This is one of the most surprising Industrial Tourism experiences that can be carried out in Portugal.
The visit begins at the meeting point with a brief explanation of the geography, geology and history of the sector at the Núcleo Documental do Mármore.
The program includes a visit to a quarry to learn about the marble extraction processes, followed by a visit to a sawmill where the marble is transformed for subsequent application.
The visits take place in Alentejo, municipalities of Vila Viçosa and Borba, 50 minutes from Évora and 2 hours from Lisbon.
During the visit, visitors are provided with a helmet and a vest for mandatory use during the visit and which will be returned at the end.

Visit to the Nucleus of Marble Stones of the region with passage and presentation of various stones, with emphasis on the processes of extraction of marble, existing dangers, used machinery, economic and artistic aspects. For the transportation between the meeting point and the stones, visitors need their own vehicle.
Visit to a cottage workshop where the artisanal and manual transformation of marble, the techniques, the dangers, the machinery used the final work and the personal stories of the cottage master are highlighted.
Visit to a marble milling / marble processing industrial workshop where the mechanized industrial processing of marble, the different machines used, the existing hazards, the different examples of final products and the entire operational context of a milling will be presented.

Fun and super informative!
This can be one of the best marble 101 lessons ever! Thanks to João’s professional, enthusiastic, and fun storytelling and knowledge sharing, we were able to take a peak at the marble world and learn a lot compared to knowing nothing at the start. The tour is eye opening and absolutely one of the highlights during our time in Portugal;)

Excellent tour of marble region near Estremoz
We had a very informative insight into marble. We started in a classroom type of location to learn how marble exists in the region and the different types of marble found in the area. We were then taken to 3 open mines to see how the marble is extracted. As it was Saturday afternoon there were no workers so it was not dusty or noisy. The scale of the mines were incredible. Our guide Joao treated us to a local song which resonated in the mine. He is an excellent singer. He then drove us to the processing plant where the marble slabs were cut into more manageable pieces and ranked for sale.

Marble quarries facing downwards
Very interesting experience, we saw a different extraction method than that of the Italian quarries.
But what is worth a lot is the friendliness and passion of our guide Joao. Highly recommended.

Don’t skip the marble tour!
This is a fascinating and fun tour that I highly recommend. Joao was an excellent guide - perfect blend of knowledgeable and engaging - and he even thought to reach out to us a week ahead to ask us if we wanted to reschedule our tour to another day or time so it would be cooler out. We really appreciated that! We saw the marble quarry and a fabrication plant. Definitely bring water and wear light colors - lots of marble dust but easily it cleans off!

A Marble Experience
Joaquina gave us a wonderful tour. She was both thorough and cautious as we navigated around the quarry and in the marble workshop. She’s correct in saying, “After this tour, we will never look at marble the same!” Her explanations were enlightening about different marbles, colors, quality and locations including how marble is formed. Well worth a detour
We had a fantastically interesting trip to the Marble quarries near Vila Visosa. Who knew that Portuguese marble is world renowned. The process of mining is extraordinary and you get view the moonscape of a working quarry. Our guide Joao was great, he had expert knowledge and clearly loves his home place. He keep us engaged the whole time. I is well worth a visit
