This was an extreme difficult hike unless you take the horse up which they highly promote. I ended up having to take the horse halfway which was filling the group up anyway, and I got charged $25 from the halfway point… so if you think you can’t make it up just take the horse from the beginning. If you’re hiking up, get hiking sticks.
The pickup at my hotel was as planned. From Antigua, it was about an hour and a half drive. When we got there the walk up, was another 1 1/4 hours. Finally at the summit, the view was incredible. Seeing the summit, and the lava fields below was a sight to behold. We then trekked to the lava fields and had marshmallows over the steam still coming out of the hot rock. So cool! The journey down was much easier. The park rating the hiking difficulty as medium. I would say a medium ++. Very strenuous on the way up, but an experience I'll never forget. If you know yourself, and think you can do, go for it. You'll never forget being in the clouds on a volcano!!
