Itinerary

Pozzo Della Cava - Complesso Archeologico
Admission included

A fascinating underground journey in the medieval district of Orvieto, through caves full of Etruscan, Medieval and Renaissance archaeological artefacts, unearthed thanks to the hard work of the family who owns it. The well is a huge hole in the tuff excavated by Pope Clement VII between 1527 and 1530 expanding an Etruscan well; closed to the public in 1646 and rediscovered after centuries of neglect. In the nine caves around the well you can see alsto a medieval pottery workshop with numerous majolica artefacts and ceramicists’ tools, some small medieval pits used to dispose of rubbish, an Etruscan cistern, a Medieval winecellar and the remains of some ancient Etruscan burial tombs.

Interesting visit

A well less famous than St. Patrick's Well but worth a visit, also considering the ticket price (€5). Some rooms are well-kept, a visit to be done in about half an hour.

This was very cool to see.

Walking thru here was excellent. It doesn't take too long and IMO if your in Orvieto, this is worth it.

Experience to forget.

Absolutely terrible visit, not due to the interest of the site but to the totally rude, inadequate, arrogant and unacceptable behavior of the manager Marco Sciarra. Person not up to the task of filling the role he claims to perform. I would not recommend such an experience to anyone. As if that were not enough, he distinguished himself by uttering heavy insults when it was pointed out to him that his attitude was not admissible. Lucio

Impolite, rude and vulgar employee Marco Sciarra

The place was very nice, interesting and evocative. Nonetheless I wouldn't suggest a visit in this place, because of the rudeness with which we have been treated by the employee Marco Sciarra. He didn't greet us when we arrived, and when we said we were tour guides he rudely answered that we had to look at the outside exposed pannel to check whether we could take advantage of a reduction or not (not caring enough to tell it to us himself). We decided to buy the tickets anyways and we started the visit. Just at the beginning of the tour he criticized the way we started the visit, like we weren't capable of reading alphabetically ordered pannel. But after the visit (in the souvenir shop), like if it weren't enough, he intruded in a conversation I was holding with my mother about the "bucchero" (which were sold in the shop) and he treated both me and my mother like we were imbeciles (by the way, my mother has a degree in history of art), because I had my doubts about the authenticity of those "buccheri" (they were on a shelf covered in dust, and since they have to be black they didn't look very original). At this point I told him to stop being so impolite, and in return he started talking about our lack of knowledge and that we shoul "read" more books. I defended myself saying he didn't have any right to treat us like that. We walked out and I clearly heard him saying: "quanto gli manca il c***o" witch means something like "this guy wants a c*ck" (which is a homophobic expression). I report this final sentence just to give an idea about the person we had to deal with and how vulgar and unacceptable his behavior was. I say again that the place was very beautiful, but the arrogance of this employee (Marco Sciarra) really managed to ruin the visit, both at the beginning and at the end. Andrea from Rome 11/07/2026

Amazing place, the best experience in the undergrounds of Orvieto.

The Pozzo della Cava was a true surprise. I knew it was beautiful, but I never expected to appreciate it even more than the Pozzo di San Patrizio. Built in 1530 on earlier structures, it is not just a well, but a true archaeological complex in the depths of the city. It consists of three underground levels, the central one characterized by seven communicating rooms from different eras, each with its own function. It is very interesting to understand the origins of Orvieto's ceramic art, with the ancient kilns for firing, the pits for discarding poorly made items, the ancient furnaces, and the third firing chamber, called Muffola, made of concrete and tuff blocks. Even more impressive are the last two rooms, used as tuff quarries, where the blocks for the construction of the above residential structures were extracted. You can see the rough walls and the holes where wedges were inserted to prepare the dimensions of the tuff blocks to be extracted, ultimately leading to the room used as a necropolis. What can I say, a true journey through time and history, which I recommend not to miss when visiting Orvieto.

This is a shorter self...

This is a shorter self guided tour. My husband found it interesting. I didn’t as much. Staff was friendly and they had a nice courtyard at the end. There was food available but it was closed when we visited.

Worth a visit. Unique.

A unique and interesting thing to see, and makes you wonder how they could do this with hand tools. It is very well preserved and offers good picture taking opportunities.

Pozzo Della cava

There was not much to the self guided tour. We thought we were going under the city to see how the aquifers worked, when it is just a small museum area.
