
Very disappointing regarding the number of participants. Indeed, with only one guide, only 6 people can accompany them to see the whales in the water. Suffice it to say that the 2nd group has no chance of seeing them because the whales flee from the 1st group, and yet everyone pays the same price. The other companies only had 6 people max. It is therefore a case of overbooking. Furthermore, it was stated that fruit and fruit juice would be distributed, yet nothing was served. In conclusion, it is a company that only cares about money. .
Bien cordialement, *L'équipe Tahiti By Boat*
It was a great experience even though we didn’t see any while swimming. Saw plenty of whales on the surface! The crew was great and very knowledgeable Recommendation for the Captain: add a rope to the boat so people can hang on while others are climbing on board.
Dear Michael, Thank you for your review and for joining our Respectful Whale Excursion. We are glad to hear you had a great experience, saw plenty of whales on the surface, and enjoyed our knowledgeable crew, even though the swimming observation wasn't possible that day. Thank you also for your great suggestion about adding a rope to hold onto while boarding. That is very helpful feedback for the comfort and safety of our guests, and we will share it with our Captain right away. We hope to welcome you back again! Warm regards, *The Tahiti By Boat Team*
I had the absolute pleasure of joining Tahiti by Boat for a whale watching excursion during the filming of our travel series, DIY Destinations, and it was nothing short of spectacular. From the very beginning, the captain and crew were punctual, professional, and welcoming. The marina is perfectly located right in the city centre of Papeete — just minutes from most hotels — which made getting there effortless. We were incredibly fortunate to see many whales from the boat, and what truly elevated the experience was our guide. She was a passionate naturalist who shared fascinating insights into the lives of humpback whales, including their remarkable birthing process and migration patterns. Her knowledge was deep, and her respect for these magnificent creatures was evident in every word. Before we entered the water, she patiently walked us through exactly what we needed to do, ensuring everyone felt safe, prepared, and calm. All gear was provided and spotlessly clean — from snorkels to fins — which made the experience feel both safe and professional. To top it all off, at the end of the tour, we were offered a light snack — a thoughtful touch that made the experience feel even more special. If you're in Tahiti and looking for a whale watching experience that's educational, ethical, and unforgettable, I cannot recommend Tahiti by Boat enough. This is how marine tourism should be done. Mauruuru roa to the entire team for an unforgettable day on the water!
