The Palazzo Massimo is also called Palazzo Massimo alle Terme due to its close proximity to the Baths of Diocletain. The villa is a superb Neo-Renaissance style palace, originally used as a Jesuit college before being transformed into part of the National Roman Museum. This is my favourite museum in Rome The Roman artefacts in this museum's collection are exquisite. There were very few people in the museum which meant you could study everything in peace and quiet. Very easy to get to as it's right by Termini station
Tomas was an excellent guide. He was knowledgeable and passionate about the museum and the baths and was considerate and able and anxious to answer any and all questions we had. He was also fun! Top notch!
Our guide is a working archaeologist so he was able to give us the backstory on many artifacts - where, when and how they were discovered.
What a beautiful place! It was laid out so beautifully with clear descriptions in Italian and English. Time to stop and look at everything with seats carefully placed to simply sit and enjoy the wonderful art. All staff were delightful. It was truly a joyous experience. We were lucky to arrive on Republick day and the first Sunday of the month and therefore free but I would happily have paid for this experience twice over.
