Description

The atmospheric Villa of the Mysteries was an elegantly decorated residence with the famous Hall of the Mysteries although it was formerly used to produce wine, while Villa Regina at Boscoreale was an ancient farm with typical dolia (containers for storing wine). The Antiquarium is a display space devoted to the context of productive settlements in the territory and to the history of the Vesuvian area. The recently refurbished layout comprises a room devoted to the discoveries made at the suburban villa of Civita Giuliana, where excavations are still being carried out: the exhibits include the ceremonial chariot with decorative elements, copies of the plaster casts of human victims and a horse, harnesses and several examples of household ware. The time you select on the order form is your preferred time. The closest available time will be confirmed , which can be ANY TIME during opening hours on the selected date, if your preferred time is no longer available.

Poor cats... and little cleanliness

The place is beautiful historically speaking. Too bad we found cans even in protected areas, and a poor feline colony, with fed and sick mul cats. It's a shame to be told that my parents feed tourists. Great civilisation!... I hope those who must take action

Operator response

Condividiamo che i gatti dovrebbero essere trattati meglio, ma su questo non abbiamo alcuna influenza, come lei ben comprende. Lieti che il monumento sia stato di suo gusto.

Beware getting your entry...

Beware getting your entry tickets into Pompeii through Viator. There was no place to redeem the tickets. The website said it would be emailed, but it was not. The helpful information desk did their best to figure out the information in my email correspondence, but they were as befuddled as I was. They managed to get through to a live person on the phone and were told it was in my ap. Neither they nor I could find it. there They finally got the live person to email me the tickets directly. By then we had lost an hour of the two and a half hours we had available to explore the site. MOST DISAPPOINTING!

Operator response

good morning, please check on VIATOR that it is clearly written that there is no meeting point and that the ticket is made available on VIATOR. When you warned us that you had not received the ticket, we sent it back to you directly, replying to the Pompeii staff.

don’t buy from this provider

do not buy from them. My ticket was not accepted by the site and they refused to give me a refund. I showed the workers at Pompeii every email I received, every link, everything I had from this purchase and it wasn’t accepted. The ticket I had did not scan at the gate. After explaining that what I was sold was not accepted at the site a refund was not given. Very disappointed that I wasted over an hour as a young solo traveler talking to many workers who all said what I was sold would not be accepted and to not be given a refund.

Operator response

We are sorry for the inconvenience but, as well explained on the site, access is only possible with our official ticket. No other document allows entry, the ticket was duly sent to your VIATOR account

Italian-style chaotic ticketing experience

One of the best archeological sites in the world and clearly worth visiting. However, the ticketing, queuing, and toilets need modernising. The cafe/restaurant is inadequate considering the visitor numbers.

Ticket Nightmare

Do not, I repeat, do not buy these tickets. The savings are minimal and they are not easily redeemed at the site. There are several entrances and neither staff knew what kind of tickets they were. We walked an extra mile and waited forty minutes while the staff worked diligently to figure out how to use them. Way too much work for everyone involved!

Pompeii is good for one day

I reserved two tickets on line to enter Pompeii. We traveled from Rome via TrenItalia to Napoli. We got to Napoli Centrale and it was difficult finding the Circumvesuviana train to take us to Pompeii. We asked several people until someone guided us to the right direction. When we got to Pompeii I showed my printout then went to this one window to collect the actual tickets. I am sure you could purchase tickets in person as well since you are doing the tour self guided. We got to Pompeii later than I had planned. Luckily our tickets had no specific time to get in and it was a do it yourself tour. Pompeii ruins area is really big. It was a very sunny hot day as well. My husband walked all the way to the end and I stayed close behind but could not make it that far. I recommend to be very careful because the street is covered with big lava cobble stones and they are not only very hot on hot days but also could be very slippery when wet. I saw a lady that had fallen down, was being helped by medical assistance, and she had her right hand all wrapped up. We chose not to rent an audio guide either because it takes a long time to rent the unit then have to stand in line to return it and you had to leave your passport or other important document behind as guarantee to rent the audio unit. This place was really, really busy on the day we visited. It was midweek but still was crowded. I highly recommend to carry a hat and a bottle of water. Inside Pompeii I only saw one shop selling stuff but I did not go in as it looked really crowded. There are little stands with souvenirs, a shop to buy frozen lemonade and other things, after you exit and are done with your tour. There is also a ticket office to purchase tickets to return to Napoli Centrale. You have to go on an underpass to get to the tracks and catch the returning train. A word of advise here: Be extremely careful with your wallet and your purse or backpack when riding the circumvesuviana train. It gets really crowded and jammed packed. The perfect recipe for pick pocketing. Watch out and learn from our bad experience on this train. You know what bad experience I am talking about right? You guessed it! Also, be aware the ride from Napoli to Pompeii takes almost one hour on this train so plan accordingly if you have to catch a train back from Napoli Centrale to Rome. Thank you for reading this post.

Pompeii from an archaeologist's view

I have been to Pompeii several times before and each was a memorable event. With an archaeological guide, it was the best tour I have taken, giving more insights and perspectives with regard to the actual archaeological work that has transpired and is ongoing. I would absolutely recommend having an expert in the field who has done excavation at the sight be your tour guide.

Let down by trip advisor

Booked on trip advisor, money taken from account. Then told 24 hours later that could not supply tickets with no reasonable explanation. Took ages to get money back and although have tried to contact Viator no one seems bothered. Booked direct on online official site with no problem and cheaper.

Cultural excursion worthy

No peak season, so the masses stayed out. Taken, of course. On the site itself, many beautiful things seen. When going out through a gate other than the entrance, the human remains (restored) seen behind glass.

The driving directions are next to...

The driving directions are next to impossible to follow, as was the signage the ruins. We followed Parking signs that got us to an area about 20 minutes away. We went to the first entrance we found and the admission kiosk did not recognize the voucher and sent us to what apparently is the main entrance. Then the signage for advanced admission was not prevalent. When we finally got in and found the information office they said we had to go somewhere else to get the tour. We we through part of the ruins by ourselves and read the the Guide for information.
