Not bad depending on what you are looking for

Positives: bus ran as scheduled (and the driver was a pro navigating the tiny highway), got great views of the Almafi coast to and from Sorrento, enjoyed tasting DiCapri limoncello products amidst a breathtaking coastal view of the Bay of Naples, walking tour of Sorrento was interesting and informative, Pompeii is a site worth spending at least half a day visiting. This is your tour is the main objective is to check off boxes on your Campagnia checklist Negatives: The tour guide for what seemed to be half the sites during the bus ride, liked to highlight them only after we passed them from the ideal viewing angle (it was more reliable looking at Google Maps and getting ready to view sites like Naples or Monte Cassino ahead of time) Every additional stop is to an overpriced tourist trap (Bar Liola rest stop in between Rome and Naples, charging 3x prices to other roadside rest stop). The gift shop at the limoncello facility also is guilty of this, but I personally wouldn’t have minded that if they wouldn’t have been coupled with the other overpriced rest stops. I’m sure the tour company gets kickbacks from these places for bringing regular streams of tourists through them. You will likely be bundled with other groups who purchased other levels of guided tours of Pompeii/Sorrento. This increases the likelihood that time at your stops in the end (Pompeii in our case) will be truncated if you have parties on the tour on the slower end. We had a sit-down lunch at a restaurant next to the bus parking lot and ruins and had the standard slow paced Italian service with a 3 course meal (which I wouldn’t mind normally, but this would be better served to do more of an express lunch given it was cutting into time at Pompeii). We weren’t allowed to enter Pompeii until the entire group was ready to enter, including the family busy arguing with the restaurant on the service/bill. What I would do if I went again: pack a picnic lunch/snacks and skip any optional tours not included with the package originally booked. Maximize as much free time at Sorrento and Pompeii (if the weather isn’t unbearable) as possible, which we realize might be best done through taking the train/slow travel, as 2 hours at either site doesn’t do them justice

Pompei and Lemons

My daughter and myself had a wonderful day.. Enricho out guide was helpful and fun with lots of interesting information during the trip and Bruno our driver was excellent as well. We enjoyed a stop in Sorrento for lunch and a visit to the Limoncello factory and our guide through Pompeii excellent as well. Despite loosing some time on the way to Pompeii due to a bad accident on the motorway we still made it back to Rome around 7.30 as scheduled without missing out on anything. All round a great experience 😊

Great day trip from Rome

I went on this day trip with a group of friends and my wife and we had a fantastic time. We enjoyed our guide Alessandro immensely. He was helpful and personable giving us tips and informational history. We also enjoyed Luigi’s expert driving. The pace of the day was busy with a couple hours at each stop.

Pompeii

With guides lovely and provided interesting information both on the bus and at Pompeii. Sorrento lunch not worth the terrible traffic you have to go through. Pompeii was amazing and the guide presented the information with humour and relevance. I could have spent lots more time at Pompeii.

Sorento disappointing and Pompeii without French guide

I booked with guide in French and on arrival it was English only. I was offered a difficult to use French audio guide, we had to constantly search the menu to get information 10 euros wasted. Visit Sorrento without free time as described. The guide chose a restaurant and we had time to eat before leaving. Tasting of limoncello in a shop and not at a producer.

Operator response

Guides were well-experiencedd

A well organized tour. Sasha and Marco were amazing guides. I wish there was more time to eat lunch at Sorrento. The limoncello tasting could be optional. I highly recommend the tour. The trip was good overall.

Operator response

Thanks a bunch for sharing your thoughts! Sasha and Marco send their virtual high-fives for the shoutout—they loved guiding your crew. We hear you loud and clear on the lunch vibes in Sorrento—more time to enjoy those views (and maybe a second helping of pasta) sounds like a plan! 🍝 As for the limoncello tasting, noted—we want everyone to sip on their own terms. Cheers to you for recommending the Independent Sorrento & Pompeii Day Trip from Rome, and we can’t wait to have you back for round two of Italian adventures! 🍋✨ Warm regards, Gray Line I Love Rome

Disorganized and unprofessional

Disorganized and unprofessional. Tour guide talked a lot, but didn’t provide a lot of useful information. She also didn’t seem to understand what the tour was planned for and who was participating in what part of the tour. We were told we would have two hours in Sorrento and then when we arrived we were only given an hour and it was brushed off as that is plenty of time. Pompeii was very hot and three different groups with different tours were told to wait in the heat while they sorted out radios… even for those who didn’t need them. The flow was just off and a lot of time on a very short tour was wasted with the disorganization. If you want to see these locations give yourself more time to- too much to do in one day with the drive time.

Operator response

Dear Becky - thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. Please allow us to clarify that this particular tour is indeed quite ambitious, as it is designed to offer guests staying in Rome the opportunity to visit and get a first introduction to key locations in the South of Italy — such as Sorrento and Pompeii — all within the space of a single day. It’s a demanding schedule, and we understand it may not suit every traveler’s preferences. This tour is primarily intended for those who have limited time but still wish to catch a glimpse of these iconic destinations and gain some insight into their history and culture. For travelers seeking a more in-depth, relaxed, and immersive experience, we also offer multi-day tours specifically dedicated to this fascinating region, which allow for more time and deeper exploration. That said, we truly appreciate your comments as they help us continue improving the organization and flow of our tours. Thank you again for choosing Gray Line I Love Rome. Best regards, Gray Line I Love Rome

Too much time at the rest...

Spent way too much time at the rest stop on the way there and back, but unfortunately not enough time in Sorrento and Pompeii. The whole trip felt extremely rushed. You only get a tiny glimpse of them. Sorrento is such a lovely town, but we only got to spend 50 minutes there. Pompeii is impressive but 2 hours ist not nearly enough time to experience it. Would not recommend the tour to anyone.

Operator response

Susanna, thank for your feedback, it's been noted! We’re glad to hear you found Pompeii impressive, but we understand your sentiment about the time spent there. Pompeii is indeed vast—exploring its entirety would take several days, if not weeks! Our two-hour guided tour is designed to provide an overview of the site, focusing on the most iconic archaeological remains and famous domus, offering a curated glimpse into its fascinating history. We hope this introduction inspired you to return and explore more on your own in the future. If you have any additional feedback or questions, we’d be happy to hear from you. Best wishes, Gray Line Rome

Messy arrangement without proper explanation.

The morning trip was great initially. The guide was early. Bus journey was good. Not much traffic. However, when reached Pompeii. The guide told us he couldn’t get the tickets and we have to queue the normal queue. Paid for the “skip the line” tickets but ends up queuing 3 hours (10am - 1pm)! The tour operator make up by having a free lunch but our trip to Sorrento was cancelled due to the timing delays. However the good thing about the trip is the Pompeii guide. He understand the tour group was feeling unhappy. He inject some humour in the Pompeii guided tour with fantasy explaination. I hoped the tour operate will refund some partial payment. Since we paid in full for full itinerary.

Operator response

Thank you, Jason, for taking the time to share your experience with us. We sincerely apologize for the delays and the inconvenience caused by the unexpected ticket issue in Pompeii. While we strive to provide a seamless experience, we acknowledge that this situation fell short of the standard we aim for. We were aware of the delays that occurred on that day and can confirm that a refund has already been issued to address the changes to the itinerary. Additionally, we hope the complimentary lunch offered was a small gesture to help improve the day despite the challenges. We are pleased to hear that the Pompeii guide’s humor and storytelling brought some light to the situation, and we will pass along your kind words to him. Thank you for your understanding and feedback—it helps us ensure a better experience for all our guests in the future. Best wishes, Gray Line Rome
