Cairo Travel Guide 2026: Giza and Grand Egyptian Museum tickets, how many days and what it costs

Cairo puts the pyramids of Giza, the new Grand Egyptian Museum and a medieval Islamic city within one sprawling metropolis of more than 22 million people. The decisions that shape a trip are which tickets to buy at Giza, how to book the Grand Egyptian Museum now that it sells only timed tickets online, and whether to see the city with a guide or on your own. This guide gives 2026 ticket prices from official pages, the rules that changed in the last 18 months, and typical prices from 1,440 bookable tours.
Cairo at a glance
Cairo spreads along both banks of the Nile. The pyramids of Giza and the Grand Egyptian Museum sit on the western desert edge, just over a mile apart; the medieval city founded by the Fatimids in 969–970, with al-Azhar, al-Mu'izz Street and the Citadel, lies on the east bank, with Coptic Cairo and the Civilization Museum to its south. Distances are long and traffic is slow, so plan each day around one side of the river.
| Population | About 9.8 million in the city (2023 census data); over 22 million in Greater Cairo |
|---|---|
| Protected as | Historic Cairo, UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979; the pyramid fields from Giza to Dahshur and Memphis are a separate World Heritage Site |
| Airports | Cairo International (CAI), about 22 km north-east of the centre · Sphinx International (SPX), on the Cairo–Alexandria desert road, serving Giza |
| Giza Plateau ticket | EGP 700 for foreign adults, EGP 350 for students |
| Grand Egyptian Museum | Fully open since 4 November 2025; timed tickets online only |
| Metro fare | EGP 10 for up to 9 stations since March 2026 |
| Visa on arrival | 30 US dollars in cash, or 36 US dollars by card for the digital visa at Cairo airport since August 2026 |

How much are Giza Pyramids and Grand Egyptian Museum tickets in 2026?
Verdict: Book the Grand Egyptian Museum on its official site as soon as your dates are fixed, and buy the Giza ticket at the plateau. Pay to go inside the Great Pyramid only if a cramped, steep climb to an empty chamber is worth EGP 1,500 to you; Saqqara's inclusive ticket opens several decorated tombs for less.
| Ticket (foreign adult) | Price | Student | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Giza Plateau area | EGP 700 | EGP 350 | Outside of the pyramids and the Sphinx; does not cover any pyramid interior |
| Great Pyramid (Khufu) interior | EGP 1,500 | EGP 750 | Raised from EGP 900 in January 2025; the official site still shows EGP 1,000 — check at the ticket office |
| Grand Egyptian Museum | About 30 US dollars in Egyptian pounds (EGP 1,590 in one July 2026 guide) | Ages 6–25: about half | Online only, timed slot; rising to 35 US dollars from 1 November 2026 |
| Egyptian Museum, Tahrir | EGP 550 | EGP 275 | Daily 09:00–17:00, tickets until 16:00 |
| Civilization Museum (NMEC) | EGP 550 | EGP 300 | Royal Mummies Hall; a rise is planned from 1 April |
| Saqqara area · inclusive ticket | EGP 600 · EGP 1,400 | EGP 300 · EGP 700 | Serapeum EGP 340 and Djoser's pyramid EGP 280 are extra |
| Dahshur | EGP 200 | EGP 100 | Red Pyramid; 08:00–17:00 |
| Cairo Citadel | EGP 550 | EGP 275 | Muhammad Ali Mosque inside |
The Giza area ticket covers the plateau, the outside of the three pyramids and the Sphinx. The interiors of the Great Pyramid, Khafre's and Menkaure's pyramids, the Tomb of Meresankh III and the Workers' Cemetery all need separate tickets. Official opening hours differ between pages of the ministry's own site (08:00–16:00 for the plateau, 07:00–17:00 for the Great Pyramid), so arrive at opening and plan to be done by mid-afternoon.
How the new Giza entrance works
Since spring 2025 the main entrance is on the Fayoum Highway on the south side of the plateau, replacing the old gate by the Mena House hotel. Private cars and tour buses can no longer drive around the pyramids: you leave the vehicle at the visitor centre and ride electric buses, which run about every five minutes and are included in the admission price. Ticket machines there take cash and cards.
The same overhaul moved camel and horse operators and vendors into designated zones further from the entrance, after years of complaints about harassment. Some visitors still report waiting for buses or walking in the heat, so carry water and a hat.
Grand Egyptian Museum tickets are online only and non-refundable
The GEM sells tickets for a set date and entry slot on tickets.gem.eg, the only site it recognises. Tickets cannot be refunded or transferred, and each allows one entry with no re-entry. Children under six enter free; student and youth discounts require ID. Foreign cards are sometimes declined at payment — try another card rather than a lookalike site.
Egypt announced higher GEM prices from 1 November 2026, with the foreign ticket moving from 30 to 35 US dollars (charged in Egyptian pounds). Check the price at booking.

Grand Egyptian Museum, Egyptian Museum or NMEC: which should you visit?
Verdict: The Grand Egyptian Museum first: it now holds Tutankhamun's treasures and Khufu's boats. Add the Civilization Museum for the royal mummies, and the old Egyptian Museum only if you have a spare half day and like dense, old-fashioned displays.
| Museum | Highlights | Hours |
|---|---|---|
| Grand Egyptian Museum (Giza) | Tutankhamun Galleries with more than 5,300 objects from the tomb, Grand Staircase, Khufu's Boats Museum | Galleries 09:00–18:00; to 21:00 on Wednesday and Saturday |
| Egyptian Museum (Tahrir) | Yuya and Thuya, Tanis treasures, Narmer Palette, statues of the pyramid builders | 09:00–17:00, tickets until 16:00 |
| Civilization Museum (Fustat) | 22 royal mummies moved here in 2021 | Check before visiting |
Many guides still send readers to Tahrir for the gold mask and the mummies. Both have moved: the mask to the Grand Egyptian Museum, and 22 royal mummies (18 kings and four queens) to the Civilization Museum in the Pharaohs' Golden Parade of April 2021. The Tahrir museum, open since 1902, remains worth it for its older collections and its building.
The GEM is large: the practical minimum is about three hours, of which the Tutankhamun galleries alone take around 90 minutes. Last entry is an hour before the galleries close, and flash photography is not allowed. Wednesday and Saturday evenings, when galleries stay open until 21:00, are the way to fit the pyramids and the museum into one day without rushing.

When is the best time to visit Cairo?
Cairo is a desert city: about 25 mm of rain falls in a whole year, and from June to September there is effectively none. The question is heat, not rain. Winter days are mild, around 19–21 °C, while July and August average about 35 °C in the afternoon.
October to April is the best time to visit Cairo
Comfortable temperatures for long days at Giza and Saqqara, which have little shade. This is also high season, when popular Grand Egyptian Museum slots can sell out, so book the museum early.
March to May brings the khamsin dust storms
The seasonal khamsin wind usually peaks in April. Storms can cut visibility sharply; in April 2025 the authorities advised people in Greater Cairo to wear masks outdoors. Keep a flexible day in the plan.
June to September is the hottest season
Go to Giza at opening, spend midday inside the Grand Egyptian Museum, and save Islamic Cairo and the Nile for the evening. Ramadan in 2027 is expected to start around 8 February, with the exact date set by moon sighting; museum hours are shorter (the Egyptian Museum closes at 16:00), and eating or drinking in public in daylight is considered insensitive.
| Month | Max / min | Rain | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | 19° / 10° | 5 mm | Coolest month; pleasant for walking all day |
| February | 21° / 11° | 4 mm | Ramadan expected from about 8 February 2027 |
| March | 24° / 13° | 6 mm | Khamsin dust storms possible |
| April | 28° / 16° | 1 mm | Khamsin peak; warm afternoons |
| May | 32° / 19° | 0 mm | Hot by midday; start early |
| June | 35° / 22° | 0 mm | Dry and hot |
| July | 35° / 24° | 0 mm | Hottest stretch; museums at midday |
| August | 35° / 24° | 0 mm | Hot nights too |
| September | 33° / 23° | 0 mm | Still hot |
| October | 30° / 20° | 1 mm | Start of high season |
| November | 25° / 16° | 4 mm | Comfortable; GEM prices rise on 1 November 2026 |
| December | 21° / 12° | 3 mm | Mild days, cool evenings |
How do you get to Cairo and get around?
| Route | How | Time / cost |
|---|---|---|
| Cairo airport (CAI) to the centre | Uber or Careem, or a metered white taxi; no metro to the airport | About 22 km; 40–90 min depending on traffic |
| Sphinx airport (SPX) to Giza | Taxi or ride-hailing | Airport serves Giza; useful for easyJet and Wizz Air flights |
| Across the city | Metro lines 1–3 | EGP 10 up to 9 stations, EGP 12 up to 16, EGP 15 up to 23, EGP 20 up to 39 |
| Centre to the GEM and Giza | Ride-hailing, taxi or tour | The GEM is about 18 km west of the centre and hard to reach without a car |
| Cairo to Alexandria | Train from Ramses station | About 2.5 h on faster trains, 3.5 h on slower ones |
Uber, Careem and inDrive all work in Cairo and remove the haggling. On the street, white taxis use meters; the older black-and-white cabs generally do not, so agree the fare before you get in. Women travelling alone are advised by the UK government to take extra care in taxis at night and to share the driver's details and live location with a friend.
The metro, open since 1987, is cheap and avoids traffic for the centre, Coptic Cairo and the east bank, but it does not reach the airport, and the Grand Egyptian Museum and the pyramids are best reached by car. Driving yourself is a poor idea: road accidents are common, and the UK advises against driving outside the cities at night.
What are the best things to do in Cairo?
Must do = don't leave without it; Worth it = if it fits the plan. Tour prices are typical (median) prices per person across all matching tours on Excurgo.
1. Walk the Giza Plateau and see the Sphinx Must do· at opening
The Great Pyramid, built for Khufu around 2589–2566 BC, rose 146.5 metres and stayed the tallest structure on earth for about 3,800 years. Below it, the Sphinx is carved straight out of the bedrock in the reign of Khafre. Use the electric buses between viewpoints and save the walk for the panorama over all the pyramids.
248 Giza Pyramids and Sphinx tours on Excurgo · from $4, typical $30 per person · rated 4.9 across 26,465 reviews
2. Spend half a day at the Grand Egyptian Museum Must do· book ahead
The Tutankhamun galleries, Khufu's Boats Museum and the Grand Staircase lined with statues. Pair it with Giza on the same day — the two are just over a mile apart — or come on a Wednesday or Saturday evening.
3. Go to Saqqara and Dahshur Must do· half day
About 40 km south-west of Cairo, Saqqara has Djoser's Step Pyramid, dated to around 2686–2667 BC, the Pyramid Texts in the tomb of Unas and the Serapeum's galleries of Apis bull burials. At Dahshur, EGP 200 buys the Red Pyramid of Sneferu. A driver or a tour is the simple way to combine the two.
242 Saqqara, Memphis and Dahshur tours on Excurgo · from $5, typical $55 per person · rated 4.9 across 18,525 reviews
4. Walk al-Mu'izz Street to Khan el-Khalili Must do· late afternoon
The Fatimid main street runs from Bab al-Futuh in the north to Bab Zuweila in the south, lined with medieval madrasas and mosques. Khan el-Khalili, the souq beside it near al-Azhar, is best as the light fades. Al-Azhar Mosque itself dates from the Fatimid founding of the city, 970–972.
118 Islamic and Coptic Cairo tours on Excurgo · from $5, typical $35 per person · rated 4.8 across 7,515 reviews
5. Climb to the Citadel Worth it
Salah ad-Din began the fortress in 1176, and it remained the seat of Egyptian power until the late 19th century. The Muhammad Ali Mosque stands inside; the ticket is EGP 550.
6. See the great mosques: Sultan Hasan and Ibn Tulun Worth it
The Mosque-Madrasa of Sultan Hasan is a monumental 14th-century Mamluk complex. A short ride away, the Mosque of Ibn Tulun, built in 876–879, is a rare Abbasid building outside Iraq, with a vast courtyard and a spiral minaret. Dress modestly for both.
7. Explore Coptic Cairo Worth it
Within the old Babylon Fortress are the Hanging Church, built over a gatehouse so its nave seems suspended, the church of Abu Serga where tradition says the Holy Family stayed, the Ben Ezra Synagogue and the Coptic Museum, open since 1910. Combine it with the Civilization Museum nearby in Fustat.
8. Meet the royal mummies at the Civilization Museum Worth it
The Royal Mummies Hall holds 22 kings and queens moved here in 2021. Tickets are EGP 550 for foreign adults; a price rise is planned from 1 April.
11 Civilization Museum tours on Excurgo · from $11, typical $40 per person · rated 4.9 across 574 reviews
9. Visit the Egyptian Museum at Tahrir Worth it
Open since 1902 and still the place for the burial of Yuya and Thuya, the gold of Tanis and the Narmer Palette. Phone photos are free; flash is not allowed.
10. Sail a felucca or take a Nile dinner cruise Worth it· sunset
A felucca at sunset is the quietest way to see the Nile from the water. Dinner cruises add dinner and a show; choose them for the evening out rather than for the river.
21 felucca tours on Excurgo · from $9, typical $37 per person · rated 4.9 across 2,428 reviews
42 Nile dinner cruise tours on Excurgo · from $8, typical $38 per person · rated 4.7 across 5,113 reviews
11. Eat Cairo with a food tour or cooking class Worth it
Koshari, ful, falafel made with fava beans and street sweets are easier to find, and to order, with someone local. A food tour or a home cooking class is the shortcut.
19 food and cooking tours on Excurgo · from $8, typical $43 per person · rated 4.9 across 1,559 reviews
Worth skipping
- Unofficial GEM ticket sites. Only tickets.gem.eg is recognised by the museum, and lookalike domains charge more.
- Unrequested camel and horse rides at Giza. Agree what you get and the full price before you mount, or skip it.
- A day trip to Luxor by air on your first visit. It works, but it is a very long day; Luxor deserves at least a night.
- Driving yourself. Traffic and road safety make a driver or ride-hailing the better choice.
What are the best day trips from Cairo?
Saqqara and Dahshur (above) are the classic half day. For a full day, Alexandria is the easiest to do alone by train; Faiyum and the White Desert are much easier on a tour: Wadi Al-Hitan admits visitors only on guided trips, and the White Desert is about 570 km away.
| Where | Distance / how | Time | Tours on Excurgo |
|---|---|---|---|
| Saqqara, Memphis and Dahshur | About 40 km south-west | Half day | 242 tours, typical $55 |
| Alexandria | Train from Ramses station | About 2.5–3.5 h each way | 55 tours, typical $108 |
| Faiyum and Wadi El Rayan | Faiyum about 100 km south-west; Wadi Al-Hitan about 150 km | Full day | 25 tours, typical $129 |
| White Desert and Bahariya | White Desert about 570 km south-west | Usually 2 days with a night camping | 48 tours, typical $240 |
| Luxor | About 640 km; flight about 65 min | Very long day by air | 22 tours, typical $500 |
Alexandria's Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa were rediscovered by chance in 1900; the ancient Pharos lighthouse was destroyed by an earthquake in the 14th century. Allow a full day.
55 Alexandria tours on Excurgo · from $10, typical $108 per person · rated 4.7 across 3,952 reviews
Wadi Al-Hitan, the Valley of the Whales, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2005 and lies inside the Wadi El Rayan Protected Area. The White Desert's chalk formations, protected since 2002, are too far for a day: plan two days with a night under the stars. The UK government's advice against travel to most of the Western Desert makes exceptions for Faiyum and the White and Black Deserts.
25 Faiyum tours on Excurgo · from $17, typical $129 per person · rated 4.9 across 1,654 reviews
48 White Desert tours on Excurgo · from $94, typical $240 per person · rated 4.9 across 1,873 reviews

Where should you stay in Cairo: Giza or downtown?
Verdict: Split the stay if you can: one or two nights near the pyramids for Giza and the Grand Egyptian Museum, the rest in central Cairo for Islamic and Coptic Cairo and the Egyptian Museum. With one base only, choose central Cairo and visit Giza as a single long day.
Giza, near the pyramids, puts you minutes from the plateau and the GEM, which lie just over a mile apart, and close to Sphinx airport — but about 18 km from the centre. Downtown and the Nile-side districts put the Egyptian Museum, the metro and Islamic Cairo within easy reach. Near Cairo airport only makes sense for a late arrival or early flight.
Is Cairo safe? Rules, safety and money
The UK government does not advise against travel to Cairo or Giza; its warnings cover North Sinai, the Libyan border area and most of the Western Desert. The US State Department rates Egypt at Level 2, 'exercise increased caution'. Both point to a terrorism risk, including at places foreigners visit, and both advise avoiding demonstrations.
- Touts and scams: the main day-to-day problem in tourist areas. Use reputable operators and agree prices in advance. Tourist police: 126.
- Crime: generally low and pickpocketing rare, according to the UK government; keep copies of your passport separate.
- Photography: it is illegal to photograph military property; ask before photographing officials. Drones need Ministry of Defence permission — unauthorised use can mean prison.
- Dress: cover shoulders and knees, especially in mosques and souqs.
- Alcohol: only in licensed bars and restaurants, private homes and some resorts; drinking elsewhere is illegal.
- Women travellers: take extra care alone in taxis at night; share the driver's details and live location.
- Visa: 30 US dollars cash on arrival (30 days), a card-paid digital visa at Cairo airport for 36 US dollars since August 2026, or an e-visa in advance. Passports need six months' validity. Check GOV.UK for your nationality.
- Money: you may bring in or take out up to EGP 5,000 in cash; declare foreign currency over 10,000 US dollars. Restaurant bills often include a 10–12% service charge, and a small cash tip on top is customary.
What mistakes do travellers regret in Cairo?
- Turning up at the Grand Egyptian Museum without a ticket — sales are online, by time slot, and non-refundable.
- Buying from a lookalike ticket site instead of tickets.gem.eg.
- Looking for Tutankhamun at Tahrir — his treasures are at the GEM, and the royal mummies are at the Civilization Museum.
- Trusting old prices: inside the Great Pyramid is EGP 1,500, not EGP 900; the metro is EGP 10, not EGP 8.
- Expecting to drive round the pyramids — private cars and tour buses stop at the visitor centre; electric buses take over.
- Arriving at Giza in the afternoon in summer, with closing time and the heat against you.
- Skipping Saqqara and Dahshur to spend more time at Giza.
- Photographing police, soldiers or military buildings.
Cairo FAQ
How much does it cost to visit the Giza pyramids in 2026?
The Giza Plateau ticket is EGP 700 for foreign adults and EGP 350 for students. It covers the plateau, the outside of the pyramids and the Sphinx. Going inside the Great Pyramid costs EGP 1,500 since January 2025, although the official website still lists EGP 1,000 — check at the ticket office.
Is it worth going inside the Great Pyramid?
Only if the experience of being inside matters more to you than what you see. The interior ticket costs EGP 1,500 on top of the area ticket. For less, Saqqara's inclusive ticket (EGP 1,400) opens several decorated tombs, and Dahshur's Red Pyramid costs EGP 200.
Do I need to book the Grand Egyptian Museum in advance?
Yes. Tickets are sold online on tickets.gem.eg for a set date and entry slot, and on-site sales for international visitors are reported to have ended. Tickets are non-refundable and single-entry. Book early between October and April, when popular slots sell out.
Is Tutankhamun's mask still in the Egyptian Museum at Tahrir Square?
No. The gold mask and the tomb's treasures are now in the Grand Egyptian Museum, whose Tutankhamun galleries show more than 5,300 objects. The royal mummies moved to the Civilization Museum in Fustat in April 2021.
Can you visit the pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum on the same day?
Yes — they are just over a mile apart. Do the plateau at opening and the museum in the afternoon, allowing at least three hours. On Wednesdays and Saturdays the galleries stay open until 21:00, which makes the day far easier.
Is Cairo safe for tourists in 2026?
Neither the UK nor the US advises against travel to Cairo; the US rates Egypt Level 2, 'exercise increased caution'. The UK warns of a terrorism risk, says crime is generally low and that touts and scammers target tourists. Avoid demonstrations and use reputable operators.
How do I get from Cairo airport to the city or to Giza?
Use Uber or Careem, or a metered white taxi. There is no metro to the airport. The centre is about 22 km away, 40–90 minutes depending on traffic; if your flight lands at Sphinx International instead, you are already on the Giza side.
Can I get a visa on arrival in Egypt?
UK citizens can: 30 US dollars in cash for up to 30 days, or, since August 2026 at Cairo airport, a digital visa on arrival for 36 US dollars paid by card. An e-visa bought in advance is valid for up to three months. Your passport needs six months' validity.
What is the best time of year to visit Cairo?
October to April, when days are warm rather than hot. From June to September afternoons average around 35 °C. March to May can bring khamsin dust storms, which usually peak in April.
How many days do you need in Cairo?
Three full days: Giza and the Grand Egyptian Museum; Islamic Cairo with the Citadel and Khan el-Khalili; then Saqqara and Dahshur with Coptic Cairo. Add a day for Alexandria or Faiyum.
