Really enjoyed the ride, especially being able to experience the Tolt. The guides were lovely and patient and, being an experienced rider, really appreciated being able to try the Tolt on my beautiful horse. Highly recommend the experience.
Great experience - the group was split at one point between more experienced riders and lesser ones and so there’s nothing to be concerned if you’re new to riding. The horses are well kept and I had a very cooperative one. The staff were excellent and were very thorough in their explanation of safety and the ride in general.
Karolina, our guide, was amazing. Punctual, clear pick up. The ride itself was stunning and was a lengthy amount of time for the price. Loved this excursion!
We were picked up in Reykjavík along with several others and brought to the riding stables about 30 minutes outside the city. The stables provided boots and rain gear for those who needed them which was very helpful! There were about 20 people in our group of riders along with 3 guided (all young women from other EU countries, not Iceland, unfortunately their English was limited) and we mounted up in a small corral with no mounting blocks and set off on a nose to tail walking ride in a parkland just for horseback riding. After a few minutes the guides divided the group into 4 “advanced“ riders who were able to try tolting, and the rest who spent the ride walking nose to tail. There was limited guidance or instructions on how to tolt. The total time riding was just 90 minutes . At the end we asked to brush our horses and were told no. Since the group was so large we felt like just one of many, at least half the total time was spent in transportation back and forth to the city and getting the whole group dressed and mounted, and the guides did not teach or communicate very much about the horses or the landscape . Unfortunately this did not feel like a “special “ experience and did not live up to my expectations for this experience. In retrospect i wish we had arranged to ride at a stable further away from the city (in a different part of Iceland) and in a private or very small group.
Finally got to tick that off my bucket list :) Last time I was in Iceland I had the worst experience of my life riding with a different tour provider. But this time it was awesome with Sólhestar! We got picket up in front of our hotel by one of the guides. The drive to the stable is about 30min or less. Then we got provided with helmets and waterproof clothing (the waterproof clothes are optional if the weather is good or you have great waterproof clothes with you.). We got lucky because it wasn't windy (very important when riding) but it did rain a little. We got horses assigned depending on experience. Those who didn't know how to ride got a good thorough explanation on what to do. The experienced few were just instructed on what to expect and that they would get to try the Tölt. The experience takes about 1h30min which is plenty for people who just want to try riding Icelandic horses or people who don't know how to ride. After taking pictures at a nice red lava spot we got split into two groups: the no experience and the experienced group. I was in the experienced group and got to ride Tölt quite a few times. It was really enjoyable with nice views and a lovely horse.
Wow! This was a really great experience. The horses were all super friendly and adorable, and we got amazing complimentary drinks as well. Our driver was very kind and fun.
The Icelandic horses are beautiful! They are calm and easy to ride. The ride lasted long enough although I wish they would have split us up so some of us could ride the horses at the tolt gait. It was nice that we were picked up in Rekyavik and it was only a half hour drive.
Fun, beautiful day with lovely horses and wonderful guides. They were very helpful and kind to beginners. Note the 240lb limit is real, those horses are not big so be real about your weight.
This is a very well supervised experience of riding the special Icelandic horses through the beautiful red rock lava caves. Even if you have limited experience riding horses, you’ll enjoy this experience. My only disappointment was that the guides did not share any information about what makes the Icelandic horses so special. Also I would have liked if they had demonstrated for us the unique gait that these horses have.
