We will meet a the cruise terminal or another preferred accommodation in Trieste and head directly to Postojna. A ride in a comfortable up to date clean and air conditioned private van or a minibus takes about 45 minutes. We accept only up to 20 persons for this excursion.
As we arrive to Postojna your driver will escort you to the cave entrance, give you tickets (included in price) and you will join a group that will be guided in your preferred language by a local cave guide. Our driver and guide, Maurizio, was knowledgeable and fun. He talked with us during the drive the entire way. The caves are spectacular. The cave system is very large and there are so many interesting and unique formations that we took a lot of pictures. However, the experience is a bit commercial - you wait in long lines, then board a train, and then travel very fast into the caves. Our group was huge with maybe 100 people for just one guide in the caves. Her commentary was brief and almost impossible to hear. Nevertheless, the caves themselves were fantastic. We also saw the castle built into another cave system. Lots of stairs but interesting. After lunch at a nice restaurant near the castle, we drove back to Trieste, stopping to see and pet the white Lipizzaner horses on the way.

This trip was fantastic. I knew the cave had to be large since it had a train but the cave is cavernous and miles long. I thought the train would be touristy and kind of a gimmick but it was not. It was necessary transportation to take you deeper into the cave. You get off the train in a large cave section and continue walking after that. We also did the castle and that was really interesting. It is built at the front of one of the cave sections. I’ve never been in a castle built into a cave before. Very enjoyable trip. The tour operator provided us a private driver and Sandra was great. Highly recommend.

This was a great trip and well worth, the adventure. Two things to note are one. The temperature inside the cave is about 50° so bring a jacket this tour does not include admission fee to the castle.

Ernest, our driver, was early to pick us up. Very professional and knowledgeable driver. His English was very good and we enjoyed all the history and stories he told us along the way. He picked us up at the cruise terminal port. It was approx 40 min drive to the caves. We had time for a drink and bathroom break before going in the cave. There is a train that takes you around then there is approx 1 kil of walking some steep inclines (not slippery though). Then the train ride back to the beginning. The caves are impressive and worth doing. Ernest met us right after the cave tour and drove us to the castle. We had the option if we wished to have lunch at the caves or at the castle. I am so glad we chose the castle. We did the castle tour where they give you a portable tour device. You scan when you go into each room of the castle and it tells you a story about the room. After the castle we had lunch at the bottom restaurant (2 only) and what a view of the castle! Lunch was very good. I highly recommend the tour and hopefully if you do the tour you are luck enough to get Ernest as your driver for the day.

The private trip was amazing. Very relaxing and educational. Yuri our driver and guide was very knowledgeable and shared a lot of good information. The cave in the castle are amazing. We have toured many caves throughout the world, but this one was a little different with very high caverns with stiligtights and stiligmights still intact.

Can't recommend this tour company and this experience enough! Peter was accommodating, informative and personable. He arranged for the tickets to the cave so we could avoid the lines and altered our itinerary after listening to our likes/preferences which truly made the day feel custom.
