Guadalajara Private Walking Tour

Description
My name is Diego. I hold a bachelor's degree in tourism and a master's degree in social studies from the University of Guadalajara. I created this experience to introduce travelers to Guadalajara, the city where I was born and raised. More than a regular tour, I'd like to provide you with a thoughtful progression through the city, with an emphasis on history, architecture and socio-political movements. In a fun and slow-paced 3-hour walk you'll see 10+ of Guadalajara's fundamental landmarks, including: the Cathedral, the city square and the main plazas and government buildings, templo Expiatorio, Mercado Libertad (the largest indoor market in Latin America), Colonia Americana, Hospicio Cabañas, Degollado Theater, and more! This is a fully-private experience, meaning your guide will give you exclusive attention and we'll go at your own pace, so a personalized high-quality experience is guaranteed.

Itinerary
Step back in time to Colonia Americana, Guadalajara's first modern district built in the early 1900s by wealthy Mexican, European, and American industrialists. Admire the beautifully preserved eclectic and regionalist architecture lining the leafy streets. This neighborhood has transformed into the city's hippest hangout, brimming with young energy. Here, you'll find a vibrant scene of art galleries, restaurants, and stylish coffee shops and bars.
This magnificent neo-Gothic Catholic church offers a glimpse into the city's rich history, including its religious conflicts shaped by the cultural and economic influence of the US in Mexico. I'll delve into these fascinating details during our tour.
This remarkable modernist park, designed by Luis Barragán, Mexico’s most renowned architect, was recently renovated ahead of the 2026 World Cup. Today, it serves as both a popular gathering place for locals and one of the city’s most important transportation hubs, connecting multiple bus and subway routes.
This former Carmelite convent, built in the 1700s and now transformed into a public plaza, offers a unique perspective on Mexico’s complex process of separating church and state, which began in 1857. Your local guide will bring this pivotal chapter of the country’s history to life.
Step into the grandeur of the 16th-century Renaissance Cathedral, a breathtaking testament to the region's rich history. Uncover its captivating secrets as we delve into its fascinating past. Then, wander through the surrounding plazas, where you'll admire a remarkable blend of Renaissance, Baroque, Neoclassical, Art Nouveau, and Art Deco architecture.
We'll explore the 19th-century neoclassical Degollado Theater, along with its surrounding plazas and churches. While I can't guarantee access to the theater's interior due to scheduling, the exterior and surrounding area offer a fascinating glimpse into the city's artistic history.
No tour of Guadalajara is complete without a visit to Founders Plaza. This landmark isn't just a pretty square, it's a window into the fascinating story of Spanish colonization in Western Mexico. We'll uncover the origins of Guadalajara's name and delve into how Mexican society views this complex legacy today.
Get ready to be amazed by Mercado Libertad, the largest indoor market in Latin America, also known as San Juan de Dios. Immerse yourself in a vibrant shopping experience, marveling at the colorful displays of souvenirs, handicrafts, and local delicacies. Interact with friendly vendors and experience the authentic atmosphere of this iconic market.
Immerse yourself in history and art at Guadalajara 's stunning Hospicio Cabañas! (Closed on Mondays). Explore this UNESCO World Heritage Site and admire an astonishing set of 57 murals by Jose Clemente Orozco, one of the three greatest muralists of Mexico. Unravel the stories behind the architectural marvel and delve into the powerful murals. This UNESCO site has strict regulations regarding external guides, but feel free to explore the museum at your own pace. I will provide insights to enhance your understanding of the museum and Orozco's art.

Our guide, Diego, was very knowledgeable about the history and culture of Guadalajara. We learned a lot and it was a good introduction to the city on the first day of our vacation. His English is excellent and he was very comfortable to walk with.
Thank you so much Brian! Your review means the world to me. Enjoy the rest of your time in GDL, and let me know if you need anything else while in the city.
What a wonderful tour! My family and I enjoyed exploring Guadalajara with Diego. He’s a fantastic tour guide with a clear love for his hometown. He did a great job sharing its history and culture in a way that was engaging for my husband and I as well as our teenage sons. We upgraded to include sampling street food and highly recommend that as well.
Thank you so much Heather for your kind words! It was a real pleasure showing your family around. I'm so glad you all enjoyed the history, culture, and the food. Enjoy your time in Cancun, and I hope to welcome you back to GDL someday!
This was the perfect introduction to the complex city that is Guadalajara. Diego spoke perfect English, and was very knowledgeable about the local architecture, history, political influence, and a host of other topics! Often as a Westerner guided tours end up feeling like a set-up where the guide takes you to this vendor and that vendor, completely losing focus on the sites. Diego did none of that, he showed me places and opportunities but there was never a hint of pressure. That casual vibe earned him a great tip! This tour is well worth the price - I could not recommend it more!
Muchas gracias Kim! Your words mean the world to me. If you're ever back in GDL please let me know, there is a lot more to explore. All the best to you and your brother.
Diego was great! He has a great wealth of knowledge in history and of the significant places in Guadalajara.
Gracias Jose! Enjoy the rest of your stay in GDL!
We only had a couple of days in Guadalajara and wanted to get to know the city. The tour was the perfect amount of introductory information to the city. I liked that it was early during the day to avoid the worst of the heat. Diego went at a casual pace and stopped when we needed and let us know places to use the bathroom along the way, which we ended up needing. I really liked the architectural history of the city and the explanation of the neighborhoods. It was such a pleasant walk, it didn’t feel like four hours. Along the way, Diego took some very nice pictures of us. We ended the tour at the market, where we found the jerseys we had been looking for! Looking back, I wished I would have asked more about the mariachi history, but there was a lot of information given regardless. Even after the tour, Diego was helpful when I had a question on where to try to find some spots to try tequila. I definitely recommend this tour if you’ve never been to Guadalajara.
Muchas grqcias Sandra! por tomarte el tiempo de escribir un review tan detallado. Si alguna vez estás de vuelta en GDL no dudes en contactarme. Un abrazo a ti a Tim!
A very interesting and pleasurable walking tour with Diego who showed us the architecture pearls of the city and other sights and places worth feasting our eyes on while telling us the stories that let us understand more about ages of the city history. A very professional, caring and friendly guaidance- thank you Diego!
Gracias amigo! Fue un placer! Que disfrutes el resto del mundial en MX!
Diego was an amazing tour guide! It's clear he loves his city and really knows it. It felt like we really got to experience Guadalajara, beyond the touristy areas. He gave us time to ask plenty of questions and let us stop at the stores we were interested in seeing. I thought the pacing was great too. Fortunately, we don't have mobility issues, but Diego still checked in with us to make sure we were comfortable. The food was AMAZING (we'll never be able to have birria again back home because it just can't compare), and we learned so much. He also went above and beyond to send us plenty of recommendations after the tour. A tour with Diego is a must if you're visiting Guadalajara!!
Thank so much Lydia! It means the world to me! I hope you and Tony have a great time in Mexico.
Diego was wonderful - incredibly knowledgeable about history, architecture and current events. We had coffee, ate delicious local food I would not have found on my own, saw churches & libraries & parks - an amazing mix of modern and historical from a local guide who has lived all over the world and can represent this city with all the uniqueness it has to offer. Highly recommend
Gracias Tricia! Safe travels home!
We had a great time. Diego was excited, engaged, and just an all around pro. We were bringing my mother to the region her father had come from for her first time and she was absolutely blown away. She had asked me to book us a walking tour of Guadalajara and I’m just so happy we came across Diego and his tour.
Thanks so much, Matt! I really enjoyed meeting you and your family and sharing a bit of my hometown with you. Hope to see you all again soon!
Such an amazing tour and incredible way to explore the city! I loved that we started early with tacos breakfast at the iconic market San Juan de Dios surrounded by stunning tabachín trees. The market barely started to come to life and the crowd hadn't arrived yet. We then went on a long walking tour across the city learning a lot about History, people, culture, architecture. It was fantastic!
Muchas gracias! Fue un placer conocerlos! Hope you had a smooth journey home.
