Do not miss Saint Chapelle when visiting Paris! It is a small gem with the most spectacular stained glass windows from the 13th century. Anton our guide was very informative about the history of France and the importance of this particular palace and chapel which once housed the most important catholic relics owned by the king.
We learned a lot about the history of Paris and of Sainte Chappel. Our guide was knowledgeable and courteous.
Thank you, Cielle! Sainte-Chapelle really is a gem, and it’s a joy to read that you came away having learned about both the chapel and the history of Paris. We’ll make sure Tancrede sees your kind words, and we hope you’re enjoying Paris!
Wonderful tour. Our guide was knowledgeable and made our tour very interesting. The short walk around the area gave background before entering Sainte Chapell. We highly recommend this tour.
Thank you, Sheila! That walk around the area before stepping inside is exactly the kind of context that makes the chapel itself land differently, and it sounds like Antolin set that up beautifully. We highly appreciate the recommendation!
The headphones were problematic. Wld not stay on ear and cld not hear your guide. Disappointed and ruined tour..
Thank you for sharing this. Guides are always genuinely disappointed to learn through a review after the tour that something got in the way of a guest's experience, rather than be told during the tour so they can fix it straight away and ensure that you have the best possible visit. With a group of just 7, this tour is designed to be intimate, close enough that you don't really need the headset at all, and guides always carry spares in case one needs swapping out. If anything ever feels off, your guide is right there and always happy to help, please don't hesitate to ask them, even repeatedly. We all care very much about the guest experience and we are all there - guides on the spot and us supporting them in real time from the office during the tours - to make sure everything goes well for all our guests. We hope you had a lovely time in Paris.
Matt did a great job explaining what we saw. Walking around Notre Dame before hand was a surprise bonus.
Thank you, Mark! Glad that little detour past Notre Dame felt like such a nice surprise, the two buildings share such a close history on the Île de la Cité. We're glad Mathieu explained it all so well. We'll be sure he sees this and we hope you enjoyed Paris!
Almost everyone who travels to Paris wants to see and tour Notre Dame, and they definitely should, especially now that it has been restored because of the fire. But many miss the world’s most amazing collection of original stained glass that is only a few hundred yards away on the west end of the Île de la Citè: Sainte Chapelle. King Louis IX lived in the palace on the west end of the island and he was very religious, so much so that he is the only king of France to ever be named a saint! Even though he was so religious, he was also a very wealthy king and he decided to build his own private chapel at his castle. He poured so much money into it that it took less than 10 years to complete this amazing chapel. The panels of stained glass tell the story of Old Testament books, the passion of Christ, and one panel depicts the history of the chapel’s most precious relic: the Crown of Thorns worn by Jesus. (Now housed at Notre Dame). The panel even depicts King (St) Louis receiving the crown from monks and then delivering the crown from the river, down the street to the chapel dressed as a barefoot penitent man. Our guide, Avi, had an encyclopedic amount of knowledge about King Louis IX life and the Chapel and did a wonderful job guiding us through all of it. As far as tour guide go he is a 10/10. We highly recommend this tour to everyone.
Thank you so much for such a beautifully detailed review, Robert. You've put into words something we feel every time we walk into Sainte-Chapelle ourselves, and we've been there more times than we could count, it genuinely never stops taking your breath away, that first moment the light hits the glass. So many visitors head straight for Notre Dame and never realize this is just a few hundred metres away, which is honestly one of the reasons we love this tour so much - it's a chance to show people something extraordinary and really make a difference to a visit, rather than leave you to work out the stories on your own. That's exactly where Avi's knowledge makes such a difference, turning stained glass panels into an actual story, rather than beautiful windows with no context behind them. A 10/10 from someone who clearly did their own homework on the chapel's history means a great deal. We'll be sure Avi sees just how much this meant to you, and thank you again for taking the time to write something so thoughtful, it's exactly the kind of review that helps other travelers realize this is a place they shouldn't miss.
Guide provided lots of information about Ste Chappelle and the prison next to it. Stain glass is amazing on bright day.
Thank you, David! There's so much packed into that spot, Sainte-Chapelle itself and the history of the Conciergerie right beside it, and it's wonderful that both came through so clearly. You're so right about the light too, the stained glass truly transforms on a bright day, one of the many things that makes each visit feel a little different. We'll be sure this feedback reaches the team!
Anthony was our guide and was amazing! SO enthusiastic & knowledgeable…..truly had a passion for Saint Chapelle & guiding tours!
Thank you, Kim! Sainte-Chapelle has a way of drawing that kind of passion out of anyone who spends real time with it, those windows alone hold centuries of stories, and Anthony clearly brings all of that to life. We'll be sure to pass this along to him!
Anthony was wonderful! Very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. Clearly he loves his job and the venue. Go.
Thank you, Kathy! We're so glad Anthony's genuine love for the venue and its history came through so clearly. That kind of enthusiasm is contagious, and we completely agree when it comes to the Sainte Chapelle. It's a spectacular and gorgeous site that should not be missed. We'll be sure to pass this along to Anthony!
