Kauai's Ultimate Semi-Private Surf Lesson

Adam was an exceptional teacher. He was very engaged with us the entire session, I booked a private session for my 11 year old daughter & myself. Neither one of us have surfed before, my daughter was able to ride a wave the 2nd try thanks to Adam. They provided rash guards, water shoes & the long board was very sturdy. Upon returning to check in the entire staff was extremely friendly.

We booked a semi private surfing lesson for two 9 year old girls. We had taken lessons once before in Maui and they were fantastic, so maybe our expectations were high. Our instructor seemed nice enough during the introduction to my girls, but he didn’t ask questions that I thought he might want to know, such as are you a strong swimmer? Have you swam in the ocean before? Simple questions just to get to know them & their swimming abilities. They are both very strong swimmers, but I never take my eyes off of them, even with a life jacket on. At the beginning of the lesson, he informed us that he needed to put on sunscreen so sent the two small girls off with 2 huge surfboards to meet him at the end of the beach. My husband saw him then proceed to his truck for the next 10 to 15 minutes, talking to somebody (maybe a friend) while the girls waited for him. When he finally showed up, the girls followed him into the ocean. There were several other adults, taking surf lessons with different instructors. Our instructor turned his back for the next 30 minutes to our girls while “chitchatting” to the other instructors in the ocean. We were alarmed by how little attention he was paying to them as well as how little he was actually instructing them or interacting with them. Our instructor was literally putting our girls in danger by not keeping his eyes on them because his back was turned to them. At one point my daughter was struck by another surfer in the face. At that point I swam out to him from the beach to tell him how upset I was that his back has been to the girls the entire time and how DANGEROUS this situation is. He was totally clueless. It was so disappointing and a total joke. He should not be working with children. It’s just too risky.

Highly recommend this surf lesson!! It starts with about 20 minutes of an on land safety session (with on land practice) then you get the rest of the time in the water! Poipu is perfect for beginners and I got up on the first try (snowboarding and wakeboarding experience helps) My semi-private booking was private since nobody else booked, and Adam was super helpful giving me feedback on why I would fall - but had a very successful session! If I was staying longer I would’ve booked again to learn how to catch my own wave without guidance!

I had a great lesson with Hawaiian Style Surfing!! I think my teacher's name was Adam (I could have that wrong). All the staff were very kind and patient. I have taken surf lessons in other countries, but I think this approach was the best way I've learned to surf!! My entire group (on a business trip, with varying levels of surfing experience and ages) all got up a couple of times!!!

My girls (12 and 14) have never surfed before and they were nervous. Austin and Tom were our instructors and we had a great time. The girls loved it and those guys were great. I highly recommend them.

We had a great surf experience. My kiddo loved her time and she can't wait to get back out there and keep on learning soon! Little too much time on the shore (we got super hot) but overall it was a fantastic experience. Would highly recommend!

I had my first surfing lesson with Hawaiian Style Surfing, and it was an incredible experience! Adam was my instructor, and I can’t recommend him enough. I was really nervous at first, especially with the waves looking a bit intimidating, but Adam made me feel completely safe. He was very knowledgeable, patient, and encouraging, which helped me feel comfortable in the water. I ended up catching a couple of waves and had so much fun throughout the lesson. It was such a memorable experience that I’m already thinking about doing it again. If you’re considering surfing lessons, Hawaiian Style Surfing is the way to go—be sure to ask for Adam!

I've been surfing off and on for years, but my progress had hit a plateau, especially in key areas like positioning for a set, timing (paddling and pop up), adjusting my weight on the board, and turning. I decided to start fresh with a group lesson and then followed up with a semi-private lesson (which ended up private as nobody else booked). Adam, my instructor, was absolutely incredible. Adam is chilled out and patient, and he quickly spotted the exact areas where I was struggling. He explained everything very clearly and in a way that was easy to understand. He didn't just teach me what to do, but he taught me HOW to do it. In just two lessons alone, Adam helped me break through plateaus I’ve had for years. I’ve taken surf lessons in different parts of the world, but Adam is by far the best instructor I’ve ever had. Proper wave positioning has been such a tricky skill for me to learn, and no one before Adam had been able to teach me how to learn it. He explained it in a way that clicked instantly, something I’ve needed for over a decade. If you're struggling with this, make sure to ask Adam about his technique—it’s a game changer! I ended up catching and riding more waves in two lessons with Adam than I have in years. Save yourself the frustration of missing more waves and let Adam guide you past your sticking points. As a bonus, they provide you with reef shoes to protect your feet. It's also very convenient to check-in for your lesson if you're already staying at the Sheraton Kauai Resort @ Poipu. Hawaiian Style Surfing is hands down a must-book lesson.

Fabulous! The instructor spent plenty of time on land giving instructions and practicing then when I to the water to help each person catch each wave. We had semi private lessons ( two people with one instructor). I highly recommend doing this exclusions. Well worth the money!

Great experience! Our instructor, Hudson, was fantastic. Laid back and fun but also took safety and teaching very seriously. Especially good with our 8 year old who was apprehensive at first but ended up loving the game experience. We all almost got up on the boards during the first lesson! It was our family of four + the instructor (Hudson) so an excellent opportunity to really get hands on instruction. Would highly recommend! We will use this company + Hudson next time we are in Kauai.
