We had such an amazing morning with Atok, our excellent and knowledgeable tour guide, and with Iwan who guided us by jeep, to see Mount Merapi. We would highly recommend this day time tour as you can get close to the mountain and take some exceptional photos and also visit the museum and shelter nearby to really learn about volcano and the eruption in 2010. We had terrific views from a number of angles and took many great photos. We also saw (and heard) the lava steam flowing out from the volcano! Would recommend an early pick up (we did 7am) to reduce the risk of clouds blocking the view. A special thanks to Atok who is a very experienced guide and talked to us about life and travel in Indonesia. We had such a nice time talking with him and he gave us so many local tips! And to Iwan, who understands the area and the impact of the eruption and explained it all to us in detail. Fantastic!!

Superb jeep experience at the foot of Mount Merapi: an unforgettable moment with a very pleasant ride and historical moment (museum and bunker)! Our drivers were really top-notch with numerous explanations and photo taking. A must-do if you are passing through the region 🤠
This review was written by my son who was part of our group… Our driver Kin picked us up from our Marriott Yogyakarta Hotel at 1:00pm and drove us to where the jeeps were. This was about an hour drive. There we switched to our jeep driver and guide, Jhon, who was very friendly and spoke good English. Our first stop was the volcano viewpoint, which also included the Kaliadem bunker built into the hillside there. Seeing Merapi itself is completely weather-dependent, and unfortunately our day was very cloudy so we never got a clear view of the peak. The bunker itself was still worth walking through, though — a bit eerie knowing what it was built to shelter against. From there we headed to the “Alien Rock” photo stop, further down near one of the valleys where lava flowed during the 2010 eruption. Honestly, this was the weakest part of the tour. It’s a kitschy setup with a fake Viking ship and various sculptures you can climb on for photos, and it felt more like a tourist trap than anything tied to the volcano. The one redeeming part was the valley view itself, which was genuinely striking once you thought about what transpired there. Our last stop was the House of Memory, a small museum built from the remains of a home destroyed in the 2010 eruption. This was easily the most powerful part of the day — burned household items and photos from the disaster are still on display, and it really drives home the scale of what the area went through. There’s also a man with owls nearby you can pet, which has nothing to do with the volcano but was a fun little surprise. During the ride back to our hotel, our driver Kin took us on a little detour through a local village pointing out local plants and fruit along the way, which was a nice touch. He was very friendly, knowledgeable and took good care of us. He even had his own coffee and chocolate making/tasting class as an experience that I honestly wish I had the time to try. Also worth knowing is that there’s a paid add-on for off-roading through shallow river crossings and rougher terrain — we skipped it, but it looked genuinely fun and might be worth it if you want more out of the jeep experience. Bottom line: This tour is a good way to see the Merapi area, but how much you enjoy it depends a lot on the weather and whether you spring to enhance your experience with the off-road add-on. The alien rock stop could use some work, but the bunker and museum made the trip worthwhile.
Pick up was on time and friendly. Good value for money tour. Our guide was super helpful and told us lots about the history of the volcano
Excellent experience I would recommend it to everyone
The trip was amazing and very well organized . Fery was very friendly and professional
Very fun day trip from Yogyakarta to see the Volcano in the morning (not sunrise). My guide Fery was amazing - very knowledgeable about the volcano and the history of Indonesia. He introduced me to “Bhinneka Tunggal Ika“, the national motto of Indonesia - sort of like E pluribus unum”.
Very helpful driver/tour guide. Our driver Fery Made our experience much better. He is punctual, picking you up on time, collets the ticket beforehand and guide you throughout the whole tour
This was an awesome tour! As well as being loads of fun, I came away with heaps of knowlege about the mountain, its eruptive history, food plants & the local communities. Both my driver to the mountain (Kin) & the Jeep driver were considerate & safe drivers. The views were fantastic & right on cue, I got to watch an eruptive flow. Thanks guys!
