Really great! Followed them on social media for several weeks before the tour, but I didn’t think the videos did the tour justice. Overall, well done.
Everything was great. The host was really entertaining
Based on their Instagram account I expected something different than we experienced - I thought we would have an Amsterdam native show us around and tell us more about the lived experience and personal side of life in Amsterdam and the Netherlands. Instead, we got a young man from Germany who had lived in the city for 2 years. He walked us through standard tour information of names, dates, and historical facts and figures. It was a decent city tour but it did not feel unique, personal and as though a native was showing us their home town.
Hi there! Alexandra here, thank you for taking the time to share your experience. I’m sorry the tour wasn’t what you had expected after following us on Instagram. I do want to clarify one thing, as there seems to have been a misunderstanding: we don’t promise that our Hello Amsterdam guides are born and raised in Amsterdam. Our team actually reflects Amsterdam itself — some of us were born and raised here, while others have lived here for many years and made Amsterdam their home. We really value both perspectives. Someone who grew up here brings memories and experiences that someone who moved here simply can’t have. And someone who chose Amsterdam as their home often brings another perspective: they remember what it was like to discover the culture from the outside, what surprised them, and what visitors often struggle to understand. Both can tell you something different about this city. We also sometimes have guests who discover us through Instagram and would specifically like to tour with one of the people they’ve seen there. They’re always very welcome to ask. If that guide is available, we’ll try to make it work or let them know which dates they’re guiding. I’m sorry this wasn’t clear to you when you booked and that you arrived expecting something different. I was particularly sorry — and honestly a little surprised — to read that the tour didn’t feel personal to you. Robbie gets consistently wonderful feedback, very often specifically about his warmth, storytelling and the personal way he brings Amsterdam to life. Of course, that doesn’t change the experience you had, and what feels personal to one person may not feel the same to another. Hello Amsterdam is our two-hour introduction to the city, so yes, history, names and dates are part of it. But they should never be the whole story. Our aim is to connect that history to the Amsterdam of today and make the city feel human, relevant and easier to understand. I’m sorry that we didn’t hit that mark for you. And because we genuinely stand behind the quality of our tours, we have a money-back guarantee if you’re not happy with your experience. Unfortunately, I can’t identify your booking from your TripAdvisor username, so I can’t refund you directly from here. Please get in touch with us and let us know which booking was yours, and we’ll happily refund you. If the tour wasn’t worth it to you, we don’t expect you to pay for it. That’s exactly why the guarantee is there. Thank you again for sharing your feedback.
