Private Surf Lesson Experience in Poipu HI

The clock starts ticking at the surf shop at 12 noon sharp. Travis arrived, gave my husband and son instructions then we went to the beach for surfing, which ended at 1:29p sharp. Travis was very kind and gave us a ride to the beach (less than 2 miles away) since Uber wasn't readily found. My husband and son loved this activity and enjoyed it very much. Travis was a great instructor. Im giving it 4 stars because the 1-1/2 hour lesson includes travel time to the beach, which takes time (driving, looking for parking, boards transport to the beach, looking for free space at the beach etc. But my boys loved this activity.

My wife and I - both over 40 with no surfing experience - had an absolute BLAST during our private lesson with Coach Chris T. From the outset Chris assured us of something we did not initially believe: that surfing was going to be way easier than we expected. Now, it was not "easy." At the same time, it was far more accessible than we could have imagined. Coach Chris got us into a relaxed mode which made our morning much more enjoyable and our surfing far more successful. After several "push-ins" we were paddling into our own small waves and riding them to shore. Based on our experience I can 100% confirm that catching a wave will have you sitting on top of the world. Chris was awesome to work with and the entire experience was rad. Even for the over 40 set. Mahalo!

I chose Poipu surf because they were the only company that had a 4 pm spot as I was here for a conference. I did not regret it. I did get there a day earlier and did a last minute session with a school whose hut was right there, but was not as enjoyable as there was not a significant instruction. I definitely got better and, more importantly, had a blast. No, you’re not going to get the experience a week long surf camp will get you, but, if you have the stamina they will get you standing. I went with this company every day for a week and worked with Kami, Chris,and Travis. Each had just a bit of different teaching and I benefited from what each had to say about how to read waves and stand up. I have taken a couple of surf camps prior, and this unfortunately isn’t that, but their goal, in an hour and a half, is to get you up and catching a wave, and they definitely are very capable. I did benefit from visiting off season and thus many times it was the just the instructor and myself. As I progressed through the week, Chris and Travis changed the structure of the lessons to make it a bit more challenging (different boards, going farther). They would not be able to have done that unless they observed me for a few lessons, but I really appreciated the thoughtfulness. Thanks for a great time!

We booked a private lesson for our family of 4, and it was great! Chris did a great job working with each of us individually, and it was the highlight of our trip!

A private lesson with Chris taught us all the basics of surfing. His instruction and personalized feedback to each of us allowed us to improve over the 1.5 lesson. Great experience.
