Samaria Gorge is the longest gorge in Europe, measuring 16 km, giving you the opportunity to meet rare structures and species of the Cretan flora and fauna like the unique goat species named Kri-Kri that one can only find in Crete. Through a beautiful route among small traditional mountainous villages you reach Xyloskalo in the plateau of Omalos, the northern entrance of the gorge at an altitude of 1,250 m. As you keep walking you will pass from the “Sideroportes” (Iron doors) the narrowest point of Samaria, ending at the shores of the Libyan Sea in Agia Roumeli where you can definitely rest, eat and swim. It is exactly what you need! Apart from this, during your hike there are a lot of interesting historical points like the temple of Apollo, giving you a great combination of nature and Greek History.

This tour was executed exactly as advertised. Nikos and his team were on time, friendly, helpful, and full of useful information. The level of communication pre-tour was excellent. The hike is stunning, even if you’re accustomed to beautiful mountain hikes in your home country. As all the reviews say, the hike is an 8-mile descent with another 2-mile flat paved walk to the beach. The trail is very well maintained with several water refills. You don’t get winded or dehydrate like you do hiking at altitude, but it is hard on your knees and calves. Plan on a full day of recovery (relaxing on a beach). After the hike you can swim and grab a bite at one of several restaurants in Agia Roumeli. Then catch a ferry (5:30 p.m. to Sfakion if that’s where you’re getting picked up) and then it’s a healthy drive back to Chania. It’s a long day but well worth it. You have to buy your entrance ticket to the national park and your ferry ticket ahead of time and separately. Keep track of your national park ticket because they check it at the end of the trail (you show your e-ticket and get a small printed one at the trailhead, which you have to present at the end). Samaria Gorge is a unique place. Glad I didn’t miss it.

Nikos team did a great job. Picked us up from our hotel in the morning on time and dropped us off at the Gorge’s starting point. Then after the hike - we hopped on the ferry and our driver was waiting for us at the ferry drop off point. Having a private car definitely simplified the hike for us. Didn’t have to wait for any other groups, worry about parking or the long drive, and our car took us right back to our Hotel. Would definitely recommend Nikos’ team for anyone looking to do the Samaria Gorge. Van was comfortable too

The trip was amazing in all respects. The car transfer was comfortable, prompt, and we felt extremely safe. The Gorge is amazing. It’s a long day, but totally worth it for the incredible views. Nikos was immediately visible at the ferry pick up, and he provided so much information for the rest of our trip. Fantastic experience. Our driver arrived on time and was extremely professional and nice. We arrived right as the gorge opened and avoided the buses and crowds. We were picked up after the hike in Sfakia (note: admission to the park and ferry tickets are not included - make sure you book ferry tickets) and promptly returned to our Airbnb.
