The Hanging ChurchBegin your exploration of Coptic Cairo at the Hanging Church (Al-Muallaqa), one of the district’s most distinctive landmarks. Built above the remains of the Roman-era Babylon Fortress, the church is known for its beautiful wooden ceiling, historic icons, and richly decorated interior. Your guide will explain the church’s place within Egypt’s Coptic Christian heritage and the stories connected with this ancient part of Old Cairo.
Synagogue Ben EzraContinue to the Ben Ezra Synagogue, a historic Jewish landmark tucked into the heart of Old Cairo. The site offers an important perspective on the Jewish community that once formed part of Cairo’s diverse religious landscape. Your guide will share the history surrounding the synagogue and explain its significance within Coptic Cairo, where Christian, Jewish, Muslim, and Roman heritage can be found within a relatively compact area.
Church of St. Sergius and BacchusVisit the Church of St. Sergius and Bacchus (Abu Serga), one of the oldest churches in Cairo. The church is traditionally associated with the Holy Family’s journey through Egypt, and beneath its main structure is a crypt connected with that tradition. As you explore the church, your guide will point out its early architectural features and explain why Abu Serga remains an important destination for Christian pilgrims and visitors interested in Egypt’s religious history.
Mosque of Amr Ibn Al-AsYour Coptic Cairo route also includes the Mosque of Amr Ibn Al-As, traditionally regarded as the first mosque established in Egypt and the earliest mosque in Africa. The mosque has been rebuilt and altered many times throughout its long history, but its importance to Cairo’s Islamic heritage remains unmistakable. Your guide will explain its role in the development of early Islamic Cairo and how the surrounding district grew into one of the city’s historic centers.
Mosque and Madrasa of Sultan HassanMove into Islamic Cairo to visit the imposing Mosque-Madrasa of Sultan Hassan, a masterpiece of Mamluk architecture. Its enormous entrance, towering walls, vast courtyard, and carefully designed chambers reveal the ambition of the 14th-century complex. Rather than simply viewing the building from outside, your guide will help you understand how it functioned as both a mosque and an educational institution, and why it remains one of the defining monuments of historic Cairo.
Al Rifai MosqueStanding directly beside Sultan Hassan, Al-Rifai Mosque creates one of Cairo’s most striking architectural contrasts. Although the mosque was completed centuries after its Mamluk neighbor, its grand interior and elaborate decoration were designed to complement the surrounding historic landscape. The building also serves as a royal mausoleum, making the visit an opportunity to learn about Egypt’s more recent royal history as well as its Islamic architectural traditions.
Citadel of SaladinContinue to the Citadel of Saladin, the great medieval fortress that once served as a strategic center of Cairo’s defense and government. Perched above the city, the Citadel offers a dramatic change of scenery from the dense streets below. Your guide will introduce you to its military history and explain how the fortress remained an important seat of power for centuries while giving you time to take in the broad views across Cairo.
Mosque of Muhammad AliInside the Citadel, visit the famous Mosque of Muhammad Ali, often called the Alabaster Mosque because of the extensive alabaster used in its decoration. Its enormous central dome, surrounding half-domes, elegant minarets, and spacious prayer hall make it one of Cairo’s most recognizable mosques. From the Citadel grounds, you can also appreciate sweeping views across the city, providing a memorable final perspective on the layers of Cairo you’ve explored throughout the day.
