Memphis, founded around 3,100 BC, is the legendary city of Menes, the King who united Upper and Lower Egypt. Early on, Memphis was more like a fortress from which Menes controlled the land and water routes between Upper Egypt and the Delta. Having probably originated in Upper Egypt, from Memphis, he could control the conquered people of Lower Egypt.

Sakkara is one section of the great necropolis of Memphis, the Old Kingdom capital and the kings of the 1st Dynasty as well as that of the 2nd Dynasty. are mostly buried in this section of the Memphis necropolis. Three major discoveries have recently been made at Sakkara, including a prime minister's tomb, a queen's pyramid, and the tomb of the son of a dynasty founding king. Much to improve.

Today we had a private tour with the Jazmin guide for about 3 hours. What a disappointment!! I would have preferred to do it on our own and renting an Uber. His Spanish leaves much to be desired, as we asked him some questions and he could not understand what we were asking. Then in each of the places visited, the information is BASIC which you can get better from Google. Additionally she is not active, I think she does not like her work or does not do it gladly. We definitely do not recommend it. For this type of tour I hoped to find a guide who would leave me motivated to continue learning about this beautiful culture.

My family and I did this tour in July. Our tour guide, Mohamad, was awesome. We had 3 children 7, 5, and 3 and he did a great job helping us keep them busy! He was so awesome with the kids, even giving them nicknames and helping hold and keep them contained. He helped us customize the tour to maximize our experience yet keep the kids happy! The tour was a great balance between fun site seeing and learning the awesome history of Ancient Egypt. We added a local Egyptian lunch which was fantastic. I highly recommend this half day tour, especially for those with small children. Well worth it.

Mohammed was a really excellent guide. He made the history come to life, telling the stories of Alexander the Great, Anthony and Cleopatra, and Ramesses. And all this amid the power-plays of the great ancient kingdoms.

His English is excellent and it never felt like he was stuck on a script. When we were finished with the tour, he suggested some really great restaurants near our hotel one famous, atmospheric and expensive, one cheap and clean, and a local ahwa coffee house.

Memphis and Sakkara are interesting places to visit. You can see the development of the pyramid tombs, plus some beautiful carved reliefs. If you're continuing onwards in Egypt to the Valley of the Kings, I expect there are probably better chances to see similar things.

Practical stuff: the car was very clean and Fula was a good driver. We visited the sites as advertised and weren't asked to make any extra stops at gift shops or other vendors.

Seeing the statues of Ramses !! at Memphis in the open air museum was interesting as you could walk all around the statues. Our guide explained that in an area behind the museum the historians thought there may be other statues still buried. After Memphis we went to the pyramids at Sakkara which are older than the Giza pyramids. The drive between the two sites gave our guide time to discuss the history of the area.

The Sakkara step pyramid was incredible! It's really close to Giza. Memphis didn't have as much, but it was still great to see. Our tour guide Tito was so informative! I highly recommend asking for him!
